Raw Review (5/24/10) New Raw GM

RAW

Raw comes to you live from Toledo, Ohio.

Opener

Batista opens being helped to the ring after taking a thrashing at OTL. He’s put in a wheelchair in the middle of the ring – probably Vickie Guerrero’s wheelchair – and starts complaining. He said he quit against Cena – he actually said John Lena – because his life was being threatened. After more complaining, Justin Roberts interrupts and announces that the new full-time Raw GM is Bret Hart. Bret comes out and says if you want another title match you have to face Randy Orton tonight with the winner moving onto the Fatal 4-Way PPV title match. Batista says he’s hurt, so Bret announces Randy as the winner and says maybe Batista should just quit, and Batista eventually obliges. For those not in the know, Batista’s contract is up and he wants to pursue a movie career, although he has left the door open to a return. All in all, a great segment with Batista whining.

Sheamus d. Mark Henry (*)
Sheamus won after about four minutes. But really, since the winner qualifies for F4W, was there really any doubt that Sheamus would lose? Of course not.

Backstage

Jon Lovitz with Maryse. It sucked.

Backstage

Bret talking with Edge when Jericho interrupts. Awesome to have 3 Canadians on the screen at the same time. So it’s Cena vs. Edge vs. Jericho, where if Cena wins, neither guy gets into the PPV and they find someone else. Edge said he’s the best Canadian of the three and left. Jericho said Bret better not get in his way or else becoming GM will be the worst decision of Bret’s life.

Undertaker is back on SD. He’ll be in the F4W.

Maryse & Alicia Fox d. Gail Kim & Eve Torres (1/2*)
All four battled, the ref cleared Gail out, Alicia kicked Eve and then Maryse finished her with the DDT. You didn’t miss much.

US Title: R-Truth d. The Miz (***)
Since Bret is GM, the title is up for grabs. Match was about 10 minutes with Truth winning with his flying forearm “Lie Detector” finisher. Essentially, they moved Kofi to SD and gave him the IC title and moved Truth to Raw and gave him the US title. I’m indifferent. Good match though, nice to see them get time.

Cena promo about being tired of being challenged and now issuing challenges. Soft.

In-Ring

Lovitz w/ the Bellas in the ring for a talent show. Ugh. They did this with Ozzy Osbourne – which sucked, other than Chris Masters’ pec dance hilarity – so why do it again? Khali dances with Singh, Jillian gets sent off during her entrance, and then a fan takes his eyeball out of his head with his finger. Gross. According to PWInsider, WWE Creative Team member Joe “Schmoe” Schmociosi was the eyeball dude. DiBbiase interrupts with Virgil, followed by Santino, who knocks out Virgil with a nerve hold that Lovitz taught him. Seriously. Ted hits Dream Street on Santino to end the segment. Ted wins the talent show, apparently. Thing lasted 10 minutes. It could’ve been a match.

The Hart Dynasty d. Regal & Kozlov (NR)
THD won in about a minute. Post match, they got attacked by a new team as well as a new woman that all look like skinny Umaga’s. They are the twin sons of Rikishi (Jimmy and Jules Uso) while the girl is the daughter of Jimmy Snuka (Sarona). All three of them hit synchronized Superfly splashes off the top.

The NXT guys start cutting promos. There are four left. Wade Barrett is my pick to win.

Replay of Danielson destroying Michael Cole on NXT last week. Stupid Cole. That’s vintage Danielson. He’s calling out Danielson on NXT tonight on the advice of his lawyers.

Backstage

Edge tells Jericho that he’s going to pin him instead of Cena. Meh.

Edge d. John Cena & Chris Jericho to qualify for Fatal Four Way (**1/2)
Edge was rumoured to be in for a while, so the outcome was to no one’s surprise. And no way was Cena getting pinned. There were lots of good nearfalls, submissions and two counts by all three guys. Jericho got pinned following a spear by Edge after an intense 5 minute finish. Sheamus comes out and stares down Edge and Cena. Orton comes out and does the same. I guess his separated shoulder isn’t bad enough to keep him out. Who knows what they’ll do with Jericho now though.

