Clemens Declines Plea Agreement, Lecavalier Undergoes Knee Surgery, V-Jax & Rice Updates, Harvins’ Migraines, Wagner Confirms 2011 Retirement, A-Rod to DL

MLB

– Former RHP Roger Clemens was offered a plea agreement, however it was declined, said his attorney Rusty Hardin. “The government made a recommendation [for a plea agreement] and we declined. I will tell you the recommendation they made was a very good one if he was guilty. And if he was guilty we would have jumped on it. Everybody has all this great solicitous advice, all the media and you guys — ESPN. Nobody is answering the question: What if he didn’t do it, what should he have done? And everybody wants him to confess.” The Rocket is telling the truth or has absolutely lost it. He is facing the prospect of real jail time right now. Stay tuned.

– Braves’ LHP Billy Wagner told David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Saturday that he has committed to retiring after this season. Wagner has a $6.5M option for 2011 and has been stellar in the ninth inning for Atlanta this season, but he’s done. “Me and my family have made plans for retirement. I don’t need it anymore. I’m tired of the expectations, tired of the criticism, tired of people who never played trying to tell me how to play.”

– Sources tell FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal that the Giants were the team awarded a claim on Marlins’ OF Cody Ross. The Giants already have Burrell, Rowand and Guillen as righty outfielders and switch-hitter Andres Torres plays against a lot of southpaws, so it’s unclear how he’ll fit. They may have just wanted to block him from going to another team. The Marlins, though, could just hand him over and save themselves about $1M.

– The Yankees have placed 3B Alex Rodriguez (right calf) on the 15-day DL. It makes complete sense for the Yankees to give A-Rod as much rest as possible right now, as he’s been playing hurt for a while and they need him fully healthy for late September and October. He sports a .265/.333/.485 line with 21 homers and 97 RBI.

– A’s 1B Conor Jackson (sports hernia) may require season-ending surgery. Jackson has felt discomfort in his lower abdomen and groin since March. He even saw three or four doctors in regards to the pain dating back to his time with the Diamondbacks, but it wasn’t diagnosed by A’s doctors until Friday. “It’s definitely a mental blow. It’s borderline embarrassing, just because I come over to a new organization and I’ve only played [18] games. I know that they had high regards for me coming over here and I felt like health has ridden my performance. It’s just frustrating, that’s not even the word I’m looking for.”

– The Red Sox have placed 2B Dustin Pedroia (soreness in left foot) on the 15-day DL retroactive to August 19. Doctors have told Pedroia that he’s done no further damage to the foot he broke in June. However, it’s just not feeling good enough for him to play on at the moment.

– Marlins’ RHP Ricky Nolasco (knee) is likely to be scratched from his scheduled Sunday. The Marlins are examining Nolasco at the moment to see if he has a torn meniscus. The righty is 14-8 with a 1.23 WHIP and 147 strikeouts in 155 2/3 innings this season and was just about to begin negotiations toward a contract extension.

– The Yankees have placed 1B Lance Berkman (sprained right ankle) on the 15-day DL retroactive to August 16.

– The Red Sox have placed C Jarrod Saltalamacchia (infection in lower right leg) on the 15-day DL retroactive to August 16.

– The Padres have placed OF Tony Gwynn Jr. (fractured hamate bone in right hand) on the 15-day DL.

– The Astros have placed RHP Matt Lindstrom (back) on the 15-day DL retroactive to August 17.

– The Marlins have placed C Ronny Paulino on the restricted list and LHP Sean West (inflammation in right knee) on the 15-day DL retroactive to August 15.

– The Astros have placed 2B Jeff Keppinger (fractured left big toe) on the 15-day DL retroactive to August 17.

– The Dodgers have placed RHP Vicente Padilla (bulging disc in neck) on the 15-day DL retroactive to August 16.

– The Cardinals have transferred C Jason LaRue to the 60-day DL.

NFL

– The Chargers have placed unsigned RFAs WR Vincent Jackson and LT Marcus McNeill on the roster exempt list. The players currently withholding were sent letters informing them of the Chargers’ plans to invoke a 3-game suspension, applicable upon signing their tenders. That brings Jackson’s total to 6 games under suspension if he does sign. The Seahawks have recently spoken with Jackson’s agent, but demands to surpass WR Brandon Marshall’s 4-years/$46.5M have caused a stalemate. San Diego’s asking price of a 2nd-round pick is not believed to be an issue.

J-Vax’ suspension can be served concurrently with his 3-game NFL suspension as long as he signs by September 4. If Jackson doesn’t sign by September 4, the extra 3 games would begin to kick in at that point. He could end up serving anywhere from 3-to-6 weeks. There’s enough incentive here for Jackson and any teams interested in trading for him to iron out an agreement by early September. He’s reportedly asking for  a5 -year/$50M contract with $30M guaranteed.

– After testing his hip Friday, Vikings WR Sidney Rice said that his status for the season opener is now “up in the air.” Rice felt pain in his hip Friday when he pushed it to the limit in conditioning drills. The Vikings, unsure of Rice’s early-season status, are working out free agents WR Brandon Jones and WR Javon Walker.

– The NFL has suspended Bills TE Shawn Nelson 4 games for violating the league’s Substance Abuse Policy. As recently as early August, the Bills were said to have “big plans” for Nelson. Nelson should be starting again by the end of the season.

– Vikings’ WR Percy Harvin (migraines) was back on the sidelines Friday, watching practice and hanging out with the coaches. It’s good sign that Harvin is out of the hospital and back functioning normally. He appears to have no after-effects from Thursday’s migraine episode. There’s no current timetable for his return to practice.

Harvin is also scheduled to see a specialist about his migraines this weekend. Coach Brad Childress is “optimistic” that Harvin may practice next week, but the Vikings will take all necessary precautions. “This is a puzzle we have no idea when it will be solved. It’s a tough deal,” Chilly said. It’s bad that Harvin’s migraine episodes are occurring closer together, but the injury is tricky to gauge. He should still be ready for Opening Day.

– Patriots’ OL Nick Kaczur (bulging disc in back) has reportedly undergone surgery and is likely to miss the entire 2010 season. He went down on the second day of training camp and never returned to practice.

– Chargers’ OT William “Tra” Thomas has decided to retire rather than play out the 2010 season. The 12-year vet entered camp as the favourite to fill in for Marcus McNeill at left tackle, but he quickly fell down the ladder after developing knee problems.

– The Falcons have placed rookie WR Kerry Meier (knee) on the IR, ending his season. Meier went down in Atlanta’s second preseason game. The Kansas quarterback was having a big camp as a slot receiver, so the Falcons wouldn’t have ended his year if his injury was insignificant. Meier likely tore ligaments in the knee.

– Former Phoenix Cardinal Pro Bowl return man Johnny Bailey passed away Thursday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Bailey is the only 3-time winner of the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is awarded to the best player in Division II College Football. He had a6 -year career with the Bears, Cardinals, and Rams.

NHL

– Lightning’ F Vincent Lecavalier (left knee) will undergo minor arthroscopic surgery and is expected to miss 4 weeks. He should be ready for training camp on September 17.

– The Penguins have signed F Arron Asham to a one-year/$700K deal. The gritty winger spent the last two years with the Flyers, recording 24 points and 126 penalty minutes in 2009-10. Asham will be used on the Pens’ checking line.

– Brendan Shanahan is helping the NHL’s Research, Development, and Orientation camp take a “proactive approach” to new rules in the NHL. The league is set to test several modifications to the rules currently in place. Shanny has helped devise ways to improver the game of hockey. While the motions are in place to begin testing, the changes will not come for some time. Some of the rules being questioned are no-touch icing, wider blue lines, and relocated faceoff dots.

NBA

– The Nuggets are expected to have a frank discussion with F Carmelo Anthony about his future once they hire a new GM, which should happen next week. Former Suns executive David Griffin is still the favourite, but whoever lands the GM job will have a lot on their plate. Stay tuned.

– Contrary to rumours, the Magic and Hornets have no interest in signing G Allen Iverson, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein. Stein apparently spoke with a team sources who shot down the rumour. AI’s career may be over.

– G Delonte West has been suspended for 10 games due to last year’s arrest on weapons charges. It’s worth noting that if he signs with a team in January, his suspension would start at that time.

WWE

– Legendary wrestling manager General Skandor Akbar (James Wehbna), 75, best known for his work in World Class Championship Wrestling and Mid South/UWF, was found dead yesterday at his home in Texas. He remained active on the independent scene until his death and had just recently made an appearance at the NWA Legends Convention, which Jim Ross talked about in a recent blog. Ross even noted that Akbar greatly influenced a young Steve Austin during his time in Dallas.

Also, “Nightmare” Ted Allen, 54, a staple of the southeast wrestling scene for nearly 35 years, was found dead in his home earlier this week. The cause of death is believed to have been a massive heart attack. Allen is best known for having trained the likes of Arn Anderson, Scotty Riggs and the late Ray Traylor (Big Bossman).

TNA

– Rosie Lottalove, who was removed yesterday from the official TNA Wrestling website’s roster page along with six others, confirmed her departure from the organization this morning on her Twitter account.

“Ok guys. TNA days are done for now. Not a bad thing, so don’t speculate. Thank you 2 the guys and girls, & agents. It was a blast!”

A student of the Team 3D Academy, she worked a tryout match on April 20, during which she accidentally injured her opponent, Daffney. She received a contract a few weeks later. The portly performer was used once more on television following her June 3 debut on Impact, in a match against Taylor Wilde on the July 9 episode of Xplosion.

Bruins Lose Sturm for Remainder of Playoffs, Tons of MLB Injury Updates, Bynum Needs Surgery?, George Karl Blood Clot

NHL

– Bruins’ F Marco Sturm (torn ACL and MCL in right knee) will miss the remainder of the playoffs. It is unclear if he will require surgery at this time. Sturm tore his ACL and the meniscus in his left knee on December 18 against Toronto last season.

MLB

– Mariners’ LHP Erik Bedard (shoulder) is slated to throw a simulated game soon after throwing a successful bullpen session on Friday. He felt good on Saturday after a 55-pitch bullpen session, which is a good sign for his recovery. Manager Don Wakamatsu believed that after one more bullpen session he would be ready to throw the simulated game. The M’s are still hopeful that he’ll be able to rejoin the rotation by the end of the month, which would give them an even more potent rotation than they already have.

