The Peep Show Returns!

After a ridiculous hiatus, The Peep Show is back and in full effect, with Volume 1, new-and-improved. The format is going to be a bit different, but it’s changed for the better. Sit back and enjoy!

Habs Deal Halak
I don’t get this. Not only are they trading the better goalie, but they’re doing so in exchange for nothing. Many of you are saying that Halak was an RFA, and that they would’ve lost Halak when someone signed him to a huge contract, since the Habs can’t afford to match with roughly a dozen players as either RFAs or UFAs that need to be re-signed. So no doubt, he had to be moved – financially, they don’t have a choice – however, they should’ve waited until Draft Day to pull the trigger on a move. Doing so would’ve maximized their return. While Eller and Schultz are mid-range prospects, they could’ve easily gotten something far better at the time of the Draft, since teams are still assessing their needs for the upcoming season.

New GM Pierre Gauthier, in his first move since taking the reigns, really dropped the ball here. Halak stood on his head, and single-handedly got the team past the league’s top scoring team, the Capitals, and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Penguins, all with an aging and depleted defence. Again, he had to be moved, but they got nothing in return. For those that don’t remember, former GM Bob Gainey’s price tag for Halak was a number one centre (namely, Flyers’ F Jeff Carter). Neither Eller nor Schultz will pan out to be anything near the calibre player that Carter is. Barring something miraculous, the Habs will begin 2010-11 with G Carey Price between the pipes. While he is only 22, the concern for him in Montreal following his stellar rookie campaign, is that his confidence is shattered and that he may ultimately need a change in scenery. Expect the Habs to sign a veteran backup to guide Price and push him along, but don’t be surprised if there – once again – ends up being a goalie controvery in La Belle Province.

Lakers Win Championship #16

Gonna be honest, I watched very little playoff basketball this year. It’s just so boring. The NHL playoffs were incredible – new teams, lots of drama, controversy, and overall, just great hockey being played. Can’t say the same for the NBA, where the two most winningest franchises squared off in another NBA Championship. Yes, the Lakers, yes, they won, and yes, Kobe got MVP. Did anyone really doubt that that was going to happen?

Leafs Name Phaneuf Captain
I like it. He’s coming off a disappointing season offensively, but he’s very young and is capable of providing the leadership needed to succeed, both on the ice and in the dressing room. Phaneuf has a reputation of being vocal and outgoing, something that no one else on the team stands out as being capable of. Phaneuf is the first Leafs captain since F Mats Sundin in 2008, and while D Tomas Kaberle was originally thought to be the next captain, that is no longer going to happen. In fact, his days wearing the blue and white appear to be numbered. The Leafs will continue looking forward, and with names such as Phaneuf, Phil Kessel, Tyler Bozak, Jonas Gustavsson and Luke Schenn, the future may indeed be now.

WWE Releases Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan)
As many of you know, NXT rookie Bryan Danielson was fired for choking ring announcer Justin Roberts with his tie on a PG episode of Raw. There have been countless rumours going back and forth about whether this is storyline or not, but it appears to be legit. While the move may have been stupid, it was really minor, and it was only aired for a split-second. To fire him, or anyone for that, seems a bit much. Especially since Danielson is one of the most talented in-ring performers in quite some time, WWE cannot afford for him to not be under their creative control. Unfortunately for them, his 90-day no-compete clause will eventually expire, and unless WWE figures something out to bring him back, he’s likely to sign with TNA Wrestling. My money is on Danielson eventually re-signing with WWE shortly down the road, but for now, he’s gone. Linda McMahon’s senate run is too high-priority for something like this to go unnoticed.

Mailbag
Sometimes there’s a lot of mail to sift through, sometimes there’s very little. Depending on what it is, I may or may not post it here. Because of good timing, I will this time. Both of these come via Twitter, where you can find me below.

Q: Can you see Brian Burke acquiring Bobby Ryan?

A: It’s very possible. He’s an RFA, and the Ducks may not have enough cash to match an offer that comes their way. Ducks’ GM Bob Murray suggested that there is plenty of money saved up for Ryan to stay in Anaheim, but the contract talks continue – the debate may be in regard to the dollar signs, or it may be in regard to the length of the contract. It’s possible that Ryan may have his sights set elsewhere come July 1, and may speak with the Ducks and ask them not to match. Signing in Toronto would put him back with GM Brian Burke, who drafted him in 2005 behind Penguins’ F Sidney Crosby. Burke pushed Ryan to become more physically fit and held him back until he felt he was ready to enter the NHL stage. Ryan signing in Toronto makes him a #1 forward, something he will never be in Anaheim thanks to F Ryan Getzlaf and F Corey Perry. Burke was rumoured to have offered a deal for Ryan involving D Tomas Kaberle, one-for-one, which was turned down. No question that Burke wants him bad, and he knows how to build teams up from nothing. Ryan missed out on Burke’s Cup in Anaheim and may not want to risk that again. In the end, it may not come down to dollars and years for Ryan. July 1 is right around the corner.

Q: Who is the best wrestler of all-time?

A: Best all-around is Shawn Michaels, no doubt. In terms of charisma and character, no one beat Stone Cold. If you want wrestling as a science, Ric Flair. If you’re looking for technical mat wrestling, Bret Hart is probably the first name that comes to mind. A lot of people ask me about Hulk Hogan – I think he was in the right place at the right time. No doubt, he was good, but the era that he entered in is the reason why he became so huge.

What’s next?

Hell if I know. As usual, I have a few projects up my sleeve that I haven’t really tried getting off the ground yet. We’ll see how they progress, and depending on that, I may or may not put them up here. Anyways, that’s all for now. I’ll be back with some more once…well, some more stuff happens. As always, I’m reachable through the links below.

Izzo Declines Cavs, Raps Trade Rumours, Amare, Chipper Jones Retiring?, MLB Rumours, NHL News & Rumours, TNA Releases Hall, Flair Making Four Horsemen Stable

NBA

– Tom Izzo has officially declined the five-year/$30M contract offer from the Cavaliers to remain with the Michigan Spartans. Izzo acknowledged that being unable to speak with James played a part in his life- and career-altering decision. The Cavs’ search for a head coach will likely focus on Byron Scott (who may wait for the Lakers and Clippers to settle their benches before deciding), as well as Mike Woodson and Brian Shaw.

– Steve Kerr will not return as president and GM of the Suns next season and will likely return to a job as a TV analyst. The Suns went 52-28 this season and reached the Western Conference finals, but team owner Robert Sarver reportedly wanted Kerr to take a pay cut. “I wouldn’t say it’s a big surprise. It boiled down to a number of things, including lifestyle and the opportunity. I was hoping to have him back.” Kerr is only 44 years old, so he may very well return to an NBA front office someday.

Kerr’s resignation “could have dramatically negative impact on [the Suns'] ability to re-sign Amare,” according to Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Kerr just met with Amare’s agent last week, and Amare had a “strong belief” in his abilities to build a championship team. The Suns apparently wanted Kerr to take a pay cut, but their stinginess may end up costing them in the long run.

– The Toronto Star reports that the Raptors are looking for potential suitors for F Hedo Turkoglu, and could make a package deal involving G Jose Calderon, G Jarrett Jack and their #13 overall pick in the draft. On top of those options, the Raptors can still work a sign-and-trade deal to get some value if F Chris Bosh skips town. We may not have to wait long for GM Bryan Colangelo’s first move, as beat writer Doug Smith feels that “all signs point to some kind of transaction coming down the pike before the draft.”

– ESPN reports that a Game 7 win by the Lakers will give coach Phil Jackson an extra $2M in addition to his $12M salary. Jackson’s contract runs out July 1 and he has said he will take a few weeks to see his doctor and decide whether he is returning to the Lakers next season for a likely lower salary or retiring.

– A Celtics team source said Tuesday night that Celtics’ F Kendrick Perkins (knee), who suffered a right knee injury in the first quarter, was “done.” Officially, Perkins and the Celtics are awaiting results of an MRI, and while there’s still a chance he could play in Thursday’s Game 7, it appears to be a foregone conclusion that he suffered a serious injury and is out. At this point, good news would probably mean he didn’t tear his ACL or MCL, but either way, he doesn’t sound at all likely to play in Game 7.

– Raptors’ G Jarrett Jack has expressed interest in remaining with the Raptors. “Obviously there’s a level of frustration with it, being that you want to put some core pieces around you and know that you have those pieces in place and try to build around that. And when one of those pieces kind of goes awry after that, it’s tough, especially after just one year. But I have confidence in coach and the front office that they’ll put out the best product possible.”"

MLB

– According to the AP, Braves’ 3B Chipper Jones hinted that he’d retire at season’s end. “It’s obvious that it’s something I’ve been thinking about. I need to go through the proper channels. Once those have all been taken care of, everybody’s questions will be answered.” Chipper is owed $28M in guaranteed money he’s owed for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. After chatting retirement options with Braves management Tuesday, though, Jones Jones has canceled a tentatively scheduled meeting with the media. In other words, he’s not going to discuss his future plans at the moment. Chipper is struggling this season, both at the plate and with his own health, but the Braves are sitting atop the NL East standings and don’t need any distractions. November, not June, is the time for retirement talk.

– The Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs haven’t talked to any teams about making trades yet but will begin the process if the losing goes on for the next two or three weeks. On the list for potential trades are 1B Derrek Lee, LHP Ted Lilly, OF Kosuke Fukudome, LHP Tom Gorzelanny and OF Xavier Nady. Lee and Fukudome have no-trade clauses; the team has not asked them to waive the clauses yet.