Three Stars of the Night

WWE Supplemental Draft Recap

To Raw:

The Great Khali & Ranjin Singh (1), Natalya (4), Ezekiel Jackson (6), Goldust (7), David Hart Smith & Tyson Kidd (10)

Analysis: Khali is technically on break now, but he’ll be nothing more than the occassional midcard match mixed with backstage comedy segments. Ranjin is a part of the WWE’s creative team, so he’s at all the TV shows. One wouldn’t move without the other. Jackson’s tenure with SD sucked – a handful of video packages, then an injury. I don’t think he’ll make that big of a splash on Raw with all the talent they have on that show. Apparently Goldust was on SD, but I totally forgot he was still with WWE. He’ll probably add to the comedy gimmick with his stuttering impediment.

I assume Natalya will get a push in the Women’s division, which she should’ve gotten from day 1. Because shes rarely used in matches, fans probably haven’t seen much of her or what she’s capable of, but she’s a solid performer. For some reason, David Hart Smith and Tyson Kidd count as one person, which is stupid since they drafted Natalya entirely by herself. So why split them there? Make up your damn mind – either draft them all as individuals, or just draft them as The Hart Legacy. About time they come to Raw, but unfortunately, their in-ring time will be cut drastically. As Unified tag champs, they’ll be back and forth between both shows for the time being.

To SmackDown:

Chavo Guerrero (2), Cody Rhodes (3), Chris Masters (5), Hornswoggle (8), Rosa Mendes (9), MVP (11)

Analysis: Chavo’s a decent performer that was pretty underused on Raw. He spent most of it jobbing to Hornswoggle, which he’ll probably continue doing on Friday nights. No surprise to see Cody being moved after the Legacy split. My guess is he’ll find himself in the Intercon/US title picture for a bit and probably win one of them at least once. Masters won’t do anything on SmackDown. He’s still in his mid-20′s, but he’s got no future in the WWE. He’ll stick around because Vince likes big guys, but I don’t ever see a push coming for him. Hornswoggle is ridiculous, and his time really should be up with WWE. He’s booked so ridiculously, and you just know him and Chavo will reunite. Rosa Mendes is a terrible performer, she always looks so lost. MVP was completely buried on Raw, and he needed a change of scenery. I like him much better as a heel. At least he’s got a decent chance at a push. Maybe they’ll yank the carpet under him like they did when he feuded with Orton for 25 minutes.

This was a 3-hour long ordeal. Thank God I didn’t do it live. At this point they had announced JTG as going to Raw and then they came back a few minutes later to say that’s wrong. I think that’s proof that they are doing this on a napkin. Great planning. Also, Vance Archer and Tyler Reks were moved to SmackDown. I haven’t missed a Raw in months, and I didn’t even know they were on Raw.

SmackDown continues to lose power (THD), but I’ll still catch a show every now and then to see CM Punk and Christian in action. All in all, my hope is that Christian gets a major title run, or at least a huge push. We’ll see how it goes, but he’s easily the most deserving guy on the roster that hasn’t been given anything. He’s been around for so long too, it’s years overdue.

WWE Raw Recap (3/1/10)

RAW

Raw comes to you live from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

In-Ring Segment

Promo from Shawn Michaels talking about WrestleMania. Huge pop from HBK despite costing the Undertaker his WHC at Elimination Chamber. Shawn said Undertaker’s 17-0, but that nobody gave Taker a run for his money like Shawn did last year. He said how the locker room doubted that he could beat Undertaker at WM. He wanted somebody to meet him face to face to talk about it. Cue HHH. Shawn snaps, thinking that HHH doubted him, but HHH clarifies and says he knows HBK can win. HHH does a nice promo talking about how HBK’s the best ever. They start to talk about 28 days later, the Raw after WM, and how they’ll be Unified tag champs because HHH invoked their rematch clause against ShowMiz. Great segment overall – too bad I can’t say the same about the rest of the show…

Backstage

We meet Cheech & Chong. Hornswoggle gives Chong a box of hallucinogenic drugs in the form of Lucky Charms cereal. The room started spinning, which was stupid. Made me sick to my stomach. Useless segment.