– Dodgers’ OF Manny Ramirez (calf) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Class-A Inland Empire on Tuesday. He’s eligible to be activated from the DL on Saturday and it’s anticipated that he will play only two or three games with Inland Empire. Ramirez elected to rehab with Inland Empire instead of Triple-A Albuquerque because of the proximity to Los Angeles. He’s been out since late April with a right calf strain.

– Phillies’ SS Jimmy Rollins (right calf) is still feeling tightness and doesn’t think he will be able to return within the next two weeks. He’s hoping that he can return to the team by no later than the end of May. Rollins has began baseball activities, so it’s all up to how his calf responds to treatment. Stay tuned.

– Dodgers’ RHP Vicente Padilla (forearm) is not expected to return from the DL anytime soon, according to Dodgers manager Joe Torre. “He is feeling better, but I don’t see him helping us this month…just from the fact that when he is ready to pitch, I don’t want to say he is starting all over again, but he will have a lot of work to do to get back on a mound at this level.” Padilla has a 7.06 ERA in four starts.

– The Yankees have placed OF Curtis Granderson (strained left groin) on the 15-day DL.

– The Twins have placed RHP Pat Neshek (middle finger inflammation) on the 15-day DL retroactive to April 29.

– The Royals have acquired SS Reynaldo Navarro from the Diamondbacks for RHP Carlos Rosa. Navarro is a raw infield prospect that hasn’t appeared in a game above Single-A. The 20-year-old was batting .241/.307/.329 with a homer and two steals this year in 89 plate appearances at Single-A Visalia. Rosa, 25, will report directly to Triple-A Reno. He’s a former top prospect and could find his groove with a change of scenery, as many others have. The righty had a 3.65 ERA and 10/7 K/BB ratio through 12 1/3 innings this season at the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate in Omaha, Nebraska.

NBA

– Lakers’ F Andrew Bynum (right meniscus tear) may require minor surgery, but intends on playing through it for now. Bynum said he felt “sharp pain” during the first quarter on Sunday, but that it went away. Stay tuned.

– Nuggets’ coach George Karl has another blood clot in his right leg as he recovers from radiation and chemotherapy treatment for throat and neck cancer. The 58-year-old coach was rushed to the hospital Friday afternoon with the clot. She said doctors were trying to determine the cause because Karl already is on blood-thinning medication. Doctors reinserted a filter into his abdomen. The filter had been removed two weeks ago. The filter prevents the clots from traveling to his hart or lungs. It initially was inserted in March when Karl was first treated for blood clots. Karl said his right big toe was hurting Friday and that it felt swollen, and an ultrasound was scheduled.

NFL

– Steelers’ WR Limas Sweed (Achilles tendon) left the minicamp practice field Sunday with a potentially major Achilles’ tendon injury. A tear of the Achilles’ would likely knock Sweed out for the entire 2010 season. Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed the severity. Sweed, the No. 53 overall pick in 2008, has just seven career catches in 20 games.

Batista Quitting WWE This Week!?, HHH Taking Time Off, Goldberg Contract Stalled, Christian on WWE Poster, Lemaire Retires, Vanek Returns

WWE

– According to FWOnline, Multi-time champion Batista is reportedly finishing up with WWE this week. While is not definite that tonight’s match at Extreme Rules will be his last with the company, but he is considered leaving any day now. His contract is expiring and he yet to sign a new deal. At this point, company officials have no plans for him this summer. Batista has made noise about leaving dating back to January.

– Former WWE and WCW Champion Bill Goldberg got some buzz last month when he announced that he is negotiating with WWE about a merchandise deal and would be open to wrestling one more match at next year’s WrestleMania 27. In an interview with MonstersandCritics.com regarding his recent elimination from the “Celebrity Apprentice” television show. Goldberg revealed that his negotiations with WWE have not been as productive as everybody hoped.

“Well that’s if we can come to a contractual agreement. But what they’ve put forth right now is something that I will not accept. So is it something that I’m striving for? Absolutely not. Is it something that I would like to happen because I’ve got a little boy and it would wonderful for him to walk in the toy store and to be able to pick up a, you know, his – excuse me, like he says, a baby-daddy figure, you know, that would be awesome. But that is not going to cloud my business judgment by any stretch of the imagination.”

He added that demand is still high for Goldberg merchandise, but he’s not going to sign anything unless he’s satisfied with the deal.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been involved in the business. And I know there are a number of manufacturers out there that would love to get their hands on Goldberg products. And I’m not like anybody else; I’m going to stand my ground and a deal will be done if it’s to my liking and to my liking only.

– Triple H leaving on a stretcher tonight is believed to be his exit from the WWE storylines for a little while. Triple H is expected to take time off to heal some injuries and film a new WWE movie, Killing Karma.

– The hooded man that interfered in the Mysterio/Punk match at Extreme Rules was indeed Joey Mercury.

– On June 20, WWE will present the first ever Fatal Fourway PPV event  from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. Commercials have already begun airing in the New York area for the event. From what we can tell, the top title matches will be 4-way elimination matches. The first PPV poster for the event has been released and it features Captain Charisma, Christian. Check it out:

NHL

– Devils’ coach Jacques Lemaire has announced his retirement from hockey. His Devils team was eliminated in the first round for the third consecutive year. The 64-year-old Lemaire says he doesn’t have the energy to coach anymore. He will stay with the Devils in a role yet to be determined. Lemaire returned to the Devils last season for a second stint as coach. He led the team to the Stanley Cup in 1995. He also held coaching jobs with the Montreal Canadiens and Minnesota Wild and was a recipient of the Jack Adams Award in 1994 and 2003. He also served as an assistant with Canada’s gold medal-winning entry at the Vancouver Olympics in February.

– Sabres’ F Thomas Vanek (ankle) will return to the Sabres lineup on Monday. Vanek missed the Sabres’ last three games due to the injury. Although coach Lindy Ruff said “all indications point to him playing,” he cautioned that Vanek’s playing time may be limited depending on his health and how the game goes. “This is the type of game that if one team is down, if you’re down halfway through the game, coaches will tend to go to three lines to lay it all on the line anyways. I would predict unless you’re tied and you’re still rolling four lines, somebody is going to put some extra ice time on their key players to try and win a hockey game.”

– Blackhawks’ F Marian Hossa avoided a suspension for his hit on Nashville’s Dan Hamhuis. Hossa hit Hamhuis from behind as the two were chasing the puck toward the end boards. This was Hossa’s first offence, so his history may have helped him out here. In all fairness, it didn’t look like much of a push, as he was still fairly far away and only got one hand on Hamhuis.

MLB

– Giants’ INF Freddy Sanchez (shoulder) is playing in extended spring training games and could be activated by mid-May. Sanchez is working his way back from late-December shoulder surgery. San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said Sanchez could return to the team in two weeks. “It looks like he’s on his way now,” Bochy said. “He’s playing defense, swinging the bat … he’s doing everything. I’d put it right around two weeks.” Juan Uribe is hitting well in his absence, but the Giants would certainly welcome Sanchez back with open arms.

– The Rockies have placed OF Brad Hawpe (left quad) on the 15-day DL. Hawpe was pulled early in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader and missed the second altogether.

– The Dodgers have placed RHP Vicente Padilla (right forearm soreness) on the 15-day DL.

– The Angels have placed C Bobby Wilson (concussion, strained left ankle) on the 15-day DL.

– The Pirates have placed RHP Chris Jakubaukas (head contusion, concussion) on the 15-day DL.

NFL

– Raiders’ QB JaMarcus Russell has ballooned to 300 pounds, according to the National Football Post. Russell was already overweight at 290, so he’s going in the wrong direction. It’s still likely that he’ll be released soon. The “move JaMarcus to right tackle” jokes are coming fast and furious now.

– As reported earlier, Seahawks’ RB Julius Jones was indeed on the trade block during the draft, and it’s believed that he’s still available. The Seahawks won’t get anything for him, and he’ll probably end being released. Seattle acquired RB Leon Washington and RB LenDale White on draft day, and will bring back third-down specialist RB Justin Forsett. White looks to be the favourite for carries in this backfield.

– In addition to DTs Ryan Sims and Chris Hovan, the Bucs are currently trying to move WR Michael Clayton. Clayton, a former 1st-round pick, became one of the worst re-signings in league history when GM Mark Dominik gave him a five-year/$24M contract last year. He went on to catch 16 passes in 11 starts. Clayton has scored three TDs in the past five seasons. He’ll probably end up being released.

– The Patriots have released OLB Adalius Thomas. The Patriots were unhappy with his play on the field before Thomas became a surprise disruption off of it. Thomas, 33, will attract significant interest on the open market.

Jeff Hardy Back to WWE?, Phillies Re-Sign Duo, Tigers to Extend Verlander, Tomlinson Retirement, Cowboys Extending Austin, The Rock Update, Awesome Kong Quits TNA

MLB

– The Phillies have re-signed OF Shane Victorino to a three-year/$22M extension. An official announcement could come as soon as Friday. Victorino, 29, batted .292/.358/.445 with 10 home runs, 62 RBI and 25 stolen bases last season while earning just $3.125M. The new deal would cover his last two arbitration-eligible seasons and his first year of free agency.

The Phillies also re-signed RHP Joe Blanton to a three-year/$24M extension. He will earn $7M in 2010, $8.5M in 2011 and $8.5M in 2012, buying out his final year of arbitration and his first two years of free agency. Blanton, who turned 29 last month, has proved himself as a durable middle-of-the-rotation type, logging at least 194 1/3 innings in each of the last five seasons. He was 12-8 with a 4.05 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with the Phillies last season, averaging a career-high 7.15 K/9.

– Tigers RHP Justin Verlander expects long-term contract talks to begin soon after his salary for 2010 is settled. Verlander filed for $9.5M and the Tigers countered with $6.9M when arbitration figures were exchanged on Tuesday. Finding a middle ground could take a few weeks, though discussions may eventually lead to a long-term agreement. Verlander said, “I think Dave [Dombrowski's] quote is that they want me around for a long time. I want to be here for a long time. I know I love it here, and I know I’d like to be here for a long time.”

– The Dodgers have re-signed RHP Vicente Padilla to a one-year/$5.025M contract. He’ll get $1M of that in a signing bonus and can earn another million with incentives based on innings pitched. Padilla, 32, has a 4.33 ERA over 11 big league seasons and hasn’t managed an ERA lower than 4.00 since 2003 with the Phillies, but he should be a decent No. 4 starter with this pretty reasonable commitment. The 32-year-old right-hander was 4-0 with a 3.20 ERA in eight games (seven starts) with the Dodgers down the stretch last season.

– Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera revealed on Thursday that he has spent three months undergoing alcohol abuse treatment with a doctor in Miami. “When you’ve got problems, you can’t hide.” Cabrera, who turns 27 in April, hasn’t had a drink since counselling began last fall. Everything went completely off course during the season’s final weekend, as he was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife following an alcohol-fueled night in Chicago. He batted 324/.396/.547 with 34 homers and 103 RBI last season, garnering one first-place MVP vote.

– Tom Hicks’ sale of the Rangers could be announced as early as Friday, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Hicks Sports Group is working on an agreement with a 12-man investment team headed by Pittsburgh sports attorney Chuck Greenberg. It sounds like most of the necessary paperwork has been sorted through and only a few minor issues remain. The purchase must be approved by baseball’s executive and ownership committees, and 75% of team owners, but that process should run smoothly.

NFL

– According to beat writer Kevin Acee, it’s a “foregone conclusion” that RB LaDainian Tomlinson won’t be back with the Chargers in 2010. Acee points out that there won’t be a renegotiation on the $5M LT2 is due because “they did that last year to avoid one this year.” Tomlinson’s standoff with GM A.J. Smith was ugly at times last year, so maybe the final parting goes more smoothly. Don’t expect Tomlinson to earn a starting job once he hits the open market.

– Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated Thursday that he’s eager to sign RFA WR Miles Austin to a long-term deal. Jerry’s son, executive VP Stephen Jones, wasn’t ready to talk about a long-term extension for Austin after his NFL record 421 yards in his first two starts. Austin’s dominant performance in the second half of the season erased all doubts, however. His agent can start with WR Roy Williams’ ludicrous five-year/$45M deal and go from there.

– Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips’ extension runs through 2011, not 2012 as previously speculated. Phillips was to receive a 2012 option year as well, but it was scratched at the last minute. Essentially, owner Jerry Jones picked up the 2010 option and added one more year. Jones said, “I’m encouraged by the progress that we made this year, but in no way are we satisfied. This contract represents that. Two years in the NFL is an eternity, but it has to be urgent.”

NFL

– Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson spoke to Sports Illustrated this week to promote his new “Tooth Fairy” movie. To read the full interview, visit SI.com.

During the interview, the former WWE superstar stated once again that he wants to return to WWE to host WWE RAW and was actually supposed to host the show earlier this month:

“I do plan on going back and hosting. I was actually gonna go back this month, but the day I was going to host, I had to go to Mexico for promotion of the movie, so we had to cancel that,” Johnson said.

Johnson says his return to WWE, rumoured to take place this summer, will be more than just a typical one-night guest hosting gig:

“I’ve remained close with Vince McMahon over the years, but here’s the key. It’s not just to go back and host. I don’t want to do that. I want to go back and host and do something special. I want to entertain the fans in ways they haven’t been entertained in years.”

Johnson appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman on CBS this week and spoke a lot about WWE and his time in pro wrestling. Johnson described the rush he gets from a live WWE crowd like nothing else in entertainment and said he’ll always be “The Rock.”

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross commented about Rock’s Letterman appearance in his latest blog:

“Loved it on Letterman when Dwayne said that he would always be “The Rock” which was not only true but had to make wrestling fans around the Globe feel good. I don’t ever see the Rock wrestling again but I know that he will host Raw sometime in the future to reconnect with his fans and to promote his latest project.”

– WWE Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre reportedly suffered a dislocated patella during his match at Tuesday’s SmackDown taping. While there is no official word on the injury, the IC Champ does appear to be injured, but the severity is not known at this time.

NBA

– Cavaliers G Mo Williams (left shoulder sprain) will miss the next four-to-six weeks after an MRI showed a left shoulder sprain. Williams was averaging 16.9 points, 5.1 assists and 35.5 minutes per game, leaving a gaping hole in the Cavs’ lineup. Mo won’t need surgery.

TNA

– According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there are conflicting reports asn to Jeff Hardy’s status with TNA Wrestling. Hardy made his return to TNA back on the live January 4 iMPACT! show, but has not been featured prominently on television in recent weeks. Sources within TNA are saying that Hardy has signed a contract, while friends of Hardy have said he’s told them he’s working without a deal.

The fact Hardy hasn’t appeared with TNA since January 4 could indicate that he hasn’t signed or committed to any dates. In related Jeff Hardy news, he was said to be upset at the recent segments on WWE’s SmackDown where CM Punk used his name in promos to get himself over when Hardy was Hardy is not even in WWE anymore to defend himself.

Despite Hardy’s legal problems and his appearances for TNA, WWE still wants him back down the road.

– TNA Knockout Awesome Kong, who got into a physical altercation with TNA backstage announcer Bubba the Love Sponge at Monday’s iMPACT! tapings, has given notice that she’s leaving the company. The news was originally reported by FWOnline, and was confirmed by Kong herself on Thursday afternoon via a live video stream on Qik.com. Kong’s departure from the company appears to be effective immediately, and she said during the video cast that she informed TNA she won’t be attending the upcoming UK tour. It should be noted that many TNA wrestlers and knockouts who have told management they are leaving have been persuaded into staying, but at this point Awesome Kong’s relationship with TNA appears to be off.

– Apparently in response to online reports concerning his status with TNA Wrestling, Ken Anderson posted the following statement on his Twitter account this afternoon:

“I guess that those 6 copies of paperwork that my manager, agent, lawyer, and TNA officials toiled over for a month & I signed & overnighted weren’t contracts. I thought they were, I thought I had signed for a one year deal, but then again, what the hell do I know…?”

The statement has since been deleted.

Dodgers Close to Deal with Kemp, Tons of MLB Rumours, T-Mac to Sixers?, Seau Retires, Sid Vicious to TNA

MLB

– The LA Times reports that the Dodgers are nearing a two-year deal with OF Matt Kemp. Kemp won both a Silver Slugger and Gold Glove awards after batting .297 with 26 home runs and 101 runs batted in. The 25-year-old will likely be signed by early next week. The Dodgers are also looking to sign RHP Joel Piniero, with re-signing RHP Vicente Padilla as a backup plan.

– FOXSports reports that LHP Doug Davis is being pursued by the Mets, Brewers, Twins and Nationals.

– Mets OF Carlos Beltran (knee) will miss the next 12 weeks and will miss the start of Spring Training. Beltran underwent microfracture knee surgery on Wednesday.

Carlos Beltran’s agent Scott Boras told the AP that his client was within his rights to undergo surgery on his right knee without the Mets’ approval. According to Boras, the language in the Beltran’s contract requires advance written permission only for elective operations. “This was necessary surgery, necessary surgery to work,” Boras said. The Mets may have a claim that this was elective. Oddly, Beltran did actually receive consent from team physician Dr. David Altcheck on the surgery, but according to a source, Altcheck was not authorized to give consent because he is not a team official. Either way, the Mets are expected to hold a conference call on Thursday to discuss the situation.

– According to ESPN, there are between six and 10 teams interested in RHP Ben Sheets. He’s reportedly asking for $10-12M. Sheets missed the entirety of 2009 with a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow. The 31-year-old had a deal in place with the Rangers before the injury scuttled things, and it figures that Texas would still be keeping tabs on the right-hander. Earlier reports had the Cubs heavily interested.

– The Tigers have re-signed RHP Joel Zumaya to a one-year/$915K deal.

– Expanded instant replay is on the agenda for the first meeting of MLB’s newly formed committee of managers and longtime executives on Thursday. The 14-man committee also will discuss expanding the first round of the playoffs to best of seven and ways to eliminate lengthy breaks during the postseason.

NBA

– PhillyBlurbs.com reports that the Rockets have offered F Tracy McGrady to the Sixers for F Andre Iguodala and F Samuel Dalembert. This is probably the stupidest trade rumour I’ve ever heard, no way in hell does this happen. The Rockets have until February 19 to trade T-Mac and his $23M expiring contract. The Rockets have also contacted the Bulls about F Joakim Noah and the Wizards for F Caron Butler.

– The Grizzlies are set to extend GM Chris Wallace this offseason. Coach Lionel Hollins is likely to receive an extension as well.

NFL

– Patriots LB Junior Seau announced on Inside the NFL that his playing days are over. “I’m going to go surf. It’s all over with the speeches. Whatever happens, I can say, honestly say…that’s going to be my last game,” Seau said of the Patriots’ Wild Card Round loss to Baltimore. Seau has said he would retire before, but at age 41 this is likely for real. The 12-time Pro Bowler will be eligible to enter the Hall of Fame in 2014 as a probable first-ballot entrant.

TNA

– TNA returnee Scott Hall is pushing company officials to hire his friend, Sid Eudy (a/k/a Sid Vicious). The two apparently became real close friends in the past year as just before his return to the organization, Hall had been working on the independent circuit with the multi-time world champion. Furthermore, Sid’s son Gunnar made his wrestling debut alongside Hall this past summer in a tag match. There were also videos posted online of the duo “shooting” on the wrestling business. It’s interesting to note that the TNA logo was recently posted on Sid’s MySpace page.

NHL

– Oilers G Nikolai Khabibulin (back) will undergo surgery on Thursday. The procedure will repair a herniated disc in his back that has kept him sidelined since November 16. Khabibulin will be out indefinitely after appearing in just 18 games this season. Edmonton may take a run at available goaltenders in the NHL, as they are said to be interested in Canadiens’ G Jaroslav Halak or they could try to acquire the Islanders’ G Martin Biron. For now though the Oilers will ride out Jeff Deslauriers and Devan Dubnyk.

WWE

– Jim Ross has posted his latest blog entry at JRsBarBQ.com. Some highlights:

Cornette Blasting WWE & TNA Recently: Jim Cornette is in the news a great deal here lately with his “stinging” comments about the wrestling biz in general. I’ve known JC for over 25 years and over that length of time I’ve discovered that most folks either really like Corney or they really dislike him. He is outspoken and controversial which are two of the traits that made him one of the greatest, wrestling managers to ever live. Plus he likes to create controversy as it creates traffic for his website, JimCornette.com. I have not always agreed 100% with some of Jim’s assessments but I have never doubted for one second his passion and love of the business. Ring of Honor is fortunate to have Cornette on their team.

Wrestling at 60: Wrestlers over 60 who I can recall still being good at that age obviously include Jerry Lawler and Ric Flair but let’s not forget that Lou Thesz was still a solid hand when he was north of 60. I don’t recommend every wrestler performing when they reach the age of 60, obviously, but a few guys have been able to pull it off on occasion especially “Naitch” and the King. Several men have returned to the ring in their 60′s for “one off” appearances, more often than not in tag bouts, and many times these “returns” drew good money. It was the 2nd and 3rd “return from retirement” that usually didn’t work so well.