– A source tells Craig Calcaterra of NBC Sports that the Rangers are “getting closer” to acquiring Astros’ RHP Roy Oswalt. The major hurdle, of course, is that the financially-strapped Rangers are trying to convince the MLB to allow them to take on Oswalt’s salary. The players “are more or less agreed to,” according to Calcaterra. Oswalt is still a major financial commitment — nearly $27M, including the prorated portion of his $15M salary for this season, $16M for 2011 and at least a $2M buyout on his $16M option for 2012 — so it shouldn’t be assumed that Major League Baseball will see it their way.

The Fort Worth Stat-Telegram, however, says a Rangers official has told the paper that there is no truth to this rumour, but the team is trying to add some offense and has spoken to the Orioles about 3B Ty Wigginton and the Marlins about 1B Wes Helms.

– The Athletics have acquired 1B Conor Jackson from the D’Backs for RHP Sam Demel. Jackson has been a fairly consistent hitter throughout his career with the Diamondbacks, at least when he’s not battling Valley Fever. He will step into a rotation in the Oakland outfield and will probably hold just about the same amount of fantasy value as he did in Arizona.

– Orioles’ 2B Brian Roberts (back) will be out for an additional four-to-six weeks. Roberts has been sidelined since the first week of the season and there’s been nothing but setbacks since then.

– The Dodgers have placed RHP Chad Billingsley (groin) on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 13.

– The Yankees have placed RHP Sergio Mitre (oblique) on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 5.

– The Yankees have placed OF Marcus Thames (strained right hamstring) on the 15-day DL.

– Cardinals’ RHP Brad Penny (back) will be out until at least the end of June, and it could be much longer, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. An examination on Monday showed that Penny’s upper back strain has yet to completely heal. A few weeks ago it looked like this injury wasn’t going to be a big deal, but it’s already been lingering for a month, and is showing no signs of going away.

NHL

– The Leafs have officially named D Dion Phaneuf their captain. The Leafs have been without a captain since F Mats Sundin in 2008. Phaneuf is the 18th captain of the Maple Leafs and the 22nd in Toronto franchise history.

– Hockey Hall of Famer Cam Neely will be named the president of the Bruins. The Bruins have scheduled a “major announcement” for Wednesday. The Bruins have not had a president since Harry Sinden stepped down in 2006 after 17 years in the position. Neely played the last 10 years of his career in Boston and twice helped the Bruins reach the Stanley Cup finals. They have not been back since 1990.

– The Boston Globe reports that the odds of the Bruins acquiring Senators’ F Jason Spezza for the #2 overall pick in the 2010 entry draft are slim to none. The Globe points out that the Bruins already have a strong core of centers in Marc Savard, David Krejci, and Patrice Bergeron. More importantly, the Bruins have cap concerns as it is and they’d be hard pressed to find a way to acquire Spezza and stay under the cap. The Blue Jackets were also initially mentioned as a possible trading partner for Spezza, but it seems equally unlikely that Columbus would hand Ottawa the #4 overall pick.

– D Rob Blake is expected to officially announce his retirement on Friday. Blake, 40, was one of the league’s best defensemen over his career with the Kings, Avalanche and Sharks, making seven All-Star teams and winning the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman for Los Angeles in 1998. He is 10th on the career list with 240 goals as a defenseman, went to the Stanley Cup finals in 1993 with Los Angeles, won the Cup in 2001 with Colorado, won a gold medal for Canada the following year and helped the Sharks post the best regular-season record in the Western Conference in each of his two seasons in San Jose.

– The Edmonton Journal reports that the Oilers may buyout captain F Ethan Moreau, F Patrick O’Sullivan and F Robert Nilsson. O’Sullivan is due to make $2.95M next season while the other two each have $2M left on their deals. The Senators are also considering a buyout for F Jonathan Cheechoo ($3.5M). If a player is 26 or older, the team has to fork over two thirds of the money left on the deal. If the player is younger than that and gets bought out, though, he only gets one third of the money left on the deal.

– Canucks’ F Alex Burrows (torn labrum in shoulder) underwent surgery last week and he may miss some time at the start of next season. “He may not be ready to play until sometime in October or November,” said his agent Paul Corbeil. The shoulder of Burrows had reportedly been bothering him since the second half of the regular season, but he wanted to play through it. The injury is thought to be the same as the one that F Pavol Demitra had this past campaign. The Canucks will have their fingers crossed that the recovery of Burrows goes smoother, as Demitra had to miss the first 47 games after a second surgery was required. Burrows will be evaluated again sometime in the next two weeks to see where he is at in his rehabilitation. Stay tuned.

– The Canadiens have bought out the final season of F George Laraque’s three-year/$4.5M contract. He was banished from the team that day because Laraque had become a distraction. He remained on the roster for the rest of the season, but was not seen at games or practices. Laraque, who was in and out of the lineup in recent seasons because of back problems, had one goal and two assists in 28 games this season. In two seasons with the Canadiens, he had one goal and four assists in 61 games.

– The Canucks have re-signed D Aaron Rome to a two-year/$1.5M deal. Rome will make $700K next season and $800K the following year.

– The Stars have signed G Brent Krahn to a two-way contract. Krahn played 22 games for the Texas Stars of the AHL this season, winning 17 games with five shutouts and a 1.83 GAA.

– The Blue Jackets have fired former interim head coach Claude Noel, assistants Gary Agnew and Gord Murphy and strength and conditioning coach Barry Brennan.

NFL

– NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reports that the Seahawks are “quite interested” in Bills’ RB Marshawn Lynch, should they decide to trade him. This disputes an ESPN report from late last week that Lynch “has zero trade value.” Seattle is an excellent fit on paper following the release of LenDale White. The Seahawks also use a zone-blocking system similar to what Lynch played in at Cal. Still, they might not offer more than a late-round pick. Lynch joined his Bills teammates on the practice field for the start of this week’s OTAs on Tuesday. Smart move – if he wants to escape his current third-string role in Buffalo, he’s going to have to clean up his act and show some dedication.

– Redskins’ DE Albert Hayneswoth is still pushing for a trade and will not attend the Redskins’ upcoming minicamp after all. “The Redskins are trying to establish a new regime with new schemes at Redskins Park, and it is not an organization that Albert would have ever been attracted to just a short year ago – regardless of the money,” said Haynesworth’s agent. Haynesworth believes his talents are wasted in a 3-4 scheme. Coach Mike Shanahan’s attempt to take a hard-line stance on his best defender’s absence from voluntary offseason activities has exacerbated the situation. The Redskins will have to consider fining Haynesworth for missing mandatory work.

– The Saints have re-signed RFA RB Pierre Thomas to a one-year/$1.684M contract. The Saints threatened to reduce Thomas’ salary by $1.1M if he didn’t sign the tender, which would’ve been significant for a player who’s never made more than the NFL minimum. Instead, Thomas is showing good faith that the team will work with him on a long-term deal up to his expectations. While Thomas won’t get Steven Jackson money, a Michael Turner-like deal in the $5-6M range annually over 4-5 seasons could be realistic for the 25-year-old.

– A day after assuring that he’s not “mad” at the Titans organization, RB Chris Johnson took to his Twitter account to express frustration with his contract situation. “Just got off the phone with my agent, and it’s not good news. I’m feeling like Darrelle Revis right now. At least they’re offering him something. [The Titans are] not offering me nothing.” The primary issue here is that CJ2K has three years left on his contract, and the Titans are leery of setting a precedent that other players will use against them. There’s no telling how this will play out until training camp starts.

– Chargers unsigned RFAs Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill have reportedly made “financial preparations” in advance of executing lengthy holdouts that could last through Week 10 of the regular season. Updating a previous item, the players’ one-year tenders have not yet been formally reduced, leaving a “slight chance” that Jackson and McNeill could still sign at some point Tuesday. Should V-Jax fail to report until after Week 10, he’d stand to lose a whopping $3.062M. The same course of action by McNeill would cost the four-year starting left tackle $2.956M.

– The Broncos have re-signed RFA OLB Elvis Dumervil to a one-year/$3.168M contract. The sides will continue to work on a long-term deal. Dumervil, 26, set or tied career highs in tackles (48), sacks (17), and forced fumbles (4) last season.

WWE

– Monday’s episode of WWE RAW with actor Mark Feuerstein as guest host did a 3.42 cable rating, up from last week’s 3.09. The show averaged 4,883,000 viewers and did hours of 3.36 and 3.5.

– NBA legend Michael Jordan was backstage at Monday’s WWE RAW from Charlotte. It’s been rumoured for some time that WWE wants Jordan to host an upcoming episode of RAW, so you can bet the idea was pitched this week.

– With next year’s WrestleMania 27 still 9 months away,WWE officials are already working with city officials from Atlanta, Georgia, the host city.

– Actress Florence Henderson, who played “Carol Brady” on the classic Brady Bunch television show, will be guest hosting the July 12 Raw from Lexington, Kentucky. No guest host has been announced for next week’s RAW, the night after no Fatal 4 Way.

TNA

– Scott Hall has reportedly been fired by TNA Wrestling. He was written off of storylines at last night’s television taping for Thursday night’s episode. TNA stripped The Band — Hall, Kevin Nash, and Eric Young — of the TNA Tag Team Championship and set up a mini-tournament. The winning team will face The Motor City Machineguns for the vacant titles at next month’s Victory Road PPV. Last month, Hall was arrested outside of Orlando, Florida two days before Sacrifice. He worked the event and reportedly did not inform management of his arrest. He was charged with disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest after being arrested at the Hitching Post Bar. Hall has since pled not guilty to the charges. His next scheduled court date is July 1 in Seminole County court.

– At Monday night’s TNA iMPACT! tapings (set to air Thursday night on Spike), Ric Flair announced that he was reforming the Four Horsemen in TNA, except the new group would be known as “Fortune.” The group consists of AJ Styles, Desmond Wolfe, Kazarian and Beer Money. During the show, Flair has a confrontation with Jay Lethal, who came out dressed like Flair and acting like Flair. After Lethal wrestles Desmond Wolfe later in the show, Ric Flair comes out and helps Wolfe attack Lethal. Hulk Hogan comes out and asks Ric Flair to reveal his big announcement. Flair says he’s coming out of retirement once again – and will be wrestling Jay Lethal at TNA Victory Road on July 11.