Randy Orton d. Ted Dibiase ended in DQ (*1/2)

Pretty lame match – 9 minutes long, but no finishers attempted, and Rhodes made the interference to give RKO the win by DQ. Orton fights off the heel tandem as they escape from the ring. Orton vs. Rhodes & Dibiase next week. My guess is a triple threat at WM, but that’s just my speculation. If anyone doesn’t see Orton turning face by now…

Backstage

Unbelieveable. Cheech walks in on Chong, who’s trippin’, and says he can’t have “sugar because he’s diabetic.” Is “sugar” street for “weed?” Chong thinks he’s coming Eve’s hair, when it turns out to be William Regal. He’s also staring at Kelly Kelly’s chest, when it turns out to be Chris Masters. There was an alright pop when the people changed, but overall, this is moronic.

Jack Swagger d. Santino to qualify for MITB (DUD)

Swagger wins the squash in under 30 seconds. At least we know who’s not winning MITB.

In-Ring Segment

Cena talking about how hard he’s worked to get where he’s at. Batista comes out to explain his motivation for attacking Cena. He said he wanted Cena at WM, so he got DQ’d on purpose the week before and then sent a message to Cena afterwards. He complained about how WWE picked Cena to be the face of WWE even though Batista’s accomplished just as much in the same amount of time. He went on this speech about how they have been the biggest stars in WWE since the Attitude Era ended, noting that they each won major titles at WM21. Batista said he doesn’t care about the fans like Cena does, but cares about the money. While Cena’s kissing babies and hugging fat girls (HAHAHA – great stuff!), Batista will be in the gym thinking about beating Cena at WrestleMania. He concluded by saying Cena can’t beat him and he knows it. Hands down, the best Batista promo I’ve ever heard. He didn’t screw up at all, not even once. His heel persona is day-and-night better than his babyface one. WWE’s top heels are in excellent shape right now -  Jericho, Punk and Batista, which is always a good sign.

Backstage

More Cheech & Chong. FML. Chavo was dressed in a Mariachi outfit while Carlito & Primo also had getups, despite being Puerto Rican and hating each other. Then Katie, Yoshi and a chicken with Santino’s voice told us the pajamas pillow fight was coming up next. This is why I stopped watching Raw for a bit.

MVP d. Zack Ryder to qualify for MITB (DUD)

Still only a minute long, and still a squash. Waste of time. Might as well post the results on WWE.com. The six guys in the Money in the Bank match are Christian, MVP, Jack Swagger, Kane, Dolph Ziggler and Shelton Benjamin. Two more spots left. Logically, Christian is the pick to win.

Eve wins Diva Pajama Pillowfight

They were dressed in pajamas. Eve pinned Alicia for the win. This aatch got more time than the two Money in the Bank matches combined. Why, I do not know. Post match, Hornswoggle gave everybody Lucky Charms as Cole tried to prevent Lawler from eating it. These two potheads (poth-eeds?) may be the worst guest hosts ever.

Hall of Fame

Mad Dog Vachon will be the next inductee in the Hall of Fame.

In-Ring Segment

Vince came out first to suck up to Bret before introducing. Bret had a cast on his broken leg while Vince waited for him in the ring. Vince talked about how this wasn’t going to be Bret’s goodbye. He said Bret called him a World Champion liar so Vince admitted to lying, but that he was a champion at it. Nice camera angles seeing Vince’s reflection in Bret’s aviators. Vince talked about Bret challenging him at Mania, but Bret pointed out that his leg was broken. Vince calls him a coward and kicked the crutch away. As Vince left the ring, Bret said, “You want a match at WrestleMania? You got it!” Crowd popped, but not as loud as I thought they would. The match is on at WM. This angle didn’t really need the broken leg aspect. Before leaving to go backstage, VKM said he’ll be wrestling John Cena next week. That’ll be good to stop me from watching TNA have Hogan and Flair fighting next week. I’m not sure what will happen with that though.