His Favorite Announce Teams: “I loved [Gorilla] Monsoon and [Bobby] Heenan. I could watch and listen to them for hours. Mean Gene Okerlund and “The Brain” were also great together on All American Wrestling back in the day. Funny, funny stuff that was largely ad libbed. I thought Tony Schiavone was really good before Atlanta’s WCW sucked the passion out of Tony who had a distinctive voice and a tireless work ethic when we were together in Charlotte and Atlanta. I also felt that Mark Madden could have been a superb analyst if he had been provided a the right opportunity as he was intelligent, very witty and caustic all in a good way. Lance Russell and Dave Brown had the best chemistry of any duo I think ever saw. The Memphis based duo were excellent in their tenure for many, many years.”

Roy Halladay Trade Update, Marlins Locking Up Johnson?, HBK Retiring at WrestleMania 26?, Jim Ross Update, Clinton Portis Retiring?, Blazers Lose Fernandez

VoV

-– You can keep up with VoV through Twitter by clicking here.

MLB

– Jon Heyman of SI.com hears that the Red Sox will not give up RHP Clay Buchholz or 1B Casey Kelly for Jays ace RHP Roy Halladay. Heyman notes a potential “market crash” and he’s potentially right. It’s difficult to dismiss the Yankees as a potential suitor for Halladay, but GM Brian Cashman may be more inclined to keep top prospects now that they’ve dealt RHP Ian Kennedy and OF Austin Jackson. There’s certainly no reason for the Red Sox to deal Buchholz or Kelly if the Yankees won’t participate in the bidding. Stay tuned.

– According to MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro, the Marlins are expected to re-open long-term contract negotiations with RHP Josh Johnson at some point. Johnson, 25, went 15-5 in 2009 with a 3.23 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He’s under team control through 2011 so the Marlins don’t have to budge just yet, but they clearly want him to be a part of their organization for a long time to come. The stud right-hander turns 26 in January.

– According to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports, the Cubs and Mariners are discussing a swap of OF Milton Bradley for RHP Carlos Silva. Silva, 30, posted an 8.60 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 30 innings this past season and a 6.46 ERA in 153 1/3 innings the year before. Quite a feat if the M’s can do it.

– Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News reports that the White Sox have emerged as a “serious contender” for free agent DH Hideki Matsui. The Angels have also confirmed their interest. The White Sox covet a left-handed bat, so Matsui certainly fits the bill. According to Feinsand, Chicago only has $5-6M budgeted for the spot, but Matsui might not have many offers to choose from. After the trade for OF Curtis Granderson, the Yankees could choose to cut bait on Matsui, OF Johnny Damon, or both.

– Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Tuesday that he believes the Cardinals “have a legitimate shot” at re-signing OF Matt Holliday. Holliday is drawing interest from all of baseball’s biggest spenders this offseason, but he seemed to enjoy his time in St. Lou and would probably be comfortable with a return. After all, the 29-year-old hit .353/.419/.604 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI once he joined the Birds.

– Ken Rosenthal reports that RHP John Smoltz may still end up back in St. Louis. The FOXSports.com reporter says that the Cardinals are not sold on a fifth starter, and may look to Smoltz to fill that role. And if Jaime Garcia claims the role, the team could simply shift Smoltz to the bullpen. Seven other teams, five in the NL, have shown interest in the future Hall of Famer.

– The Nationals are expected to discuss a long-term contract extension this season with LHP John Lannan. Lannan, who doesn’t turn 26 until next September, clearly established himself as the Nationals’ ace this past season, finishing with a 9-13 record, 3.88 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 89 strikeouts in 33 starts (206 1/3 innings). He should be a major part of Washington’s rebuilding efforts.

– The Cardinals have officially signed RHP Brad Penny to a one-year/$7.5M contract. Penny, 31, can earn close to $9M through performance-based incentives on the one-year contract. He posted a 4-1 record and 2.59 ERA in 2009 after returning to the NL and should only bolster a St. Louis rotation that already boasts RHP Chris Carpenter and RHP Adam Wainwright.

– According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa acknowledged Tuesday that his club has interest in free agent SS Miguel Tejada. Speaking with a group of reporters, La Russa said he’s hoping the Cardinals will find a No. 4 or No. 5 hitter on the market this winter.

“I still think we have a better chance to have legitimate guys (who are already on the team) to hit in front of (Pujols). We could use the guy to hit behind him.”

Miguel Tejada, though climbing up in age, certainly comes close to fitting that bill. He batted .313/.340/.455 with 14 home runs and 86 RBI in 2009 and could slide into the Cardinals’ opening at third base.

– The Giants are interested in 2B Orlando Hudson, major league sources told Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com. If the Giants signed O-Dog, the team would move 2B Freddy Sanchez to third base. While it wouldn’t address the Giant’s lack of power, it would still upgrade their offense – and defense too, with Pablo Sandoval shifting to first-base. The team has a lot of different directions it can go in. Another suitor for Hudson that has popped up in recent days are the Rockies.

– Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that LHP Randy Wolf’s agent Arn Tellem is shopping the Brewers’ three-year contract offer around, while the Mets appear to be out of the running now. According to Haudricourt, the Brewers offered Wolf a three-year/$27M deal. If true, the offer would be pretty hard to top, but that hasn’t stopped Tellem from talking to the Mets and even the Yankees, albeit briefly. Wolf, 33, was 11-7 with a 3.23 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 160 strikeouts in 2009. His value was enhanced after the Dodgers failed to offer him arbitration last week.

– Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports the Red Sox are unlikely to have interest in trading for Braves RHP Rafael Soriano. GM Frank Wren said reliever Rafael Soriano has granted clearance to be traded. Soriano accepted the Braves’ offer of arbitration on Monday, but after giving permission, he can now be dealt to any team. The Red Sox liked him as a free agent, but don’t want to give up prospects and certainly aren’t attracted to his $8M arbitration-influenced price tag. The right-hander posted a 2.97 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP and a 102/27 K/BB ratio in 75 2/3 innings this year and recently accepted salary arbitration from Atlanta. The Yankees, Astros and Orioles may still have interest.

– According to Tracy Ringolsby of FOXSports.com, the Rockies are interested in signing 3B Melvin Mora as a backup infielder. Mora had his $8M option for 2010 declined by the Orioles in October and was denied an offer of arbitration in November. The 37-year-old hit .260/.321/.358 this season with just 28 extra-base hits in 484 plate appearances, but the Rox obviously feel he will come cheap.

– Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports that while the Dodgers have talked to the agents for free-agent pitchers LHP Randy Wolf, RHP Vicente Padilla and RHP Joel Pineiro, they will not talk about multi-year contracts. According to Gurnick, the Dodgers believe that one-year bargains will be available late in the offseason, similar to the one they handed out to Randy Wolf in February. While the Dodgers were fortunate with Wolf, they could be left at the alter this time.

– Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports that Phillies RHP Joe Blanton could be traded. Once source told Zolecki that Blanton “is on the market,” while adding that the Phillies would like to acquire “a big bullpen piece.” They’re more likely to find a bullpen piece in free agency, but the Phillies will listen to offers on the 28-year-old during a weak market for starting pitchers. Blanton was 12-8 with a 4.05 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP in ’09.

– MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy reports the Brewers are close to re-signing RHP Claudio Vargas and will have him serve as a reliever. Vargas posted an impressive 1.74 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 30/15 K/BB ratio in 40-plus innings this past season. A new deal is in place, according to McCalvy, and is just awaiting approval from Vargas and his agent.

– Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the market for free agent RHP Jose Valverde is “very limited.” Valverde denied himself a chance to earn up to $10M Monday evening when he declined the Astros’ offer of salary arbitration. Now he’s drawing little interest because the teams who need a closer the most aren’t willing to break the bank. The 31-year-old posted a 2.33 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 25 saves in 29 opportunities for Houston this past season.

– Free agent UTIL Robb Quinlan has drawn interest recently from the Twins, among other teams, reports MLB.com’s Lyle Spencer. The Rockies are scheduled to meet with Quinlan’s representatives at this week’s Winter Meetings. It’s quite surprising that he’s drawing so much interest. The 32-year-old hit just .243/.275/.339 with two homers and 14 RBI in 2009 while playing shoddy defense at a variety of positions.

WWE

– WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Some highlights:

HBK Retiring at WrestleMania: “We get emails all the time with fans assuming that WM26 will be HBK’s last Wrestlemania. I have not heard that confirmed whatsoever and if it is true wouldn’t one think that WWE would be preparing to make it a HUGE deal? In my mind’s eye, Wrestlemania season officially launches at the Royal Rumble. I am excited about the March 2010 release of the next HBK DVD which is a countdown of Shawn’s Best Matches. Good luck in narrowing that list down to a three disc set.”

Ross on his own health: “It’s back to the doctor’s today for me as I will be seeing a Rheumatologist today which is a first. I had to go on line to find out what a Rheumatologist does in their world of specialty medicine. However, I’m feeling better every day and remain upbeat and optimistic that I have not called my last match and that my next one might be sooner than some expect.”

Mark Cuban: “Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban likely got cheered in the only major arena in America as the controversial, young billionaire is essentially one of the most vilified individuals in pro sports. Cuban is defiant, has been fined by NBA Commissioner David Stern many times and basically has been caught on TV court side acting like a tool. Nonetheless Cuban did a solid job on Raw and one could tell that the Mavs owner keeps up with the product or was tremendously prep.”

NFL

– Redskins RB Clinton Portis (concussion) has been placed on the IR and is done for the season. Portis will make a complete recovery for 2010, but he, however, was less optimistic.

“If it’s my time, I think I had a great career. The doctor feared that if I took another hit like that, [the vision problems] would get worse … He said it rattled the vision and that was his main concern.”

Portis believes he can get back to normal with rehab, but his future is cloudy at this point.

NBA

– Blazers G Rudy Fernandez (back) will undergo a microdisectomy Tuesday to relieve pressure from a nerve root in his lower back that is causing pain in his right leg. He is expected out four-to-six weeks.

NHL

– Flyers G Ray Emery (abdominal tear) has been placed on the IR and is expected out four-to-six weeks.

Dodgers to Acquire Halladay?, Lincecum Wins Cy Young, Angels Shoot Down Holliday, Bay Rejects Red Sox Offer, Allen Iverson Update, Jim Ross Return at WM26?

VoV

-– You can keep up with VoV through Twitter by clicking here.