– Updating a previous item, sources indicate that TNA’s “major changes” will be that the company will be dropping the monthly PPV format and instead would be running live specials on Spike TV. It’s still possible that TNA would keep 2-3 PPV events a year on their calendar, but the monthly PPV format has proven to not be profitable for TNA and the company could actually make more money from Spike TV paying them for these live television specials. Again, this is still a rumour, but it does jive with Dixie Carter’s comments about Spike TV President Kevin Kay being “all in” and on board with TNA’s major changes. Stay tuned for the latest on this developing story.

– As seen last night at Slammiversary, Roxxi agreed to put her TNA career on the line against Madison Rayne and her Women’s Knockout Championship. Rayne retained her title, after hitting Roxxi with the championship belt, ending her TNA career in the process. Sources within TNA indicate she is indeed through with the company. Roxxi was not informed of her release from the company until yesterday, according to f4wonline.com. She was visibly upset prior to and after her Slammiversary bout. The decision garnered much heat backstage as many feel TNA could have handled the situation better. Considering Angelina Love and Daffney have been cleared to wrestle, it appears as if TNA no longer needs or has any creative plans for Roxxi, hence her abrupt departure from the organization.

– ODB posted the following on Twitter on Monday afternoon:

“thanks tna fans for all the support but tna and odb have parted ways.it was a decision I made.bamm bitches”

– Tommy Dreamer, who made his TNA debut at Sunday’s Slammiversary pay-per-view, wrote the following on Twitter following his appearance:

“TNA THANKS SO MUCH I AM ON A MISSION HOPE WE ALL ENJOY THE RIDE”

Dion Phaneuf Named Leafs’ Captain, Barry Bonds Update, Bynum Gets Knee Drained, Hawks Pick Drew, Broncos Softening on B-West, Cowboys Re-Sign Miles Austin

NHL

– The Leafs are expected to name D Dion Phaneuf as the team’s next captain on Monday. Toronto has been playing without a captain since F Mats Sundin and the Maple Leafs parted ways after the 2007-08 season. Toronto acquired Phaneuf from Calgary in January and it wasn’t long before the Maple Leafs were impressed by his leadership skills. Phaneuf is arguably one of the top offensive defenseman in the league, but his numbers have failed to reflect that last season. He scored 12 goals and 32 points 81 games between Calgary and Toronto in 2009-10.

– According to the NY Post, the Devils top three candidates for their vacant head coaching position are former Penguins coach Michel Therrien, Devils’ legend John MacLean and Blackhawks’ assistant Mike Haviland.

– The city of Chicago estimated that two million people attended the Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup parade on Friday. That blows away the estimated half-million that watched the White Sox World Series parade in 2005 as well as any victory parade for the Bulls in the 1980′s and 90′s.

MLB

– Former OF Barry Bonds won a big legal victory Friday that could put his long-delayed perjury trial back on track. A divided three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday that prosecutors may not present positive urine samples and other vital evidence that the government says shows that the slugger knowingly used steroids.

The appeals court ruling upholds a lower court decision made in February 2009 barring federal prosecutors from showing the jury any evidence collected by Bonds’ personal trainer Greg Anderson. Bonds’ perjury trial, which was scheduled to start in March 2009, has been delayed pending the outcome of this appeal. The government could ask the appeals court to reconsider its decision, ask an 11-judge panel of the court to rehear the case or petition the U.S. Supreme Court to take up the issue. Prosecutors could also accept the decision and go to trial without the evidence or drop the case entirely.

– Joe Cowley of the Chicago-Sun Times reports that White Sox GM Ken Williams and manager Ozzie Guillen “almost came to blows in a heated shouting match” on Tuesday evening. It was all about Ozzie’s son Ozney, who slipped to the 22nd round in this week’s First-Year Player Draft. “I give my kid 50 grand just to go to school [at the University of South Florida rather than sign with the Sox]. I got 50 grand in my pocket to send my kid to go to Niketown or buy something.” According to a source, this comment led to a confrontation between the two. Stating the obvious, it appears this working relationship is getting worse by the minute, something Williams acknowledged in statements at the White Sox website. Speaking nothing of the state of the franchise, all this drama should make for great television on MLB Network.

– The Braves have placed OF Nate McLouth (concussion symptoms) on the 15-day DL. McLouth hasn’t been told whether he has a concussion, but said that he was feeling symptomatic. That was enough for the Braves to make the move.

– The Angels have signed RHP Daniel Cabrera to a minor league contract. Cabrera was given his release by the White Sox during spring training. The 29-year-old right-hander was 0-6 with a 6.00 ERA and 1.98 WHIP in nine starts and six relief appearances between the Nationals and Diamondbacks last season.

– The Dodgers have signed RHP Kiko Calero to a minor league contract. Calero was released by the Mets last month after posting a 10.59 ERA and 1.94 WHIP over 10 appearances with Triple-A Buffalo. There have been whispers about a potential injury dating back to the winter.

– The Twins have placed SS J.J. Hardy (left wrist bruise) on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 7, and have placed 2B Orlando Hudson (left wrist sprain) on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 31.

– The Red Sox have placed OF Jeremy Hermida (fractured ribs) on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 10.

– The Padres have placed OF Matt Stairs (right knee) on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 7.

– The Jays have placed SS John MacDonald on the bereavement list.

– The Cubs have placed 3B Aramis Ramirez (bruised left thumb) on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 8.

– The Brewers have placed RHP Todd Coffey (bruised right thumb) on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 30.

– The Dodgers have placed RHP Charlie Haeger (sprained big right toe) on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 6.

– The Mariners have placed DH Mike Sweeney (lower back inflammation) on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 3.

– Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that Bud Selig will will be in Kansas City on Wednesday to formally announce that the Royals will host the 2012 All-Star game. The 2011 All-Star game was already awarded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The pending announcement about the Royals was already speculated by the Kansas City Star on Friday, but Nightengale goes a step further by saying that the Mets will host the game in 2013, with the Twins hosting in 2014 and the Nationals in 2015. This additional information will not be confirmed by Selig on Wednesday, but announced on a year-to-year basis.

NBA

– Lakers’ F Andrew Bynum (right knee), who said after Thursday’s Game 4 loss that he wouldn’t have his swollen right knee drained again, gave in and let team doctors perform another procedure over night. Bynum is pulling out all the stops in hopes of playing in the last two or three games of the Finals, and it’s clear the Lakers need him badly. He’s also playing with a torn meniscus, and already had his knee drained once in preparation for the Finals, so the Lakers have to hope they’re not doing any long-term damage to his knee. Either way, it would appear now that there’s a very good chance Bynum will be available for Games 5, 6 and, if necessary, 7.

– Yahoo! is reporting that the Hawks have hired assistant coach Larry Drew to become the team’s next coach. Drew was on former coach Mike Woodson’s staff and probably cost less money than bigger names like Mark Jackson and Dwane Casey. Drew was also popular with the team’s players, which likely played a key role in his hiring. This is Drew’s first head coaching job in the NBA, so we’ll have to wait and see what kind of impact this has on players like F Josh Smith, as well as whether the move might help keep G Joe Johnson from jumping ship this summer.

– Brian Windhorst said via Twitter that Tom Izzo has told Michigan State he’ll make his announcement concerning the Cavaliers coaching job on Saturday.

– As expected, G John Wall will be the only player to work out for the Wizards, and they will select him #1 overall. Team owner Ted Leonsis said he was “not allowed” to officially declare that Washington will take Wall, but it’s a foregone conclusion. Coach Flip Saunders will let him run the offense, and said recently that Wall has the talent to “revolutionize the position.”

NFL

– The Broncos are reportedly “softening” their pursuit of free agent RB Brian Westbrook. Coach Josh McDaniels has a soft spot for team-centric savvy veterans, but Westbrook never made sense with Correll Buckhalter coming off a fine season as the passing-down back. The Rams are presumably still interested, and Redskins coach Mike Shanahan recently stated that his standing offer to Westbrook is still good.

– The Cowboys have re-signed RFA Miles Austin to a one-year/$3.168M contract. Austin is still seeking a long-term deal, and the Cowboys have made it clear that they intend to lock him up. In the the meantime, Austin has been a loyal soldier, attending all spring practices while steering clear of media attention. The Cowboys will be turning their attention to their rookie class soon, so Austin’s extension may not happen before the season starts.

– The Texans have re-signed TE Owen Daniels to a one-year/$3.168M contract. Daniels has been seeking a long-term deal for a couple of years, but since he’s coming off yet another major knee injury, the Texans are wise to make him wait. Daniels may not even be ready to participate in training camp this season. If he can stay healthy and effective for 16 games, the Texans would be wise to take care of the excellent pass-catcher.

– The Colts have re-signed FS Antoine Bethea to a four-year/$27M contract. Bethea will get $18M over the first two years of the deal. He becomes one of the disgruntled RFAs that actually gets the long-term deal he wanted. A two-time Pro Bowler, Bethea is one of the unsung rocks in Indy’s defense. Even more will be expected out of him as he enters his prime with this deal.

– The Chargers have signed WR Josh Reed, formerly of the Bills, to a one-year contract. With WR Vincent Jackson threatening an in-season holdout and also facing a possible league suspension, GM A.J. Smith isn’t waiting around. Still, there’s a reason Reed has been on the street since free agency opened. He’s a low-end slot/possession receiver with few playmaking skills. It’s also confirmation that the Chargers aren’t interested in free agent WR Terrell Owens.