Next week’s guest host is Criss Angel. Should be decent. Also we get Crazy Vince vs. Cena plus Orton vs. Rhodes & Dibiase in a handicap match.

The Miz & Big Show d. DX (*1/4)
DX’s final chance to win back the tag titles they didn’t want. They were working fast here because the show was about to end and they only gave the match four minutes. HHH takes a chokeslam, HBK superkicks Show. Michaels and Miz each get the hot tag with HBK cleaning house. He got the kip up and top rope elbow when suddenly the Undertaker’s face appeared on screen. I thought it was a still image until the end where he rolled his eyes into his head. Miz used that to roll Michaels up for the pinfall. Funny how at WrestleMania, he’s going to kick out of Tombstone Piledrivers, but on Raw he loses clean to a rollup in four minutes – and not just once, either. This was the last time DX is going to team up for a while because when Shawn comes back from summer vacation Hunter will probably be a heel.

Post match, HHH goes to help HBK up, who yells at him not to touch him. As HBK left, Sheamus hopped the rail and attacked Triple H and gave him his bicycle kick twice at the announce table. Fade to black with Sheamus standing over HHH on top of the announce table. There you have another WrestleMania match although I thought it would have been for the WWE Title.

Three Stars of the Night

* – Shawn Michaels
** – HHH
*** – Maryse

Final Score: 3.5

Not a good show. Five matches, 3 of them were under a minute. The promos were great tonight, between HHH, Batista/Cena and VKM/Hart. Crowd was dead for the RKO/DiBiase match, but picked up only when Orton was fending off a 2-on-1. Main event kinda sucked. In a two hour show, there was maybe 15 minutes of actual wrestling. The guest hosts were terrible, too. I’m counting down the days for Austin on March 15. After that, no more guest hosts – not including The Rock sometime in the summer. Hopefully they either find someone full-time or do what they did before where matches just get booked out of nowhere. I still say JBL should be GM, or at least announcer again. Flair would’ve been perfect if he wasn’t do stupid.

Raw Review (2/15/10)

RAW

Raw comes to you live from Des Moines, Iowa.

Sheamus d. Randy Orton (*1/4)

Orton played the face in the match, just like the Royal Rumble. Same style match as the Rumble, as well. Sheamus got attacked by Ted, then Cody went after him, which the ref saw, thus DQ’ing Orton. Is this Raw or a repeat of the Rumble? Post match, Orton hit Rhodes with an RKO, Sheamus booted Ted and then Orton hit the RKO on Sheamus as the last man standing. Weak match, good ending.

In-Ring/Backstage

Bret Hart promo talking about wanting a WrestleMania 26 match but Vince had called it off. Bret teases saying goodbye for the last time and leaves. John Cena catches up with him and chats, and they part as Hart gets into a limo. The camera pans and there’s a loud crash and Hart screaming. The camera pans back, and a woman driver backed into Hart’s limo (more specifically, Hart’s leg) which wasn’t fully in the limo, and was rammed between the door and the side of his limo. Cena rushes back and after screaming at the driver to move the limo up, eventually pushes it by himself. There were so many things wrong with this segment – the woman’s limo had its reverse lights on the whole time it was in view, and Hart’s limo was behind it the whole time, so there’s no excuse for not seeing it. Second, how much more stereotypical can you get with the ‘women are bad drivers’ gag? Thirdly, didn’t something like this happen before? Major flashbacks of Rikishi/Austin. Brought back memories of Austin/Hart in the ambulance as well. YouTube it. Anyways, it’ll be interesting to see where WWE goes with this. Is Bret going to fight at WM26 with a bad leg caused by Vince, or is Bret not in ring shape and he’ll simply be the manager for Cena at his ‘Mania match? We’ll see.

MVP & Mark Henry d. ShowMiz (3/4*)

MVP countered a Miz pin attempt with a successful pin for the finish. Maybe a tag title match? No promos or any mention of Miz’ US title.