MLB

– The Dodgers have focused on acquiring Jays RHP Roy Halladay, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Dodgers lacked an ace all year long, but their need became abundantly clear when they had to turn to RHP Vicente Padilla in an elimination game against the Phillies. Nightengale writes that the Dodgers would have to give up RHP Chad Billingsley and others to acquire Halladay, which would be a mighty impressive haul if new GM Alex Anthopoulos is able to pull it off.

– Giants ace RHP Tim Lincecum has won the NL Cy Young Award on Thursday for the second consecutive season. He repeats for the first time since LHP Randy Johnson did from 1999-2002. “The Freak” went 15-7 with a 2.48 ERA, led the NL with 261 strikeouts, and tied for the league lead with four complete games and two shutouts. Lincecum barely edged out Cardinals RHP Chris Carpenter, who earned nine first-place votes and teammate RHP Adam Wainwright, who actually had 12 first-place votes. Lincecum is just the second pitcher to win the award without the most first place votes – LHP Tom Glavine was the other in 1998. There’s an argument to be made that Lincecum was actually better this season than he was in 2008, posting a lower ERA (2.48 compared to 2.62), a lower WHIP (1.05 compared to 1.17) and a lower batting average against (.206 compared to .221).

– Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that OF Jason Bay rejected a four-year contract offer from the Red Sox. Boston’s offer was believed to be around $60M. “It’s not a surprise that a player that’s gone this far wants to see what’s out there,” said general manager Theo Epstein. Bay, 31, will hit the free agent market for the first time in his career on Friday. He is one of the top three free agents available and will take his chances of earning more on the open market.

– Angels owner Arte Moreno has ruled out signing OF Matt Holliday, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com. Moreno reportedly made the declaration at the annual owners’ meetings on Thursday. While Holliday’s asking price may be too high, Moreno would consider signing OF Jason Bay if the club is unable to retain RHP John Lackey, 3B Chone Figgins and OF Vladimir Guerrero. Moreno acknowledged that the club can’t likely to afford to keep all three.

– Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports that trade talks for Marlins 2B Dan Uggla got “pretty hot and heavy” at the GM meetings, with the Giants and Rangers being mentioned as potential landing spots. Uggla has been linked to the G-Men for some time now, but the Rangers’ interest is new. According to the report, if the Marlins don’t get what they want in exchange for the 29-year-old Uggla, they are open to dealing one of their other arbitration-eligible players – a group that includes 1B Jorge Cantu, OF Cody Ross, SS Alfredo Amezaga and RHP Ricky Nolasco. Still, Uggla is the most likely among them to be dealt.

– The Rays have become the “clear-cut favorite” to acquire OF Milton Bradley from the Cubs, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. The two parties have been linked for a while, with OF Pat Burrell-for-Bradley as the rumoured swap. Bradley is owed $21M over the next two seasons while Burrell will make $9M in 2010. The difference in contracts has reportedly been the biggest stumbling block on a deal.

– According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, a developing three-way deal is being discussed involving Mariners RHP Brandon Morrow  and Tigers LHP Edwin Jackson. It’s hard to know what to make of this until the third team and player is revealed, however the Tigers are reportedly listening to offers for the 26-year-old Jackson. Morrow, 25, bounced back and forth between the bullpen, the starting rotation and Triple-A Tacoma in 2009, but his potential is unquestioned.

– The Cubs have re-signed LHP John Grabow to a two-year deal.

WWE

– WWE announcer Jerry Lawler tells the UK Sun that even if Jim Ross is healthy and able to return to work in the coming months, WWE will probably hold off on bringing him back to the announcer’s table until WrestleMania 26 next year.

“There’s a strong possibility that WrestleMania could be when he makes a return. Even if it’s a situation where he could return a little bit before that, it might be best to just wait and let him come back at Mania – as the comeback of JR would be a big draw.”

Lawler repeated what JR said in a recent blog, that it will two or three months to become “facially ready” for TV again. Lawler says Ross’s voice sounds fine over the phone and someone on the other end wouldn’t know he’s only able to talk out of one side of his mouth.

“I texted him last night, and spoke with him this past week, and he’s doing better but says it will probably be a few months before he’s facially ready to be back on television. But when you talk to him, when you just hear his voice, you can’t tell. He doesn’t have slurred speech any more.”

– The November 16 edition of Raw drew a 3.5 cable rating, way up from last week’s disappointing 3.1. The good news continues for WWE, as they’ve snapped the troubling trend of the show losing viewers in the second hour. The hourly numbers for this week’s show were 3.37 for the first hour and 3.56 for the second.

NHL

– The Hurricanes have placed F Eric Staal (UBI) on the IR and G Cam Ward (leg) on the long-term IR. Staal is out a minimum of 10 days, while Ward will sit out 24 days or 10 games. The team is targeting Ward’s possible return for December 5 against Vancouver.

– Senators F Alexei Kovalev (funeral) will miss several games. Kovalev is attending the funeral of his mother-in-law in Russia.

NBA

– News that signing G Allen Iverson may force the Knicks to move another player simultaneously could make this deal take several days to get done. Iverson clears waivers at 6 p.m. Thursday, but signing him may involve moving another player, possibly G Chris Duhon, which will slow the process considerably. After indicating Wednesday that the Knicks would likely make Iverson an offer, on Thursday GM Donnie Walsh said that no decision had been reached, and one might not come soon. Stay tuned for updates.

WWE SummerSlam Potential Spoilers, Cardinals Sign John Smoltz, Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin at UFC 106, Tons of MLB Rumours, Amare Stoudemire Leaving Suns?

UFC

– UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar (4-1) will face Shane Carwin (11-0) at UFC 106 on November 21 in Las Vegas. It was originally rumoured that Carwin would fight Cain Velasquez (6-0) at UFC 106 with the winner getting a shot at Lesnar next year. However, Valasquez will now fight an unnamed opponent and there’s talk of him getting a shot at the winner of Lesnar-Carwin. For those unaware, Carwin is almost a mirror image of Brock. Should be a dandy.

MLB

– The Cardinals have signed RHP John Smoltz. Smoltz, 42, is 2-5 with an 8.33 ERA in eight starts for the Red Sox this season. Great add for the playoff run. GM John Mozeliak said Smoltz would likely start Sunday at San Diego, and would probably get at least a few turns in the rotation.

– The Astros have placed SS Miguel Tejada on waivers, but pulled him off when another team made a claim. The Astros did the same thing with former C Ivan Rodriguez, and a similar fate is expected to happen with RHP Jose Valverde. For some reason, owner Drayton McLane and GM Ed Wade continue to state that they are still in it for this year and aren’t building for next year.

– The Mets have released RHP Livan Hernandez. The 34-year-old Hernandez was 7-8 with a 5.47 ERA,  and had allowed 18 earned runs in 14 1-3 innings. He allowed six runs in a 10-1 loss to San Francisco on Monday, and the Mets went 2-10 in his last 12 starts.

Speaking of the Mets, they have placed LHP Billy Wagner on waivers, and according to ESPN, he is apparently ready to waive his no-trade clause. Anybody who takes Wagner will have to shell our about $2.7M for the rest of this season, in addition to a $1M buyout for next year. Wagner will be in tough for a job, though, as he has an $8M option for next season. It’s unlikely anyone will claim him off waivers, so the Mets will probably try and work out a trade. Wagner is coming off Tommy John surgery and hasn’t pitched in the bigs since last September, so his trade value is rock bottom. Still, Wagner doesn’t want to finish his career this way and apparently would like to get up to the 420-save mark or thereabouts. He’s at 385 now.

Still with the Mets, they had placed OF Gary Sheffield on waivers last week, and pulled him later on. It’s now believed that Sheff won’t last the season with the team. If the Mets place him on waivers again, they lose the ability to pull him off or negotiate a trade. Sheffield, 41, says he wants to go somewhere with a strong lineup, but thus far, only the Marlins and Rangers have shown interest.

According to the NY Post, Sheffield asked for a contract extension from the Mets Thursday and was denied, and is now threatening to leave the team and might soon be released outright. Things had been running smoothly in New York until Sheff made a couple of curious comments on Tuesday night in reaction to trade rumors. “Based on what I know now, no, I do not think I will be here. But if I am sent to a team that I don’t want to play for, I would go home.” He was scratched from the lineup Thursday night.

– The Brewers have traded 3B Bill Hall to the Mariners for P Ruben Flores. Hall hit 35 home runs in 2006 and was rewarded with a four-year/$24M contract, but he was hitting only .201 with six homers and 24 RBIs in 76 games when the Brewers designated him for assignment last week.

– The Orioles have claimed RHP Chris Lambert off of waivers from the Tigers. The 26-year-old Lambert was 0-1 with a 14.85 ERA in two relief appearances with the Tigers this season. He was 6-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 21 starts with Triple-A Toledo.

– D’Backs RHP Jon Garland has cleared waivers. Arizona will likely have to part with some cash to make up for the $4M left between his contract and his 2010 buyout, but there’s a chance that a contender in need of pitching depth may decide to take their chances and deal for him. Stay tuned.

– The Reds have placed RHP Johnny Cueto (arm) on the 15-day DL. Cueto is 8-10 with a 4.61 ERA in 24 starts.

– The Dodgers have signed RHP Vicente Padilla.

– The Nationals have named Mike Rizzo as their next GM. Rizzo was acting in an interim role this season following the firing of Jim Bowden.

– The Rangers have placed RHP “Everyday” Eddie Guardado (knee) on the 15-day DL.

– The Mariners have transferred LHP Erik Bedard to the 60-day DL. His season is over.

– The Reds have placed OF Willy Taveras (quad) on the 15-day DL.

– The Dodgers have placed RHP Hiroki Kuroda (head) on the 15-day DL, retroactive to August 16.

– The Royals have released 3B Travis Metcalf.

– The White Sox have placed OF Dewayne Wise (shoulder) on the 15-day DL.

– The Mets have placed SS Alex Cora (thumbs) on the 60-day DL.

– The Astros have placed LHP Mike Hampton (torn rotator cuff) on the 15-day DL.

– The Rangers have placed 2B Esteban German (groin) on the 15-day DL.

NBA

– According to sources, F Amare Stoudemire is playing his last year with the Suns this season. Amare was reportedly very unhappy when Shaq was dealt to Cleveland, and was unhappy with being put on the trade block last February when he was supposedly in talks with the Warriors. He’s putting his odds of staying with the team after next summer at 50/50, though, as he can decline a $17.6M salary for 2010-11 next summer and become a free agent. Stay tuned.