– The Raiders have signed DT John Henderson to a one-year contract. Henderson’s pass rushing skills are declining but he can still stuff the run at age 31. He’s been a 4-3 lineman for his entire career and there’s little risk here thanks to the one-year deal. He could also play some end in a 3-4 if the Raiders end up shifting that way.

TNA

Former three-time TNA X-Division Champion, former six-time NWA World Tag Team Champion, & former two-time ROH World Tag Team Champion, “The Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels, was one of the special guests on Monday Night Mayhem. The highlights:

The transition from TNA to Ring of Honor over the past several months & if he ever felt he would see himself in ROH full-time once again: “I always thought Ring of Honor was a great place to wrestle, especially if you enjoy wrestling like I do. It’s usually the place where the top talent in the world goes to wrestle, so I’m thrilled to be back there again with guys like Jim Cornette & Adam Pearce heading the ship. You look at the roster they have, and just to be included in that roster, it’s really for a lack of better term an honor. The guys that are going to be on this Pay-Per-View (Death Before Dishonor VIII) are some of the best wrestlers in the world. I always hoped that I would be wrestling and holding my own with the best in the world, so yeah I’m happy to be there.”

The lowdown behind his TNA departure & if he anything publicly to say to those within the TNA organization: “I don’t really want to discuss what happened between me & TNA; that’s in the past, and I’m just gonna go wrestle where I can wrestle. I’m happy to work for a company that appreciates me being there, and right now that’s Ring of Honor, Triple A, & other companies around the world. I’m just concentrating on staying busy and trying to stay at that competitive level.”

What he feels TNA could have done differently with him creatively & how the company could have utilized his persona & character more effectively: It’s easy to look back in hindsight and say ‘They should have done this,’ or ‘I wish they could’ve done that.’ Every wrestler in the world has probably looked at whatever company they’ve been in and said ‘I could’ve been pushed better,’ but the truth of the matter is, creative teams, whether TNA, ROH, or even WWE, there’s a bigger picture that they deal with. The decisions that are made, while they may not be as beneficial to me as a single, in the end they are trying to make the whole roster move forward and be better. What could they have done different? They could have put the World Title on me, but they didn’t. They decided to do what they did, and that’s something we all have to deal with.”

What the fans can expect in his “Pick 6? Contenders Series Match vs. Kenny Omega at Death Before Dishonor VIII in Toronto: I lot of people are happy that I’m back in Ring of Honor in the sense that get a chance to see me live. Coming back after three years of being in Ring of Honor, I get the opportunity to have matches that I haven’t had before, and one for example is Kenny Omega. Kenny has done a lot of good stuff on the independents, both in Ring of Honor & PWG, as well as going overseas. There is a lot of buzz around Kenny Omega, and so, there’s a lot of anticipation for the first time ever that he & I will ever wrestle each other.

How different the ROH product is from TNA right now: “The similarities are of course that the rosters are made up with guys that are hungry for bigger & better opportunities. Being with ROH from the beginning, along with mostly being TNA from the beginning and watching both companies grow from where they were in 2002 to now. Both companies have always been that ‘little engine that could,’ and the differences are in the opportunities that come to both companies. TNA has had better opportunities & breaks in terms of their television situation, but at the same, ROH has had a little more freedom internationally and dealing with talents around the world & with other companies. TNA has tried to be its own entity. It all goes back to the talent and the talent that is hungry for trying to become bigger & better and try to make whatever company we’re talking about more successful.”

VoV TradeCentre ’10 Preview Report

VoV

–- Barring unforeseen circumstances, VoV.com will be hosting a LIVE TradeCentre ’10 day on March 3, and will also be posting more frequent updates on March 1 and 2 (pending player transaction). You’re welcome.

NHL

– While there have been two blockbuster trades F Ilya Kovalchuk and D Dion Phaneuf getting completed, it seems unlikely we’ll see anymore blockbuster deals before March 3. Wednesday may not break the record for most trades ever, but remember that this deadline is different than ever before. The long Olympic break resulted in some of the bigger trades (Kovalchuk, Phaneuf, Giguere, Barker, Cullen) moving before the Olympic freeze. Expect to see several trades announced tomorrow that were worked on during the trade freeze – teams were allowed to discuss, but rosters themselves had to freeze. Knowing that, there could be a few potential deals and signings that were worked on over the freeze that won’t become official until Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday. Based on the quality of players in play at this year’s deadline, expect Deadline Day will once again be very busy.

The Leafs have at least two offers on the table for F Alexei Ponikarvsky. TSN reports that the deals are not what GM Brian Burke is looking for, and the team is believed to be holding out unless the offers are improved. Holding out may make Poni’s return price climb, depending on who goes where and the desperation level of teams looking for a talented winger. F Lee Stempniak and F Wayne Primeau are also generating interest and likely will not remain with the blue and white past March 3.

According to the Boston Herald, the Bruins are in the running for a number of trades come deadline day. The team is shopping for an established forward, and while the Bruins are inquiring here and there, nothing is imminent. One name that has come up is Hurricanes’ F Ray Whitney, however, Whitney is unwilling to waive his NTC unless he receives an extension, something the Bruins will not do. The Kings, Penguins and Sabres have also inquired about Whitney. The Hurricanes supposedly want both a prospect and a first-round pick (or the equivalent of that) as a return. The report says to keep an eye on Ducks’ F Teemu Selanne, Leafs’ F Alexei Ponikarovsky and Thrashers’ F Slava Kozlov. Hurricanes’ D Aaron Ward, D Andrew Alberts and D Joe Corvo are UFAs at season’s end, so expect them to get moved.

The Bruins, Flyers and Coyotes are still in the running for a top-four defenceman. Expect one of these teams to land one of the ‘Canes on the trade block.

The Oilers are expected to be one of the more aggressive deadline dealers, however, the contracts of captain F Ethan Moreau, D Sheldon Souray and D Steve Staios are going to be difficult to move.  These players have value with the deadline looming, but the Oil may have to reduce their asking price to get this heavy contracts off their hands.

The Panthers are also set for a huge overhaul, and at least eight players are up for grabs – F Steven Reinprecht, F Cory Stillman, F Rostislav Olesz, F Kamil Kreps, F Nick Tarnasky, F Radek Dvorak, D Dennis Seidenberg, and last but not least, G Tomas Vokoun. TSN reports that Vokoun will not be moved yet, but if the right deal comes in, the Panthers won’t say turn it down.

Based on rumours and speculation of trades/interest from around the league, here is a list of who could be wearing another sweater by March 3. Their star rating (out of 5) indicates the likelihood of them being moved.

Senators (buyers: top-6 defenceman, top-12 forward)

Flyers (buyers: goalie, top-4 defenceman, top-9 forward) – F Jeff Carter (TOR, FLA – *1/4 – not currently being shopping, but would likely be the return price if they made a blockbuster deal), F Daniel Briere (CAL, TOR, BUF – *1/2 – rumours indicate that the Flyers would give up Briere as a salary dump with a low return price),

Coyotes (buyers: top-9 forward, top-6 defenceman) – F Peter Mueller (TOR, MTL, NYR – **1/2)

Penguins (buyers: top-6 winger, top-4 defenceman)

Lightning (N/A: top-6 defenceman)

Maple Leafs (buyers: Toronto’s first round pick belongs to Boston, so the Leafs will buy without trading any prospects. First-line centre, top prospect, draft picks) – F Alexei Ponikarovsky (PUT, BOS, LA, NAS, PHX – *****), D Tomas Kaberle (PIT, VAN, BUF, BOS, CHI, SJ – **1/2), F Lee Stempniak (BUF, PIT – ***1/2), F Wayne Primeau (N/A – ***1/2)

Leafs Dealing Kaberle, Chargers Won’t Restructure LT2, Eagles Keeping Vick, ECW Officially Shutting Down, Lashley on Steroids?, C’s Dealing Allen

NHL

– According to The Hockey News, the Leafs are preparing to deal D Tomas Kaberle. Kaberle has a no-trade clause in his contract, but it runs out this summer so Burke will either trade him now or once the summer hits. The team needed a puck-moving defenceman to replace him, and they now have that in D Dion Phaneuf. Expect the team to go after a draft pick and a young forward.

– NESN reports that the Bruins have asked about Blues’ F Keith Tkachuk. He has an expiring $2.1M deal. Supposedly, the team nearly traded for him last year when it could have sent F Phil Kessel in exchange for Tkachuk and F David Perron.

NFL

– In an interview with San Diego station XX 1090, Chargers’ RB LaDainian Tomlinson insisted Tuesday that he would not take a paycut “under any circumstances.” LT2 says he’s unhappy with changes in the organization, but he wouldn’t rule out returning to San Diego. “I can see a lot of things happening. I just kind of leave it open.” If he’s truly unwilling to restructure, his future almost certainly lies outside of San Diego.

– According to ESPN, the Colts will begin contract negotiations with QB Peyton Manning in the offseason. The new deal is expected to make the Colts’ star the highest paid player in NFL history and to keep him with the franchise for his entire career. Manning, 33, signed a contract extension for $99.2M in 2004, and the deal included a record $34.5M singing bonus, all of it paid upfront. The final two seasons of that contract were voided because Manning met predetermined playing-time incentives, making 2010 the final year of the deal. Given the salary spiral, his stature in the league, and the likelihood that 2010 will be an ‘uncapped’ season, it is not unthinkable to project that Manning could receive an extension pushing $20M per year, and with a signing bonus of about $50M.

– According to NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi, the Eagles maintain that they do not plan to deal QB Michael Vick this offseason. Per Lombardi, the Eagles believe they are “in a luxury position” at quarterback with Vick, QB Donovan McNabb and QB Kevin Kolb under contract for 2010. The Eagles are likely selling Lombardi a bill of goods, hoping to play hard to get in an attempt to raise Vick’s trade value. We can’t see Philly paying Vick $5.25M to be the third QB in 2010. The most likely scenario remains a trade or a release in March.