Backstage

Jerry Springer segment. Not good by any means, but they basically said that Kelly Kelly was pregnant, then had all the comedy guys (Santino, Masters and Hornswoggle) claim to be the daddy. One of the Bella’s is a guy. Just a stupid segment overall. Ranjin Singh, who is on WWE’s creative team, actually made fun of how bad it was by calling it a waste of time. Mae Young kissing Springer for the finish. Waste of 15 minutes.

Ted DiBiase d. Kofi Kingston (1/4*)

Short match, only about three minutes. Neither of these guys have a chance of winning the Chamber, so it was kind of pointless. DiBiase won with the Dream Street. Kofi’s dropped considerably since he was main eventing with Orton. King and Cole still push him, though. Antonio Inoki is also the next HOF inductee.

Cena segment. Batista will be on the show next week to meet Cena. Even though they’ve faced each other a million times, it’s good that they’re finally doing this. Next week they go face to face. Even though it was well done, they spent two hours hyping up a promo to hype up another promo next week.

John Cena vs. HHH ends in a DQ (**)

Alright match, about 10-12 minutes long. No one did anything big as to not ruin the Chamber. No way was anyone getting beaten clean, although they did have a match late in 2009 when HHH beat Cena clean before Cena’s “last match on Raw” Ironman match. Sheamus interferes and kicks HHH. Cena tried to get him in the AA, but Sheamus avoids and kicks Cena. Sheamus standing over both guys as the show goes off the air. Sheamus was my early pick to win the Chamber, since it’s too early for him to drop it, and I think he’ll be facing HHH at WM26 for the strap. Usually, the guy to win Raw/SD loses at the PPV, but I think this rule of thumb will be ignored this time around. RKO/Cena/HHH are the other maybe’s, no chance for Kofi/Ted.

Three Stars of the Show
* – Randy Orton
** – Ted DiBiase
*** – Sheamus

Final Score: 3

Where was HBK? How can you leave him out? As long as it doesn’t become a regular thing, I guess it’s OK. No promoting the Chamber though, which was odd. The title match is on the backburner for me, I’m more interested in the Hart/McMahon and Cena/Batista storylines extending through to WM26. Gail/Maryse have a women’s match, but they didn’t get any time on Raw, nor was their match mentioned. Springer’s segment was 15 minutes I wish I had back. This officially ends WWE’s streak of consecutive above average Raw’s. Let’s hope they rebound for next week.

WWE Royal Rumble Recap (1/31/2010)

ROYAL RUMBLE

Live from Atlanta, Georgia, it’s the WWE Royal Rumble. WrestleMania 26 is 55 days away.

ECW Championship: (C) Christian d. Ezekiel Jackson (**1/4)

Jackson was on offense for the majority of the match, with Christian selling everything well. The match pace was pretty slow, but Christian made it work. I had picked Jackson to win, since I thought Christian would win the Money in the Bank at WrestleMania 26, but that’s not the case for now I guess. I was hoping Christian would get drafted to Raw/Smackdown, but I guess that’s on hold, too.

Backstage

Lame segment with Teddy Long, Tiffany, Cryme Tyme, The Great Khali and The Miz. Was supposed to be funny. It wasn’t. Cue the typical “Pants on the Ground” stuff.

Backstage

Cody Rhodes w/ Randy Orton. They tease a Legacy breakup (or the beginning of it), with Rhodes throwing Ted DiBiase under the bus.

US Championship: (C) The Miz d. MVP (*1/2)

The “Miz is awesome” chants rule. Decent match, nothing special. Both guys are in the Rumble. MVP lays out Miz post-match for taunting, which cues booing.

Backstage

Big Show w/ Chris Jericho & R-Truth. Not much to see here.

Backstage

Orton w/ DiBiase. DiBiase throws Rhodes under the bus this time. RKO declines help from anyone.