– Bucks F Andrew Bogut still hasn’t participated in contact drills as he continues to recover from a lower back stress fracture that ended his season early last year. Bogut’s main goal is to be ready for training camp, but he’s been working on a limited schedule since July and the fact he hasn’t had contact drills yet is a concern.

– Nets F Yi Jianlian may be allowed to skip the rest of the Stankovic Cup in China and return to New Jersey earlier than expected in order to prepare for the start of the season. Yi has been playing very well for Team China, but the Chinese media is reporting that team officials are considering his request to return to the states early.

– According to the Arizona Republic, Cavaliers F Shaquille O’Neal’s new reality show, “Shaq Vs.” apparently was an idea that Shaq stole directly from Suns G Steve Nash when Shaq was originally traded there in February of 2008. Nash talked to a lawyer and now he’s listed as executive producer on the show.

– Knicks G Nate Robinson was arrested Tuesday after officers pulled him over in the Bronx at about 5:30 p.m. and discovered he had a suspended license. According to the NY Post, the 25-year-old RFA was apparently a complete jerk to the cop who pulled him over for driving with an unfastened seat belt. He turned up the volume pretty loud when the cop walked back from Robinson’s SUV to the police cruiser to check his license and then kept singing the words to the rap song when the officer returned to the window. As soon as he heard he was being arrested, Robinson apparently pulled out the I’m-A-Celebrity-card and tried to sway the officer to let him go. KryptoNate was taken to the 52nd Precinct and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and issued a summons to return to court at a later date.

– The Magic have signed G Jason Williams. Williams, who sat out last year, will back up G Jameer Nelson and probably immediately move in front of G Anthony Johnson on the depth chart.

– G Desmond Mason will not return to the Thunder next season.

– The Grizzlies continue to look into G Jamaal Tinsley, G Flip Murray and G Tarence Kinsey.

WWE

– Unless things change at the last minute, Jeff Hardy’s last day with WWE will take place at either SummerSlam or the following SmackDown! taping. WWE is still trying to get him to stay, though. As a result, it pretty much goes without saying that he will be dropping the World Heavyweight Championship to CM Punk next week. Matt Hardy tweeted the following message to Jeff Hardy yesterday morning: “The time is near for the Hardy Empire to begin.. Starting with the Charismatic Enigma.. 8/25/09″ Hmm…

Also, WWE released the first-ever “WWE Kids Poster Book” special edition on Tuesday, which features individual posters of practically every male star on the roster. One glaring omission is that of Jeff Hardy, who is not featured on the poster. You can see the giant poster here.

– There is a lot of talk within WWE about having DX vs. Legacy in the main event position at SummerSlam, even though it would go against the tradition of ending with a title match. The feeling is that if CM Punk is going to beat Jeff Hardy for the World Title, which there’s a good chance of that, it’s better to end SummerSlam on a happy note. This would also indicate that John Cena isn’t planned to take the WWE Title from Randy Orton but that’s not confirmed.

– As of last week, there was a rumour that WWE was planning a major swerve at SummerSlam that would involve either Triple H or Shawn Michaels turning heel at SummerSlam. WWE is now advertising DX vs. Legacy in a steel cage match for the SmackDown and ECW tapings on September 1 at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. This could be a sign that plan was changed or it could be a way to keep a possible heel turn a surprise.

– WWE.com has announced that ECW Champion Christian will defend the gold against #1 contender William Regal at Summerslam this Sunday.

– Former WWE superstar and Hollywood heavyweight Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently spoke to the UK’s The Sun. Some highlights:

His Troubled Teen Years: “I had a very checkered past. I got into trouble a lot and had multiple arrests. For a lot of years I struggled to stay on the right path. I had multiple arrests by the time that I was 17. The last time I was arrested, my parents came down to the police station to get me. My parents were struggling at that time, even to put food on the table. That was a lot of stress at that time and I was adding to it. When they came to the police station I remember their disappointment. For years the disappointment had never bothered me but for some reason this time the disappointment in their eyes moved me. And that was when I realized that I was causing a lot of pain for my parents and I did not want to continue to do that.”

His father’s reaction to ‘The Wrestler’: “He didn’t take it very well. We lived the life that you saw in the movie, The Wrestler. That essentially was my dad. The character that Mickey Rourke played so wonderfully was my dad. So when I graduated from college and had an opportunity to play pro football, naturally it was easy for my father to say he did not want me to wrestle. He had nothing to show from a wrestling career. We lived in a one-bedroom apartment and he did not want that life for me. But instinctively I thought I had something to offer that world of entertainment. It took a little of convincing him but eventually we worked together. But being a parent I now understand where my dad was coming from.”

Getting Into Acting: “Ten years ago I knew that I wanted to be a good actor as I wound down my wrestling career. There is a great amount of acting in wrestling and wrestling is a great form of entertainment. For me that training ground was really invaluable because I did not go to school for acting. I went to school for football and studied criminology. I knew it was going to take time and 10 years went by pretty quickly.”

– Former WWE star Ken “Mr. Kennedy” Anderson’s no-compete clause with WWE is set to expire within the next 2 weeks. He will therefore be able to work for any wrestling promotion that wants to hire him. He now goes under the name Mr. Anderson and TNA is said to have high interest in signing the former WWE star.

– As announced Friday afternoon on WWE.com, Nick “Eugene” Dinsmore was released from his WWE contract. According to several sources, the feeling is that he showed up at last week’s RAW taping looking terribly out of shape and Vince McMahon made the decision right then and there to cut him loose. He had just been hired back about a month ago. McMahon is pretty big on first impressions. For instance, his first impression of Takeshi Morishima following a tryout match a year ago this week killed any possible interest in signing him.

An issue of Power Slam noted the following: “August 19: Still on the warpath, Vince claims two more victims: he basically says Morishima looks like a giant, fat girl and that Laurinaitis was wasting his time by hyping such a s colourless and podgy wrestler. Vince also sagely notes that because fellow Japanese name Kenzo Suzuki tanked in WWE, obviously Morishima was likely to be a failure as well – solely on the basis of their shared ethnicity.”

Reportedly, the creative team wanted to get Eugene on television very quickly, so the fact that he was released after his first appearance adds further credence to the theory given.

– This week’s edition of WWE Monday Night RAW drew a 3.8 rating, which is down from last week‘s 3.9 rating. The first hour did a 3.58, while the second hour finished off with a 3.99.

NHL

– Blackhawks F Patrick Kane, 20, and his cousin James Kane, 21, pleaded not guilty during a brief arraignment before Buffalo judge Thomas Amodeo. The appearance came a day after the two were indicted by a grand jury. The Kanes are facing misdemeanor assault, theft and harassment charges that he and his cousin beat up a cab driver over a fare. The panel dismissed a more serious felony charge of second-degree robbery.

– The Sharks have removed captaincy from F Patrick Marleau. Yeesh, about time.

– The 2-month-old son of Capitals G Jose Theodore has died. The goalie’s sister-in-law made the announcement Thursday during her show on a Montreal-area radio station. Theodore also has a 3-year-old daughter, Romy. My condolences go out to the Theodore family.

– The Hurricanes have signed F Stephane Yelle to a one-year/$550K deal. The 35-year-old had seven goals and 11 assists with Boston, and has won the Stanley Cup twice with the Avalanche.

– The Sabres have signed F Jeff Cowan to a one-year deal. Cowan is an eight-year NHL veteran but spent last season playing for Peoria of the AHL. He previously played two years with Vancouver, where he combined for seven goals and four assists, and 203 penalty minutes in 88 games.

– The Ducks have re-sogned D Brett Festerling to a two-year contract. Festerling played 40 games with Anaheim as a rookie last season, recording five assists and 18 penalty minutes. He also played extensively for the Ducks’ top minor league affiliate in Iowa.

– Mark Messier was not offered the head coaching job with the Oilers last season when Craig MacTavish was fired.

– Stars owner Tom Hicks is not putting the team up for sale. Forbes says the team is worth about $405M, but one suspects somebody could get the team for less than that. Hicks’ HSG has until August of 2010 to satisfy his debts before any kind of movement by creditors could be made to take over the teams. He dug himself a hole, though, when his HSG defaulted on a $10M interest payment at the end of March on $525M in loans.

NFL

– WR Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty to felony weapons charges in a Manhattan court Thursday and received a two-year prison sentence. This could easily end the 32-year-old’s career. NY State still must approve Burress’ plea deal – if it doesn’t, Plax could stand trial for two counts of second-degree criminal weapons possession and one count of second-degree reckless endangerment, and face even more prison time. Plax has probably played his last NFL down.

– The NFP is reporting that Raiders assistant Randy Hanson will turn over medical records, and he’s expected to cooperate with Napa, California police. Police, as well as NFL Security, have been attempting to get Hanson to talk since the story of his fractured jaw emerged earlier this week. It’s believed that he will now cooperate because the Raiders will not allow him to return to his former position. The next step is likely an investigation and a possible felony charge against head coach Tom Cable. Cable has declined to comment.

– The Chiefs have signed WR Ashley Lelie.

TNA

– TNA World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle spoke with WTAO in Pittsburgh. Here’s what he said: “I don’t like confrontation, so I kind of back away from it. This is really hard for me. I spent nine hours in jail and it was the lowest point of my life,” Angle said as he started to break down crying pleading for his reputation. “I was sitting there in a county jail thinking about why I even started dating this girl. I don’t even know when I’m allowed back in my own home. I just hope that the hearing goes okay and I can move back into my home. I just want my life back.”

F1

– YouTube co-founder and CEO Chad Hurley has confirmed his involvement with the new Team US F1. US F1 will be joined on the 2010 starting grid by Manor Grand Prix and Campos Meta 1.

– F1 teams will go back to qualifying on low-fuel for the final session next season. According to FIA , the final 10 cars involved in the Q3 qualifying session will not have to declare their fuel levels due to the fact there will be a ban on refueling next year.

That should bring back the days of a real qualifying shootout in which the fastest car is actually the one on the pole. That was not always the case under the current system as teams were forced to declare their race day fuel levels before Q3, meaning different strategies forced teams to use different fuel levels.

Other changes to the rules will see eight cars knocked out in both Q1 and Q2 to take into account the expected increase to 26 cars next season on the starting grid. The current point system will also be maintained for at least one more season. There have been recommendations to go to an Olympic-styled medal system in which the driver with the most wins would be declared the world champion. Even though the FOTA-based teams have agreed not to use the KERS system next year, the FIA rules have increased the weight of the cars to 620kg to take into account the additional weight of the energy recovery system. Tire warmers, which were also expected to be banned along with refueling, will remain – at least for one more season.