– Texans’ coach Gary Kubiak revealed in an interview with The Score 1510 in Denver that RB Steve Slaton underwent surgery to repair nerve damage in his neck in mid-January. Kubiak believes the nerve issue may have been at the root of Slaton’s fumbling problems last season. Beat writer John McClain has reported that the injury is not career-threatening, and Slaton is expected to eventually get back to 100%. The surgery, however, makes it even less likely that he’ll be counted on for the featured back role in 2010.

WWE

– It’s official – the ECW brand is shutting down for good in 3 weeks. The final ECW broadcast will air on Tuesday, 2/23. Vince McMahon appeared on this week’s ECW on SyFy broadcast to make the announcement, thanking the superstars and crew who made ECW the success it once was. McMahon promised a “new, innovative, never before seen program broadcast” that will debut on 3/2 and take over the old ECW timeslot. There are reports that the new brand will be dubbed WWE Next Generation (“NXT”) and will feature almost exclusively young talent from WWE’s developmental system. It’s currently unknown what will happen with ECW Champion Christian, as well as the already-developed ECW stars. More on the end of ECW and the start of WWE NXT later this week.

– The 2/1 edition of WWE Raw hosted by William Shatner drew a 3.63 cable rating with an average of 5.29 million viewers for the two hour broadcast. The hourly numbers were 3.5 and 3.76.

MMA

– Strikeforce MMA fighter Wes Sims, who got wrecked last weekend by Bobby Lashley, is accusing the TNA star of “juicing up and cheating” in an interview with Yahoo! Sports. Sims told Yahoo:

“He needs to go back to being a security guard because he ain’t got the mic skills to be a pro wrestler. He should go back to being a security guard because he ain’t got the MMA skills.”

Sims also claims that some of his pro wrestler friends have confirmed to him that Lashley uses performance enhancing drugs.

“He’s juiced. We did not have a drug test and his own wrestlers threw him under the bus. I’m good friends with a lot of wrestlers… I just know several wrestlers who have talked to me, sent me texts.”

NBA

– Yahoo! Sports reports that the Celtics are willing to trade G Ray Allen. The Celts reportedly want a younger guard who cost less cash and an expiring contract so they have some money to play with this summer. Allen will be a UFA at season’s end. The Heat and Knicks are interested.

– According to ESPN, suspended Wizards’ G Javaris Crittenton might be dealt before the NBA’s February 18 trade deadline and end up playing some hoop in Europe or elsewhere. He has an expiring $1.48M deal.

MLB

– The Blue Jays have signed RHP Kevin Gregg to a one-year/$2.75M deal. The deal includes two options that could make the deal worth close to $12M. He’ll be competing for the closer’s role alongside RHP Jason Frasor and LHP Scott Downs. Gregg, 31, compiled a 4.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 23 saves in 30 opportunities with the Cubs last season.

– Giants’ ace RHP Tim Lincecum is likely headed to an arbitration hearing with the Giants in order to determine his 2010 salary. Lincecum asked for $13M and was offered $8M when arbitration figures were exchanged two weeks ago. Little progress has been made toward a compromise. Hisagent Rick Thurman said, “I think that’s the direction (a hearing) they’ve wanted this to go from Day 1, simply because there’s been little or no discussions with regards to a contract.”

– Former Padres’ OF Brian Giles’ agent is saying that there are “8-10 teams” interested in his client. The 39-year-old only hit .191 last year in the 61 games he was limited to due to a knee injury. He has a 15-year career average of .291 and has hit 287 homers over that time, though only two of them last year. His agent is saying that he’ll make a deal before week’s end. If the knee still gives him issues in spring training, the rumour is that Giles will then go ahead and retire.

– The Phillies, Mets, Astros, Rangers and Red Sox are interested in LHP Noah Lowry.

– ESPN reports that the Dodgers have made a one-year offer to 3B Russell Branyan. The Indians have also expressed interest.

– The Dodgers have signed OF Reed Johnson to a one-year deal.

– RHP Byung-Hyun Kim has ended his retirement and signed with the Giants.

***BREAKING NEWS*** Leafs Acquire Dion Phaneuf and J.S. Giguere

NHL

The Leafs have acquired D Dion Phaneuf, F Fredrik Sjostrom and D Keith Aulie from the Flames in exchange for F Matt Stajan, D Ian White, F Niklas Hagman and F Jamal Mayers. Mayers had asked the Leafs to move him. Phaneuf makes 7M next season with a cap hit of $6.5M that runs through the 2013-14 season. Sjostrom makes $750K. CBC reports that Phaneuf was asked to waive his no-trade clause for the Leafs earlier this year, and he turned it down. Steve Simmons reports that the Leafs were willing to take F Olli Jokinen’s contract, but the Flames said no.

The Leafs have officially acquired G J.S. Giguere and from the Ducks in exchange for G Vesa Toskala and F Jason Blake. Giguere has waived his no-trade clause. Dead salary for dead salary, no first-round picks involved.

Leafs gain $2M in cap relief in the Ducks deal, but take on additional $2M in salary for next season.

Part one of Burke’s playoffs-in-2010 plan may be done for today, but the moves have not yet finished, as the Leafs are still searching for offensive help. Early rumours indicate a potential package deal involving D Tomas Kaberle and F Alex Ponikarovsky. Poni was previously linked to the Penguins. It seems possible the next part of this plan is to take on cap space from other teams in order to get prospects and picks. Next the Leafs can send players to the minors to save cap space. The Leafs could take on cap space from the Kings, Rangers and Flyers depending on who needs space for Thrashers’ F Ilya Kovalchuk this coming week.

Expect Burke to use the cap space saved here to make a deal with another team taking on cap space and a prospect. Stay tuned.

Brett Favre Re-Retiring?, Suns Dealing Amare, Frontrunners for Kovalchuk, The Rock vs. John Cena, Thome Back to White Sox?, AJ Styles Bashes WWE

NBA

– According to Yahoo! Sports, the Suns are actively seeking a trade for F Amare Stoudemire. The Bulls, Heat, 76ers, Nets and Pistons are among multiple teams that have a strong interest in Stoudemire, while the Warriors and Cavaliers have also inquired. Stoudemire is able to opt out of the final $17.7M season of his contract, allowing him to become a UFA. As they did when shopping Stoudemire last season, the Suns want a combination of young talent, salary-cap relief and draft picks for him.

Stoudemire has been inclined to use Lakerds F Pau Gasol’s three-year/$57M contract extension as a parameter for negotiations, and many believe that circumstances will result in Stoudemire getting the max, or close to it. The trade deadline is February 18. Stay tuned.

– The Sacramento Bee reports that, despite not wanting to be moved, the 76ers have F Samuel Dalembert on the trade block. Dalembert has two-years/$24.9M remaining.

– The NY Post reports that the Knicks are still eyeing Wolves G Ricky Rubio.

– The Wolves are eyeing soon-to-be free agent F Rudy Gay, F Luol Deng and F Caron Butler.

NHL

– The Capitals and Flames are rumoured to be in the frontrunning to land Thrashers F Ilya Kovalchuk. D Dion Phaneuf is believed to be the big name heading back from Calgary. The Blackhawks, Bruins, Kings and Rangers are also very much in the mix. Stay tuned.

WWE

– During an interview with Live Audio Wrestling last night, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said he would return to WWE for a guest-hosting role or to wrestle a match on the sole condition that he can “rip up” the writing for the current television product and tap into the “Attitude Era” with an edgier product.

“I want to use the platform as a host to literally rip things open. There’s so much stuff we can do. We’re going to create an incredible show, an incredible Raw. I’m doing another movie, but after that, we’re going to create something special, unique, something badass for the fans. Talking to Vince (McMahon), whenever that’s going to be, we’re going to have a great time.”

Johnson echoed what he said last week during an interview with ESPN in that he wouldn’t rule out actually wrestling, but only if he can turn the product upside down and create a compelling storyline leading to a match.

“I accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish in wrestling, so I wouldn’t rule out going back. If the match was right and we could create something really unique and cool for the fans and for my opponent and for the company, I would do it in a second.”

Johnson once again said he has no interest in wrestling John Cena, but talked about what it would take for him to work a program with one of WWE’s premiere stars.

“I’ve never been interested in wrestling John Cena. The guys I wrestled in the past – from Goldberg to Hogan to Austin – were guys who I’ve really wanted to wrestle. If it can be done creatively but not only that, it’s very important if I do back is that the writing has to be ripped open and really be pushed. I came from a time in the Attitude Era where we trail-blazed a lot and were fearless in the things we said and did.”

– WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his JRsBarBQ.com blog, here are some highlights:

Vince Russo Complaining about Wrestling Journalists: “I do think that creative types in today’s wrestling world are under tremendous pressure and scrutiny. I have great compassion for what they do particularly in today’s society. Fans of all broadcast genres are harder to please these days because of all the info flow available but people can only do their best and follow their instincts. I still think the keys to the process is listening to the objective critiques of the consumers and to follow rating trends. But it all will come back to one’s natural instincts on how they see the genre presented. I know what I personally like in a wrestling TV show but that certainly doesn’t mean that others might like the direction that I might take. Hell, I might not like it after I saw it air.

Ludwig Borga’s Death: “Been reading a little about the death of Tony Halme aka Ludvig Borga and, including his concealed SS tattoo on his calf I won’t speak at length about those that have passed away but Tony obviously had issues and was not a great guy to be around. Perhaps others have a different view of this man but I personally found him to be somewhat obnoxious and he could be a bully if allowed to be such. Guys like Halme don’t mix well in any locker room and need to be removed from the “team” sooner than later. Nonetheless I still feel badly about the last years of Tony’s life as things really unraveled for him seemingly due to alcohol and drug issues. When one competes with “demons” unfortunately the “demons” usually win unless one is personally and throughly committed to changing one’s behavior. Wrestlers with problems of this nature either need to have the problem solved, which takes everyone’s best efforts specifically the individual himself, or have the problem person needs to be eliminated from the equation. That might sound harsh but some folks would rather “catch a buzz” than do the right thing for themselves, their family and the company for which they work.”