WWE Championship: (C) Sheamus d. Randy Orton via DQ (**)

The colour contrast between these two is ridiculous. Even King pointed it out. Slow match, with both guys working body parts on the other. Rhodes hits Sheamus from behind, distracting the ref which allowed Orton to land an RKO and get the cover, but the ref rang the bell for the DQ. Post-match, huge RKO chants. He hits Cody, then gets pulled off by DiBiase, who he hits. Sheamus comes in with the kick and floors Orton, Legacy leaves him laying in the ring. I don’t know if this is a face turn for Orton – Miz, MVP and Orton all got mixed reactions, so it’s tough to say. It looks like Orton’s on his own now, which I didn’t think would happen.

Women’s Championship: Mickie James d. (C) Michelle McCool (DUD)

McCool’s pre-match promo was bad. Layla wore the fat suit again. McCool kicked Layla accidentally, then hit the Mickie DDT on Michelle for the win. It lasted about 10 seconds. Post match, the other divas came out and they dumped a ‘Congrats Mickie’ cake onto Michelle & Layla.

World Heavyweight Championship: (C) The Undertaker d. Rey Mysterio (**3/4)

Not much crowd pop throughout the match. Taker got a nosebleed that seemed to make the world incomprehensible for Lawler. Match was alright. Cue Undertaker not wrestling much between now and ‘Mania. They showed HBK watching the Undertaker match. Kane showed up to tell him that his obsession with Undertaker is unhealthy. Kane left, HHH walked in and DX basically wished each other luck. Shawn told him Undertaker vs. Michaels is meant to be. HHH says “I know, that’s why you’ll have to find another way.”

30-Man Royal Rumble: Edge Wins (***1/2)

#1 is Dolph Ziggler, #2 is Evan Bourne. I guess nobody’s going from first to win this year, eh? They worked slowly, not much happened. #3 is CM Punk with Serena at ringside. Punk threw Bourne out and clotheslined Ziggler out. Punk grabbed a mic and thanked us for joining him. JTG is #4. Punk got rid of JTG in about 20 seconds. #5 is Great Khali. Punk tried to save him, but Khali wanted none of that. #6 is Beth Phoenix. She kisses Khali and eliminates him from the match. Punk fought off her attack and gave her the GTS. #7 is Zack Ryder as Punk tosses Beth out. Punk hit Ryder with the mic, then tossed him out. Punk’s mouth is bleeding.

#8 is HHH. They go face to face. They brawl a bit and #9 is Drew McIntyre. He’s rumoured to be a favourite of HHH backstage, so the placement is interesting. HHH eliminated Punk by countering the GTS. #10 is Ted DiBiase. The heels worked on HHH as we got #11, who is John Morrison. Starship Pain by Morrison on McIntyre. #12 is Kane, who is in for the 12th time, which is a record shared with Shawn Michaels. The announcers push Kane winning, although a monkey could tell you he hasn’t got a snowball’s chance in hell. Chokeslam to HHH. Cody Rhodes is #13, so we have six guys in the ring right now.

#14 is MVP. Miz attacks him in the aisle with the US title. MVP gets helped to the back, so he never entered the match. #15 is Carlito. Eight guys in the ring. Carlito actually got some offense in. #16 is The Miz. MVP returns and clotheslines Miz and himself over the top, so they’re both out. #17 is Matt Hardy. Kane shoved Hardy out after about 20 seconds for Matt. HHH flipped Kane out. Everybody ran at HHH and he gave them all spinebusters. #18 is Shawn Michaels. They threw everybody out except McIntyre pretty quickly. Double clothesline on McIntyre sends him out. We’re at #19 and it’s John Cena. He works over the DX guys. HHH hits a Pedigree on Cena. Michaels Sweet Chin’s HHH out over the top. Wow. #20 is Shelton Benjamin. He’s out pretty quick, so just Michaels and Cena. #21 is Yoshi Tatsu, but he’s gone quickly.

#22 is the Big Show with only Michaels and Cena in there. #23 is Mark Henry. Bodyslam by Henry onto Show, Cena then tries an Attitude Adjustment on Henry with his already bad back. Idiot. #24 is Chris Masters. No pec dance tonight. He’s out after about 30 seconds. #25 is R-Truth.