MMA

– Kim Couture, the wife of UFC legend Randy “The Natural” Couture, has responded to Lisa Marie Varon’s (a.k.a. Victoria) comments about a potential MMA bout. “I think that with my name I have a target on me. That’s fine. I don’t imagine that’s going to go away any time soon I’ll fight whoever they put in front of me. If she can make my weight – she seems from the picture a lot taller, a lot bigger than me. But if she can make 135 pounds, if (Strikeforce CEO Scott) Coker wants to put it together then so be it.”

Red Sox Release John Smoltz, Nationals Unlikely to Sign Strasburg, Raptors Deal Ukic and Delfino, RAW Guest Host GMs Revealed, UFC 102 Liddell vs. Nogueira

MLB

– The Red Sox have released RHP John Smoltz. The Cardinals, Dodgers, Astros, Rangers and Marlins are expected to make serious offers to Smoltz, 42, for a relief-role. His contract, however, has him getting paid extra for every day he remains on a major-league roster, which has turned other teams off. One team that isn’t interested is his long-time team, the Braves. Smoltz and the Braves are apparently still not happy with each other, and a lot of apologizing would seemingly need to take place in order to ever have Smoltz back on the team.

A new deal should be complete by August 31. He had an 8.33 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP in eight disappointing starts with the Red Sox, allowing 59 hits in 40 innings. Boston is stuck with the remainder of his one-year, $5.5M contract.

– The Braves have placed OF Nate McLouth (hamstring) on the 15-day DL. He’s hitting .258 with 15 homers and 56 RBIs. McLouth suffered the injury during Saturday’s game against the Phillies. Braves manager Bobby Cox was confident Sunday evening that his outfielder would avoid the DL, but the Braves are in the hunt for a playoff spot and can’t afford to carry an idle player on their 25-man roster. McLouth should be back once his two weeks are up.

– The Nationals have not progressed in contract talks with RHP Stephen Strasburg. The flamethrower was offered a massive deal ($17M with “easily reached incentives” that would make it worth $20M) which he turned down, which would have made him the richest rookie pitcher ever. He’s supposedly more interested in the length of the deal, rather than the numerical figure. Strasburg went 13-1 this season for the Aztecs, leading Division I pitchers with a 1.32 ERA and 195 strikeouts. Last month, he won the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur player in the United States.

– The Tigers have acquired 1B Aubrey Huff from the Orioles for P Brett Jacobson. Huff, 32, was hitting 253/.321/.405 this season with 13 home runs and 72 RBI in 430 at-bats while manning first base for the Orioles. He’ll DH in Detroit, sending OF Carlos Guillen back to the field and killing OF Marcus Thames’ PT.

– The Rays are unlikely to sign top draft picks OF LeVon Washington and INF Kenneth Diekroeger by tonight’s midnight deadline.

– The Rangers have released RHP Vicente Padilla. In 18 starts this season, he went 8-6 with a 4.92 ERA. Padilla had spent the last four seasons with Texas, going 43-34 with a 4.90 ERA in 103 games.

NBA

– The Raptors have traded G Carlos Delfino and G Roko Ukic to the Bucks for F Amir Johnson and G Sonny Weems. Milwaukee’s acquisition of F Hakim Warrick may have made Johnson expendable, and with F Richard Jefferson gone and G Michael Redd recovering from major surgery, they could use some depth on the wings. If the deal goes through, Delfino, who is currently playing in Russia, would need to sign at least a two-year contract. I’m sure liking how this Raptors team is forming this offseason.

– The Thunder are looking at Maurice Cheeks as a safety net if Scott Brooks loses his job.

NHL

– Blackhawks F Patrick Kane has apologized for his cab incident eight days ago.“I haven’t really told anyone my side of the story. The only one who really knows is my lawyer and my family and that’s about as far as it goes. At a time like this, obviously you are worried about different things … being on the cover of a video game or coming to a camp like this or anything you are involved with.” A grand jury is expected to decide this week whether Kane should face criminal charges after the predawn August 9 dispute left the cab driver in his hometown bruised and with broken glasses. Kane and his cousin, James Kane, were arrested after 62-year-old cabbie Jan Radecki told police they attacked him when he said he didn’t have 20 cents change for the fare. The Kanes pleaded not guilty to robbery and misdemeanour counts of theft and criminal mischief.

– The Canucks have signed F Sergei Shirokov. Shirokov, 23, had 17 goals and 41 points in 56 games with CSKA Moscow of the KHL in 2008-09. He has also played in two world junior championships with Russia in 2005 and 2006. In 12 tournament games he had seven goals and six assists. Shirokov, a five-foot-10, 176-pound native of Moscow, was selected 163rd overall by the Canucks in the 2006 NHL draft.

WWE

– Entertainment trade journal Variety has an article up today looking at WWE’s RAW guest host gimmick, noting that WWE RAW has effectively become part of the “talkshow circuit” for celebrities to promote projects. The article, which acknowledges the mainstream publicity WWE has already received for episodes featuring Jeremy Piven and Seth Green, quotes Stephanie McMahon in saying that the program raises the company’s awareness in Hollywood and will hopefully translate to new viewers.

The Variety report deems the program successful thus far, saying that RAW viewership is up 10% since introducing the program. Planned to last until early next year–possibly through WrestleMania 26, the program has attracted many recognizable Hollywood and sports names.

According to the article, the following names have been confirmed to host upcoming episodes of RAW:

- Bob Barker
- Al Sharpton
- Nancy O’Dell
- Floyd Mayweather
- LeBron James

Meanwhile, other big names who are in negotiations include:

- Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson
- Sharon & Ozzie Osbournes
- Danny DeVito
- Regis Philbin
- Kelly Ripa
- Jimmy Fallon
- Rachael Ray
- MC Hammer
- Woody Harrelson
- Serena Williams
- Ashton Kutcher

– Jim Ross has updated his blog at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights:

Kurt Angle’s Weekend Arrest: “Let me make it clear that Angle has not been convicted of any thing. I never even mentioned the allegations regarding alleged physical abuse to a woman which, by the way, I do not believe. The issue is that when external factors adversely affect one’s life and when one’s life is under such a professional microscope and is overly scrutinized there are times when one simply needs to take him or herself out of the game for a while to regroup.” Ross continued, “I remain steadfast that I believe Kurt Angle to be a good hearted human being but I also believe that sometimes that he can be his own worst enemy. Many of us have that propensity. The drive it takes to create an Olympic Champion can be both a blessing and a curse.”

Relationships In Pro Wrestling: “I often times see wrestling couples hooking up and I truly feel empathy for them … with the exception of a minority of examples, ‘wrestling relationships’ are usually bound to implode which then adversely affects the locker room and often times forces many within said locker room to ‘choose sides.’ Choosing sides in a matter such as this isn’t good as the only ‘side’ a wrestler should have is the ‘side’ of the company that pays them their pay check.”

Edge’s Recovery & WWE Return: “I hope Edge is back in time for WM26 in Arizona. Time will tell as no one can absolutely say one way or another at this time when Edge will be cleared to go 100 percent and there is no sense in coming back to the ring until then.”

On a side note, Edge is scheduled to begin rehab on his Achilles ankle this week after undergoing extensive surgery five weeks ago to repair a torn tendon. The Rated R Superstar won’t be 100% for around six months, which puts him on track for a return around the Royal Rumble.

– Kane vs. The Great Khali has been officially added to the SummerSlam card and is now listed at WWE.com

TNA

– The Pittsburg Post-Gazette reports that due to a scheduling conflict, TNA champion Kurt Angle’s hearing regarding his Saturday arrest has been pushed back to September 15th. The original hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, but Angle will be in Orlando for TNA’s iMPACT! tapings. Angle is currently free on $10K bond.

– TNA Knockout Lisa Marie Varon (a.k.a. Victoria) is heading to the world of MMA and plans to make her pro MMA debut in the next year. Her manager, J.T. Stewart, who also manages former UFC champion Rich Franklin, discussed her plans with the Dayton Daily News.

Stewart said, “Obviously, with the exposure from the WWE, she already had the marquee value. She has the name. Women’s MMA is just starting to peak, and with her built-in fan base, she’ll have lot of opportunities with endorsements, sponsorships, autograph signings and card shows. Plus, she’s also just very athletic. We’ve seen Lashley and Lesnar cross over and do very well in MMA. I’d expect no less from her.”

Despite Varon’s recent debut with TNA Wrestling, Stewart said the nonrestrictive contract will allow Varon to wrestle and compete in MMA simultaneously.

Following Saturday’s Strikeforce MMA event featuring Gina Carano and Cris Cyborg, Strikeforce now appears to be the place to be for women fighters. Stewart and Varon currently have their sights set on Strikeforce fighter Kim Couture (1-1), the ex-wife of former UFC champ Randy Couture. “That’s definitely a fight we’re interested in,” Stewart said.

UFC

– The UFC 102 main event will pit Chuck Liddell (16-9) vs. Antonio Nogueira (31-5-1). Holy crap.

– ABC has released the names of the cast members for the new season of “Dancing with the Stars.” TNA Champion Kurt Angle had been rumored for the show, but he didn’t make the cut. UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell will be a contestant.

NFL

– FOXsports.com’s Jay Glazer says he’s “positively convinced” that QB Brett Favre will soon have talks with Vikings about joining them for this season after all. SI’s Peter King seconds this feeling to a degree, saying if the team struggles at quarterback, they’ll call Favre. It’s pretty interesting stuff considering this story has been dead for two weeks now and both the coach and the owner said they closed the book on Favre. Glazer even has a Vikings player saying “I’m telling you it’s already done.”

– According to AOL NFL Fanhouse, Raiders head coach Tom Cable fractured the jaw of defensive assistant Randy Hanson during a fight early in training camp. Hanson’s refusal to reveal his attacker’s identity means Cable probably won’t be charged with a crime, as he could’ve been hit with felony charges. Napa police consider the case closed, “unless we are re-contacted by the victim, and the victim…want(s) us to follow through and pursue an investigation.” Hanson also had problems with ex-Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin.

Patrick Kane Arrested and Charged with Assault and Robbery, Leafs Trade Pogge to Ducks, White Sox Claim Alex Rios, The Big Show vs. Shaquille O’Neal?