A post-mortem has confirmed that former WWE performer Tony Halme (a/k/a Ludvig Borga) took his own life via pistol. Police discovered his body on Jan. 10 in his Helsinki, Finland, apartment.

MLB

– According to the Chicago Tribune, the White Sox are split down the middle in regards to whether they’d like DH Jim Thome to return to the team. The Twins are believed to be the frontrunners, with the Rays and Tigers still interested.

– The Angels have re-signed SS Maicer Izturis to a three-year/$10M deal. The deal provides the versatile Izturis with a $500K signing bonus, a $2.6M salary this year, $3.1M in 2011 and $3.8M in 2012. He batted .300/.359/.434 with eight homers, 65 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 387 at-bats last season and will serve as a utility infielder in 2010.

– Free agent RHP Ben Sheets is seeking a guaranteed salary of $8M in 2010, according to SI.com’s Jon Heyman. Sheets is currently being wooed by the A’s, Rangers and Mets, amongst others. Interest in the righty has amped up since he put on a show last week in Louisiana, hitting 91 MPH with his fastball and the low-70s with his curve. The 31-year-old righty missed all of 2009 due to elbow surgery but he carries a 3.72 career ERA and 1.20 career WHIP.

– The Royals have officially signed OF Rick Ankiel to a one-year/$3.25M contract with a $6M mutual option for 2011. Ankiel, 30, batted just .231/.285/.387 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI with the Cardinals last season. Coincidence or not, his production flatlined after he crashed into the center field fence last May. He’ll be provided with a  chance to get back on his feet in KC, but the whether he can actually be a productive everyday player in the major leagues is up in the air.

– The Brewers have re-signed RHP Dave Bush to a one-year/$4.215M deal.

– 2B Mark Loretta  Pahas announced his retirement as a player and has been hired by the Padres as special assistant to baseball operations.

– The Astros have signed LHP Tim Byrdak to a one-year/$1.6M deal.

NFL

– QB Brett Favre told ESPN’s Ed Werder that it’s “highly unlikely” he’ll play again. This doesn’t mean that much, especially a day after a brutal NFC Championship Game loss in which he took numerous big hits. Favre put together the best statistical season of his career in 2009 and the Vikings will remain largely intact next year. Let the discussion begin…again…

– A Monday MRI revealed that Vikings CB Cedric Griffin suffered a torn ACL in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game loss. While it’s good news that Griffin’s MCL isn’t torn as initially feared, a knee reconstruction is all but certain to sideline him for the start of next season. Griffin put together a career-best year in ’09, picking off four passes and forcing three fumbles.

– Despite entering the last year of his contract, Patriots QB Tom Brady didn’t express urgency about getting an extension when asked about the situation Monday. Brady is entering the last year on his contract. The 2009 Comeback Player of the Year downplayed his desire for a new deal, saying “We are all overpaid.” Extending Brady still figures to be a priority for the Patriots after free agency and the draft. Brady also confirmed that he won’t need any kind of surgery this offseason after battling through injuries down the stretch.

– Cardinals beat writer Kent Somers considers free agent ILB Karlos Dansby “likely” to leave the Cardinals this offseason. Dansby can get more on the open market than he could from the Cards, and Somers says the team won’t franchise tag him for a third straight year. There aren’t many teams in the league that couldn’t use a player like Dansby, no matter the scheme they run. He’ll be the top free agent linebacker available.

– According to Ravens beat writer Mike Preston, 2009 was “likely” RB Willis McGahee’s last season in Baltimore. If so, McGahee went out on a high note. His 5.0 YPC average and 14 all-purpose TDs were both career bests. The Ravens may ask McGahee to take a pay cut, but he’d be smart to refuse. He’ll be the most sought-after tailback on the UFA market this spring.

– Vikings NT Pat Williams says he is “50/50″ to retire this offseason. “I feel good (physically). But yesterday was tough on me. It was draining. I see how Brett (Favre) felt.” Williams, still an effective run plugger at age 37, finished the season with 44 tackles, two sacks, and two fumbles forced. He can earn $4.25M in base salary by returning for 2010.

– Club spokesman John Herrera said Monday that the Raiders still have not decided the fate of head coach Tom Cable. That said, it’s all but certain that Cable is coming back, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported three days ago. Herrera, though, said Monday that Davis and Cable are meeting “regularly” to discuss the future, just a day after claiming the Raiders never gave any indication Cable’s job was in danger. Oakland’s offensive coordinator job remains vacant.

TNA

– In an interview with The Sun, TNA World Heavyweight Champion AJ Styles blasts the backstabbing nature of rival promotion WWE.

The TNA star said he has no interest in going to WWE based on second-hand stories he’s heard from wrestlers’ experiences in the politically-motivated backstage environment.

“From all the horror stories I’ve heard in WWE, there’s no reason why I would want to go anywhere else. Desmond (Wolfe) and I are going to work together to make this company the best for everybody. Where, in the other company, they will stab each other in the back to get to the next level. It’s not about me. It’s about us in TNA.”

Styles said one year from now, TNA needs to be live and touring “week-to-week” outside the Impact Zone in Orlando. His main reason for wanting to venture outside of Orlando is so he can better gauge the effectiveness of his persona.

“Definitely live. Live every Monday night or Thursday night. I don’t care. Just as long as the fans know when it’s coming on. And that they don’t know what to expect. That’s the biggest thing because with the spoilers, they go on (the Internet) and figure out whatever, but I want to be live going from state-to-state and not just in the Impact Zone.”

Styles added: “It’s hard to gauge who you are as a character in the Impact Zone because you have the same fans coming in who don’t necessarily want to enjoy the show, but be part of the show, and it’s hard to gauge how you’re doing as an entertainer.”

Styles also reassured fans upset about TNA parting ways with its trademark six-sided ring.

“Ring change is kind of upsetting at first, but then once you get in that ring, it brings the memories back – ‘Oh, there’s so much more you can do.’ But, for us, it absolutely does not make a difference to me. That’s why it was so bizarre to me at first why they would change it. I heard that maybe the reason was to be taken more seriously as a company. I can understand that. I don’t care what it is that gets us to the next level as long as we get there.”

*HUGE* Update on Dion Phaneuf Trade Rumours, Rangers Ink Vladdy, Piniero to Mets, Million Dollar Man to WWE HOF?, More TNA Surprises

NHL

– According to sources, the Flames and D Dion Phaneuf, regardless of both sides denying it, are still seeking trade options. Phaneuf has reportedly been causing problems in the locker room, but with the Flames fighting for conference placing/the division lead and home ice advantage in the playoffs, neither side is going to admit to these problems. A source close to me names the Devils and Senators as possible trade suitors.

The Sens appear most interested, but also have the least to give. Last season’s rumour involving Phaneuf and F Jason Spezza is no longer realistic. As for the Devils, Phaneuf’s playing style would fit well into their defensive system, however, one would think that the Devils would need to send F David Clarkson or F Niclas Bergfors, making it very unlikely the Devils would pull the trigger.

ESPN reports that the Flyers are interested, with F Jeff Carter’s name being mentioned. The Lightning have also been named as suitors, with F Vincent Lecavalier, as always, being mentioned. In order to acquire him, though, the Flames would need to deal a big contract such as Phaneuf’s or F Olli Jokinen’s.

A source close to me says that a Phaneu deal is 60/40 by the March 4 trade deadline. Stay tuned.

– Bruins F Marc Savard (MCL) will miss next three-to-four weeks. His MRI revealed a Grade 2 partial MCL tear in his right knee, but he will not need surgery.

– Senators F Daniel Alfredsson (shoulder) will be out another week. It was originally thought that his injury would keep him sidelined until February, but the Senators’ captain appears to be healing ahead of schedule.

MLB

– According to MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan, the Rangers have signed OF Vladimir Guerrero to a one-year deal with an option for 2011. The team took Vladdy over OF Jermaine Dye. Guerrero may see sporadic outfield duty, particularly in NL parks, but he’ll be the Rangers’ primary DH.

– MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez reports the Mets are only willing to give RHP Joel Pineiro a contract in the neighborhood of Nationals RHP Jason Marquis’ most recent deal. Marquis received two years/$15M from the Nats, a reasonable amount for Pineiro. He’s seeking a three-year/$30M deal but will have to move off that number to sign anywhere, not just New York. Expect Pineiro to wind up with the Mets.

WWE

– According to the PWInsider, the latest rumoured name for induction into this year’s WWE Hall of Fame class is none other than “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, however, nothing of yet has been confirmed.

– ECW General Manager Tiffany (Taryn Terrell) and Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre (Drew Galloway) are officially engaged, reports PWInsider.com. Terrell and Galloway plan to wed in May.

– WWE has released developmental wrestlers José Torres (a.k.a. Black Pain) and Dylan Klein.

MMA

– TNA wrestler Bobby Lashley says he is signed for the Strikeforce promotion’s April fight card that will be airing on CBS. An opponent has not been named yet for Lashley’s national TV MMA debut.

Lashley just signed to fight Yohan Banks at Strikeforce Miami on 1/30 (airing on Showtime) and says his goal is to fight six times this year for Strikeforce. Lashley told Heavy.com:

“We’re going to do the fight on the 30th in Miami, and then turn around and do the April 19th fight on CBS. I told them I wanted to stay active. If they want to give me six fights this year, I’ll take six fights this year. I need more fights under my belt so that when that big fight comes, I’m ready for it.”