NHL

– Blackhawks F Patrick Kane has been charged with second-degree robbery, fourth-degree criminal mischief and assault charges after an altercation with a taxi driver on Sunday morning, after they apparently gave a cab driver $15.00 for a $13.80 cab ride and wanted change back ($0.20), which the driver didn’t have. Kane, a South Buffalo native, was with his cousin. James Kane, 21, at 5 a.m. when there was a dispute over the fare. The cab driver, Jan Radecki, told police he was punched in the face and head, grabbed by the throat and had his glasses broken during the incident. Both Kanes were charged with second-degree robbery, a Class C felony, as well as fourth-degree criminal mischief and theft of services, both Class A misdemeanours.

The Blackhawks have initially backed Kane following his arrest. Chicago said in a released statement, “We are aware of the allegations toward Patrick Kane. He is a big part of our organization and a team leader and we stand behind him. As we are still collecting all the facts, it would be premature to comment further at this time.” Radecki said, “They broke my glasses, they ripped my clothes … all over 20 cents.”

Classless. Whether or not this is true (it usually is, just ask O.J. Simpson, Barry Bonds, etc.), it’s not like Kane is counting pennies on his salary. He makes more in a year than a lot of us will see in our lifetime, and the fact that he assaults someone over 20 cents is absolutely pathetic.

– The Leafs have traded G Justin Pogge to the Ducks for a conditional pick in 2011 that will be based on his performance this coming season. Pogge had one win and a 4.35 GAA in seven appearances with the Leafs last season. He spent most of the season with the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies, where he had 26 wins and a 2.70 GAA in 53 games.

– Prosecutors will reopen the investigation into the death of Rangers draft pick F Alex Cherepanov, who collapsed during a Continental Hockey League game last year in Russia. The federal prosecutor’s Investigative Committee ruled last month that team doctors were not to blame for Cherepanov’s death and would face no criminal charges. Investigators said doctors with Siberian team Avangard Omsk had no reason to suspect the 19-year-old suffered from a chronic heart problem and therefore did not prescribe the medicine he was taking. Cherepanov, a first-round pick in 2007, died after collapsing on the bench during an Oct. 13 game in Chekhov, a town outside Moscow. Authorities say an autopsy showed he suffered from myocarditis, a condition that obstructs blood flow to the heart and other organs.

– The Hurricanes have sued a Raleigh hip-hop artist who produced a song promoting the franchise, saying the man has violated team trademarks. The federal lawsuit accuses Tyrone Banks of misusing trademarks by referring to the tune as “the official Carolina Hurricanes song” and wearing a Hurricanes jersey in promotional material. Banks produced “Carolina Hurricanes” in 2007 and provided a copy of the song to the team, asking the Hurricanes play the music during games, according to court documents. The lawsuit said the Hurricanes did use the song during games and short segments of it appeared in a television ad and online video. Banks also received complimentary tickets to a game, when the Hurricanes played the song, highlighted Banks in the audience and displayed his name on the scoreboard.

– Former NHL D Dallas Eakins is the new head coach of the Toronto Marlies.

MLB

– According to the Chicago Tribune, as reported here earlier, it was indeed the White Sox who put a claim on Jays OF Alex Rios. The two teams have till 2 p.m. ET tomorrow to work out a trade, or for the Jays to outright release. Rios has a .262 batting average, 14 homers and 62 RBIs this season, but is owed nearly $60M from 2010 to 2014.

– According to the LA Times, the Dodgers are looking at adding either RHP John Smoltz or RHP Vicente Padilla. Padilla was DFA by the Rangers last week, but is generating interest from around the NL. According to ESPN, the Dodgers aren’t the only team who are interested in Smoltz. Stay tuned.

– The Nationals have waived SS Christian Guzman, and the Red Sox are known to be interested. Reports indicate that nothing will happen, though. a baseball source told MLB.com, “Guzman was on eggshells for two days asking [acting general manager Mike Rizzo] whether or not he was going to be traded. That story should have never came out.”

– Padres RHP Chris Yougn has been shut down for the remainder of the season. Young has been on the DL since June 17 with shoulder inflammation.

– The Brewers have acquired RHP David Weathers from the Reds for a PTBNL. Weathers had a 3.32 ERA in 38 innings as the setup man for Francisco Cordero this season. The Reds could have kept him for next year at $3.7M or let him go for $400K.

WWE

– According to sources, WWE is currently planning a three-hour episode of WWE RAW in September that will feature a match between The Big Show and Cavaliers F Shaquille O’Neal. The two seven-footers planted the seed for their possible showdown last month when Shaq served as the celebrity guest host of RAW. The two men had a staredown that ended with Shaq throwing the Big Show out of the ring.

O’Neal is currently working on “Shaq vs.,” a TV show where he challenges different pro athletes at their own game. He will swim against Michael Phelps, box Oscar De La Hoya and take on Serena Williams at tennis. Shaq wrestling the Big Show would give WWE Raw some mainstream media attention, but some are already questioning the decision to air the match on cable when WWE could give their struggling PPV buyrates a boost.

There is also a chance that Shaq’s schedule could prevent the match from happening. The NBA’s pre-season begins in September, so we’ll have to wait and see if this match ever happens.

– WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan is determined to wrestle again. After collapsing and being rushed to the hospital a few months ago, the Hulkster underwent laser surgery on his spine to relieve “constant” and “crushing” back pain. He had also experienced numbness in his legs and was unable to stand for more than a few minutes at a time.

Hogan said he opted for laser surgery because a more invasive back surgery involving metal rods in his back would have likely killed his chances for a comeback. The whole procedure was filmed for his daughter’s reality show, Brooke Knows Best, and aired last night on VH1. The Hulkster said he was feeling better almost immediately after the surgery.

– DX is being advertised for shows in two weeks, which should spoil HBK’s impending return.

– To put some rumours to rest, Brian Kendrick did not ask for his release from WWE like he did during his previous stint in the company in 2004. Rather, John Laurinaitis cited the tough economy and creative having nothing for him upon informing of his release from the company two weeks ago. Kendrick has been telling friends that it was implied to him the only reason he lasted as long as he did in WWE was because Pat Patterson liked him.

– Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog over at JRsBarBQ.com Here’s what JR said about:

Ricky Steamboat Jr.: “Nice to hear that Ricky Steamboat, Jr. is now competing in Puerto Rico. Getting all the worldly experience that he has received in wrestling is great training for young Steamboat who, as I mentioned long ago, is going to be a big star in wrestling if he continues to improve and stays healthy. The son of ‘The Dragon’ is being schooled perfectly and is getting used to life on the road, different styles of in ring styles and will be so far advanced from the young men and women in a training camp it won’t even be close. Nothing can replicate young wrestlers getting ready for ‘Broadway’ like wrestling a variety of competitors in a multitude of environments. Plus, getting used to being a responsible traveler is also a benefit.”

BJ Penn & UFC 101: “B.J. Penn seemed to be back in B.J. Penn form Saturday night on what was a strange night for the UFC in Philly. UFC 101 was always going to be challenged to follow UFC 100 as that’s like Backlash following Wrestlemania. The crowd in Philly, I don’t know if the majority of fans were from Philly or not, was unique to say the least and at times they did not do the show any favors.”

RAW In Calgary: “A WWE Superstars bout, WGN America..Thursday 8/7central… will be taped Monday night, likely after Raw concludes, which, I would assume. will feature the Hart Dynasty in some incarnation. If this happens, this will be a thrill, I’m sure, for the trio of Calgary natives who will get to perform in the ring at a WWE event in their home town before friends and family. I’m sure that the Calgary faithful will welcome the young Hart’s back home with open arms … I have no idea if Bret Hart is going to be in Calgary when WWE passes through Monday night but it would be great to see him if he were. I know I speak for many who will be in attendance when I say that.”

– Hulk Hogan’s ex-wife Linda was interviewed on ABC’s Good Morning America this morning and shed some light on what led to the couple’s divorce.

Hulk Cheating With Brooke’s Friend: “There were infidelities. It scared me because I thought ‘Oh my God, is that my fault? Is he moving on? Am I just a dumb housewife? Am I too fat, am I too dumb?’ You just start doubting yourself and that was really sad.”

Her 19-year-old Boyfriend Charlie Hill: “He’s a great friend and a good soul and a great support system for me.” She acknowledged that her relationship with Hill is “definitely weird,” but isn’t bothered when tabloids label her a “cougar.”

Hulk Saying He Understands How OJ Could Murder His Wife: “I don’t know if he could go there or not I don’t think so but at the time I wasn’t sure. I knew that he was probably jealous or envious or upset with the whole situation that he didn’t have control of me. He didn’t know what I was doing, who I was seeing and it bothered him.”

Brooke Claiming She Uses Drugs: “It’s just about the allegations and it’s a whole publicity team that was on my husband’s side that helped facilitate that.” Although her relationship with Brooke is currently a wreck, she hopes “one day that will change.”

NBA

– The Celtics have signed RFA F Glen Davis to a two-year/$6M deal.

– Former Nuggets F Linas Kleiza has signed a two-year/$12M deal with Olympiakos. Kleiza will make considerably more than he would have in the NBA, and this deal is even richer than what Olympiakos reportedly offered G Nate Robinson and G Allen Iverson (two years/$10M). Kleiza can opt-out next summer, should he choose to return to the NBA.

– Former Lakers assistant coach Kurt Rambis has signed with the Wolves.

– The Pistons have hired Brian Hill as their assistant coach.

– The Heat remain interested in G Allen Iverson and G Stephon Marbury.

– The Hawks are discussing a deal with F Joe Smith. The Hawks are also taking a look at F Garret Siler, F Jason Collins, F Johan Petro, F Stromile Swift and Courtney Sims.

– According to the Toronto Sun, the Grizzlies are for sale, but will only be moved sold if the team remains in Memphis.

NFL

– Bucs WR Antonio Bryant will be out 3-4 weeks with a torn meniscus in his knee. The knee will be “scoped” shortly.

MMA

– Bobby Lashley’s next mixed martial arts fight has been announced and once again, he’ll be fighting somebody with experience inside a pro wrestling ring. Lashley (4-0) will face Ron “H20″ Waterman on 10/3 in Denver, Colorado (16-6-2). The event will be presented by Prize Fight Promotions, the company that promoted his most recent fight against Bob Sapp this past June.

The 44-year-old Waterman is considered to be a “journeyman” fighter and has not had a big MMA victory since 2004 when he beat Kevin Randleman. Like Lashley, Waterman is a big guy and with strong wrestling credentials. He’s fought for the UFC and PRIDE and is also a professional wrestler. He trained at Ohio Valley Wrestling back when it was a WWE developmental territory. He also appeared on WWE house shows and in dark matches, before moving on to wrestle in Japan while continuing his MMA career.