Lashley said he signed with Strikeforce so he could eventually get “that big fight” against Fedor Emelianenko, arguably the top MMA fighter in the world. At 6 fights a year, he’ll certainly have a chance to rack up a few wins and prove himself worthy for a shot at the Last Emperor.

TNA

– Jeremy Borash said this morning during an appearance on the Pain Clinic radio show that TNA is expected to debut a big-name wrestler at the Genesis PPV, which takes place on January 17. He indicated it would be a “big surprise.” Stay tuned. So…Val Venis is back?

– Hulk Hogan’s TNA entrance theme is actually not a new song as it can be heard on the WCW Nitro and WCW/nWo Thunder video games released on Playstation in the late nineties. At the time, a sound-alike was created because THQ didn’t own the rights to the actual New World Order song. Wow, TNA not doing something original!? I don’t believe it!

NFL

– According to SI.com’s Jim Trotter, Vikings defense coordinator Leslie Frazier is the clubhouse leader for the Bills head coaching job. Frazier reportedly “blew away” new Bills GM Buddy Nix in his interview. He uses the same defense that Perry Fewell ran, so he wouldn’t need a major change. Trotter also reports that Frazier will still interview in Seattle because Pete Carroll has not been promised full control of the Seahawks.

*HUGE* Update on John Morrison’s WWE Future – Leaving for TNA?, Cardinals Locking Pujols Long-Term, Guerrero Unhappy, Flames Shopping Phaneuf?

TNA

– According to the Bleacher Report, Joey Mercury was set to sign with TNA, but has failed his physical with the early conception that his knees were unable to hold up. While this isn’t big news in itself, it was believed that if Mercury did sign in TNA, WWE superstar John Morrison would be the next to jump ship. Morrison has given his notice to the WWE that he will give them up to four weeks before his WWE contract ends to give him a World Title – failure to do so will see him walk away from the company.

Early rumours indicate that WWE is planning on having Morrison either win the Royal Rumble on January 31, or to win the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 26, and then cash it in on the same night to win one of the world titles. If the MITB route is taken, Morrison is expected to cash in on WWE Champion Sheamus, who will hold the title into ‘Mania. If WWE chooses the Royal Rumble route for Morrison, he is expected to choose Batista and his (eventual) World Heavyweight Championship, as plans suggest that he will have the title by the time WrestleMania 26 rolls around. Which, obviously, means that The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak match will be a non-title bout.

While Mercury will not be joining TNA, Morrison could still potentially jump to TNA, especially if his World Title ultimatum is not met. WWE can’t afford to lose him, as Morrison is probably the brightest star they have, and is undoubtedly the future of the WWE. He’s yet to get in a main event storyline on SmackDown, so his frustration is valid. Stay tuned.

– Spike TV senior VP Brian Diamond commented to TheSteelCage.net on the possibility of TNA Impact moving to Monday nights.

“It’s a consideration. Obviously the results of Monday were extremely encouraging for us to take that under advisement. It’s something that we’ll look at. At what point we do it or in what manner we do it remains to be seen, but it’s definitely something we’re taking more seriously than we did, say a year ago.

Diamond says that TNA has been improving the production values of iMPACT! in recent months and now has many of the key pieces in place to make some moves.

“I think all the right ingredients are there right now. The right players, the right talent, the right production personnel. From a production standpoint, going to HD in October really boosted the look and the feel of TNA Wrestling. Now, between production, talent and the people behind the scenes, it’s a great recipe for a great TV meal. But (moving to Monday’s) is something we’re looking at very closely. We haven’t made any big decisions yet but it’s something we’re considering.”

MLB

– MLB.com reports that the Cardinals are looking to lock up 1B Albert Pujols to another long-term deal before the off-season ends. Pujols isn’t a free agent for another two seasons, but the team wants it to be extra clear that it wants Pujols to remain in the lineup for a long, long time. The team certainly doesn’t want to push at Pujols to sign. “I think the pace will be dictated somewhat by how he feels about it, how he sees things shaping up, and his representatives,” said the team’s principal owner, Bill DeWitt Jr. The Cards may add a third baseman, a fifth starter, or some bullpen help before the season gets underway.

– MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan reports that free agent OF Vladimir Guerrero “wasn’t particularly happy” with the Rangers’ recent offer to him, which has been rumoured as between $5-7M. Vlad has 407 career home runs and an impressive .954 career OPS, but he turns 35 in February and hit just .295/.334/.460 last season. In this market, and with his recent injury history, Guerrero may want to take the Rangers’ offer and run with it. Angels DH Hideki Matsui had much better numbers in 2009 and landed just a one-year/$6.5M deal last month.

– Free agent RHP Jose Valverde is asking clubs for $8M annually, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney. And with four teams interested, he may actually get it. Valverde, 31, posted a 2.33 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and converted 25 saves in 29 opportunities for Houston last season. The Diamondbacks and Tigers are thought to have interest in adding him and would immediately hand him closing duties.

– Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has told his Japanese counterpart that he is open to games between the World Series and Japan Series champions, but no steps have been taken for such a matchup. Selig met this week with Japanese commissioner Ryozo Kato in Milwaukee. Officials of MLB and the players’ association said Thursday there had been no discussion of such a plan. An agreement between management and the union would be necessary. “I was surprised, Mr. Selig said he wants to realize the plan before his tenure ends,” Kato was quoted as saying by Nikkansports. Selig is scheduled to retire in 2012 and says he won’t extend his term, but many baseball officials think he will stay on longer.

– Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Royals have reached a preliminary agreement with OF Scott Podsednik. As Crasnick notes, Podsednik had been discussing one and even two-year deals with clubs this winter. Let’s hope, for KC fans, that his contract with the Royals is only for one year and worth just around $1M. The 33-year-old outfielder had a nice comeback season in 2009 but he’s not the answer. The Royals also officially announced the signing of LHP Noel Arguelles to a five-year deal.

NHL

– Flames GM Calgary GM Darryl Sutter has denied that he is trying to trade D Dion Phaneuf. The rumours started when Phaneuf and Calgary coach Brent Sutter had a behind-the-door argument last month. “Everything is false. Whoever makes up that stuff is not doing anything. We’ve worked really hard at building a top young defense in the league and our intention is to keep them, so that’s (rumours) just from somebody who didn’t have anything to do on that day.” Rumours suggested a swap to the Thrashers for F Ilya Kovalchuk or to the Lightning for F Vincent Lecavalier. Phaneuf did, however, recently have a loud disagreement with the Brent Sutter that was overheard by a few people, which is how this all supposedly got started. The Flames continue to look for a winger for F Jarome Iginla.

– According to Damien Cristodero of the Times in Tampa, Lightning D Lukas Krajicek’s time in Tampa is over. According to the report, Krajicek was sent down with no intentions of him being placed on re-entry waivers. There has been interest in Krajicek and there have been offers made, but all of them involved another player, which the Bolts are apparently not interested in. GM Brian Lawton is confident a deal can be completed soon after the trade freeze expires.

WWE

– As previously reported, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson turned down an offer from WWE to host the January 11 edition of RAW due to a scheduling conflict. Johnson will be in Mexico next week promoting his new movie, “The Tooth Fairy.” There are still hopes within WWE that he’ll come in to host some time before WrestleMania 26.

While he has been using The Rock name in advertising for the movie, he said it’s not because he’s going back to the name but because there is a line in the movie trailers that says, “Get ready to be rocked” and they are using The Rock name as a pun. Johnson says it doesn’t matter to him one way or the other if The Rock name is used. He will be appearing on several shows over the next few weeks to promote Tooth Fairy including Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel, David Letterman, Good Morning America, Today, Regis & Kelly, ESPN, BET and the NFL Network.

– Bryan Danielson has finally reported to FCW. Danielson wrestled a dark match before Monday’s RAW from Dayton, Ohio, reportedly felt some ring rust and wants to sharpen up his timing before moving onto RAW, SmackDown or ECW.

NBA

– The Newark Star-Ledger reports that the Nets will be looking for a new head coach this offseason, with current head coach Kiki Vandeweghe not being among those candidates. The team is also exepcted to have a major facelift this offseason. President Rod Thorn said, “We’re still going to have a large number of young guys next year no matter what happens in free agency. So undoubtedly the next coach has to be good at working with young people, because he’s going to have to bring out the best in those people.”

– The Boston Globe reports that the Celtics are looking to sign a veteran guard. The team waived G Lester Hudson after failed attempts to trade him.

***BREAKING NEWS*** Heatley Nixes Trade to Rangers, Habs Acquire Gomez, Flames Sign Bouwmeester, Much More!

NHL

– The Oilers are officially unsuccessful in acquiring F Dany Heatley from the Sens for F Andrew Cogliano, F Dustin Penner and F Ladislav Smid. As of this morning, Heatley has exercised his full no-trade clause, keeping him in Ottawa for the time being. Heatley demanded a trade out of Ottawa earlier in the month as he was upset with Ottawa coach Cory Clouston as his ice time was cut significantly. I find it amazing that a player demands a trade, and then refuses to go when the team accommodates him. The Senators should call him out and not trade him at all, that should set him straight. If he refuses to report to training camp the Senators should suspend him and let him sit, even if he has scored 50 goals twice in his NHL career.

The other team in the mix for Heatley was the Rangers. The Sens were trying to pry D Marc Staal away from the Rangers, but NY was unwilling to part with him.

– Canuck GM Mike Gillis has left a serious offer on the table for the Sedin twins to mull over. Gillis travelled to the twins’ home in Sweden to present what is believed to be a five-year offer to both Daniel and Henrik. It might be Vancouver’s last attempt to ink the brothers to long-term deals preventing them from becoming unrestricted free agents on Wednesday. The twins’ agent JP Barry certainly feels that it is a serious offer worth consideration. Stay tuned for further developments.

– The Flames have signed D Jay Bouwmeester to a five-year/$33.4M deal. The contract is worth $6.68M per season. This is a significant signing by the Flames as Bouwmeester will team with D Dion Phaneuf to provide Calgary with a dynamic duo on the blueline. Needless to say, GM Darryl Sutter is very pleased. “Jay is one of the most complete defenseman in the game, and we are very pleased to have reached an agreement that will make him an important component of the Calgary Flames success. We identified Jay as the priority player where we were going to focus our money. We wanted an opportunity a few days in advance of the deadline, and that’s why we made the move we did this past weekend.” Bouwmeester also seemed very happy to playing in his home province of Alberta. We are confident that he will at least duplicate his 42-point performance of last season.

– The Canadiens have acquired F Scott Gomez, D Tom Busto and F Tom Pyatt from the Rangers for F Chris Higgins, D Doug Janik, D Ryan McDonagh and D Pavel Valentenko.

Ultimately, the Habs get a top-6 forward that they wanted. The Rangers free up a ton of cap room, likely to be used in an offer for Sens F Dany Heatley. This all but ends any chance of the Sedins coming to Montreal, so you can scratch them off your list. For those wondering, the Habs have not offered F Saku Koivu or F Alex Tanguay a contract. They have made last-chance offers on D Mike Komisarek and F Alexei Kovalev, with Komisarek already announcing he will test the open market.

– F Marian Hossa will become an unrestricted free agent after apparently turning down a 10-year contract offer from the Detroit Red Wings. Hossa will be able to command upwards of $7M per season on a new contract in free agency, while the Red Wings were offering $6M per season at most, on a long-term deal.

– The Stars have re-signed F Jere Lehtinen to a one-year contract for the 2009-10 season. The deal includes a $1.5M base salary, and as much as $1M more in incentives.

– The agent for G Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson says his client will not make a decision on which team he’ll sign with until sometime after July 1. A decision was originally expected by today. The Leafs, Sharks, Avalanche and Stars are believed to be the teams in contention.

– Steve Bartlett, the agent for Hurricanes F Erik Cole, has told the team that his client will become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday. Cole could still re-sign with the Hurricanes, but wants to see what else is out there. Stay tuned.

– If unsuccessful in re-signing the Sedin twins, the Canucks will make an offer to F Mike Cammalleri.

– According to the Edmonton Sun, the Oilers have made a contract offer to G Dwayne Roloson. It is reported to be a one-year deal for about $3M. Roloson was 28-24-9 with a 2.77 GAA last season. Meanwhile, F Ales Kotalik has not received an offer from Tambellini and it looks like he will become an unrestricted free agent.

– The Habs are expected to make a hard push for F Marian Hossa, F Marian Gaborik or F Martin Havlat.

– F Chris Neil has turned down the Senators’ offer of $1.7M per year and will likely go to free agency unless there are further developments. Neil, 30, tied a career-low with ten points and set a career-low with a minus-13 in 60 games last season.

MLB

– The Yankees have acquired former AL Rookie of the Year OF Eric Hinske from the Pirates for a pair of minor leaguers. The 31-year-old Hinske hit .255 in 106 at-bats this season with nine doubles, one homer and 11 RBIs, playing right field, first base and third base. He was 8 for 24 as a pinch hitter and said to be unhappy with a lack of playing time.

– Mariners 3B Adrian Beltre is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday to remove bone spurs in his right shoulder. Beltre is expected to miss up to eight weeks once he goes under the knife. He decided to undergo the surgery after a meeting with team physicians last week. He won’t return in time for the July 31 trade deadline.

– The Red Sox have placed 3B Mike Lowell (hip) on the 15-day DL.

– A second opinion on the injured knee of Mets OF Carlos Beltran reportedly remains a bone bruise. Beltran visited noted surgeon Dr. Richard Steadman in Colorado on Monday and the New York Daily News is reporting that the doctor agrees with the initial diagnosis by the Mets. There was speculation that the injury could have been more serious, possibly a microfracture that would have required surgery.

NBA

– Lakers F Kobe Bryant has decided not to exercise an early termination option in his contract and will rmain in L.A. for the 2009-2010 season. Bryant, who will make $23M next season, also has a player option to opt out of his contract next summer. According to ESPN.com, the Lakers intend to talk to Bryant this summer about signing a long-term extension.

– Jazz F Carlos Boozer has opted to remain with the Jazz. He will make $12.7M next season. The Jazz haven’t heard from F Mehmet Okur yet, though Okur’s agent said he is “leaning toward” opting out. Boozer’s decision limits Utah’s financial flexibility and could make it harder to match any offers for restricted FA F Paul Millsap – losing Millsap this summer and Boozer next summer has to be a worst-case scenario for the Jazz.

– The Pistons have fired head coach Michael Curry after a 39-43 season.

Yahoo! Sports is reporting that free agents G Ben Gordon and G Charlie Villanueva flew to Detroit to meet with Joe Dumars on Wednesday. Indications are that both players are going to sign with the Pistons, and you have to wonder if Dumars fired coach Michael Curry on Tuesday in an effort to make his team more desirable to the pair. Nothing has been finalized, but it looks like both players will be Pistons next season. I’m unsure how shooting guards Gordon and Rip Hamilton are going to play together, unless Detroit plans on using Gordon as the sixth man.

ESPN‘s Marc Stein is reporting that the Celtics may be the most likely destination for free agent F Rasheed Wallace. F Kevin Garnett got into the ear of Danny Ainge and the Celtics are now a very possible destination for ‘Sheed. The Magic, Spurs and Mavs are also likely to make a move for Wallace.

– F Anderson Varejao opted out of the final year of his contract on Tuesday, making him an unrestricted free agent. Varejao would have made $6.2M next season, which sets a pretty high bar for his salary expectations. The Cavs want to keep Varejao, whose ability to defend the pick-and-roll and knock down jumpshots could be more important than ever with F Shaquille O’Neal in Cleveland. The Pistons, Thunder and Grizzlies are also in a position to lure away Varejao with a big contract.

– Warriors F Corey Maggette had surgery to relieve pain in his right wrist on Monday, but he is expected to return to normal basketball activities in about one month. The Warriors said Maggette’s surgery will require “minimal rehabilitation”, and he should be 100% by the time training camp rolls around.

– F Ron Artest’s agent said on Tuesday that Yao Ming’s uncertain condition hasn’t changed Artest’s desire to re-sign with the Rockets. The Rockets are one of a handful of teams in a position to offer Artest more than the mid-level exception. Houston might not want to give Artest the contract he’s after, however, preferring to rebuild now that Yao’s career is in jeopardy and F Tracy McGrady is an afterthought.

– G Stephon Marbury told the New York Post Wednesday that NBA stars should avoid playing for the Knicks. He said, “I wouldn’t want to play in that system. That system can’t win championships. You can’t win championships if you don’t talk about defense. In Boston, the coaches even play defense.” Marbury also spoke about the mental anguish that resulted from the way he was treated by the team, but we doubt his comments will have too much of an impact on prospective Knicks.

– A judge sentenced Nuggets G JR Smith to 90 days in jail Tuesday night for causing an auto accident that killed his friend, though Smith will likely end up serving only 30.

WWE

– According to the PWTorch, the word going around the WWE locker room is that Vickie Guerrero was only being paid $500 per appearance, and on top of that she had to cover her own hotel expenses. There are some wrestlers who are understandably fired up over the rumor, feeling that the company could have done more to take care of the now-former RAW and SmackDown! GM.

Although, it is worth noting that WWE paid for Eddie Guerrero’s funeral, and friends suspect they did more to help out the family. So while the $500 per appearance rate looks horrible on the surface, the company may have quietly done more for Vickie and her children than the locker room is aware of.

– The following matches have been announced for the WWE “Night of Champions” PPV, which takes place July 26 in Philadelphia, Pa.; Randy Orton vs. Triple H vs. John Cena in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Title; Edge and Chris Jericho vs. Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase for the Unified Tag Titles; Maryse vs. Mickie James for the WWE Women’s Title.

– There was some confusion backstage over the “trade” storyline on RAW last night, and several wrestlers had trouble with the logic of how it played out on TV. PWInsider.com reports that the decision to switch the talent was made in the last week or so. The moves were done by WWE to make RAW and SmackDown! stronger. Tommy Dreamer was originally scheduled to lose the ECW title at The Bash to Jack Swagger, but this changed due to the last-minute decision to move Swagger to RAW.

NFL

– During an October, 2007 arrest for suspicion of DUI, Broncos RB Brandon Marshall told police that he hoped to get traded out of Denver. “I hate Denver. I hope I get traded. I hate this [expletive] city,” said Marshall according to an officer’s report. Reasons given for his recent trade request include concerns about direction of the team, mistrust of the Broncos medical staff and a desire for a new contract. It’s now clear, however, that Marshall’s issues are deep-seated and go back at least 18 months to the Mike Shanahan regime. Though the Broncos intend to stand firm, there’s no resolution in sight.

– Law enforcement sources have told the Miami Herald that WR Donte’ Stallworth tested positive for marijuana after fatally striking pedestrian Mario Reyes. Stallworth’s civil and criminal cases have already been settled, but he remains on indefinite NFL suspension. Commissioner Goodell is sure to take this new information under advisement when deciding how long to extend Stallworth’s suspension.

– The Lions have acquired WR Dennis Northcutt from the Jaguars in exchange for S Gerald Alexander.

TNA

– In a likely indication that they are through with the company, the official TNA website has removed the pictures of multiple wrestlers from its roster page. Among those removed from the page include Jacqueline, Raven, and Naito & Yujiro of the No Limit tag team. Jacqueline had not appeared on television in recent months, Raven was believed to be working on a pay-per-appearance deal, and the contracts of No Limit were set to expire soon. Shane Douglas was also recently removed from the roster page. He was working on a pay-per-appearance deal.