R-Truth eliminates Mark Henry and Big Show at the same time as they were hanging. #26 is Jack Swagger. It’s 10:27 p.m. and there’s only four spots left, we’ve got at least Jericho and Batista left. Swagger clotheslined Michaels, but Shawn hung on with one arm. #27 is Kofi Kingston. Kingston eliminated Swagger. Four in the ring with three spots left. Kingston just eliminated R-Truth with his feet. #28 is Chris Jericho. We have Batista left and one more.

Cena hit the AA on Cena rather quickly. Michaels hit the top rope elbow on Jericho leading to a “vintage” Michaels from Cole. Michaels went for the superkick, but Kofi jumped in front of Jericho and hit the Trouble in Paradise. Cena capitalized and hit the AA on Kofi to send him out. #29 is Edge. Woo! Spear on Jericho, spear on Michaels, spear on Cena. Edge tosses Jericho out. #30 is Batista. We’ve got the final four.

Final four: Michaels, Cena, Edge and Batista. They all hit their finishers on the other and they were all knocked out as the announcers set the stage for the final four. Edge looks to be in great shape showing no ill effects. When he threw Jericho out he taunted him and the crowd went nuts. Edge is definitely being booked as a babyface. It’s 10:35 p.m. with the final four, so this foursome will get some time. Michaels was in control, he hit a superkick on Cena, a superkick on Batista and then Edge tried to clothesline him out. Michaels superkicked Edge back in the ring. Batista clubbed HBK in the back and Shawn fell to the floor. He’s stunned. The crowd is silent. They’re playing up that he doesn’t get his match with Undertaker now. Shawn threw a ref down on the floor and went back in the ring. He then superkicked ref Charles Robinson in the ring.

Cena’s been in the ring for 25 minutes. Batista charged at him, Cena ducked and Batista went out. Edge is waiting for Cena – perfect angle, perfect camera angle, beautiful setup. Cena charges in and Edge tosses him out for the win. Edge wins the Rumble. The match was about 50 minutes.

Final Thoughts

There are usually some memorable spots, or something where a younger star emerges. This PPV didn’t have that, but it was still very good. Only one of the four titles switched hands, but that’s fine as well. Does this mean Jericho gets the WHC at the Elimination Chamber PPV to set up Edge vs. Jericho for the title at WrestleMania 26? That’d be awesome. Lots of questions now. They’ve advanced the storyline very well, which is what they needed to do.

Score: 8

Red Sox Deal Lowell to Rangers?, Giants Like Uggla, Andrew Martin/Chris Benoit Updates, WWE Wellness Update

VoV

-– You can keep up with VoV through Twitter by clicking here.

– Add me to Facebook by clicking here.

MLB

– Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com heard from a source that the rumoured deal between Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell and Rangers C Max Ramirez trade “could still blow up.” The Rangers have concerns about Lowell’s hip and thumb issues, and rightly so. He exhibited real durability issues this past season and hasn’t played over 120 games since 2007. Lowell will be manning a less demanding position in Texas (first base), but that doesn’t mean he can stay healthy for the entire season. Stay tuned.

– Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News has heard that the Giants have real interest in acquiring Marlins 2B Dan Uggla. Uggla, 29, hit .243/.354/.459 this past season with 31 homers and 90 RBI. As Baggarly notes, his right-handed pull power would fit in well at AT&T Park, and is something the Giants have been without for far too long. The Marlins are hoping to trade Uggla at some point this winter.

– The Astros have signed RHP Brandon Lyon to a three-year/$15M deal. Shocking that Lyon gets three years, when they just told RHP LaTroy Hawkins he couldn’t have a two-year deal.

– SI.com’s Jon Heyman reports Braves RHP Rafael Soriano has been traded to the Rays. The deal is pending a physical, which probably won’t go down until Thursday or morning or afternoon. It’s not yet clear who the Braves are getting in return, though RHP Jesse Chavez’s name has been thrown around. Soriano should contend for the ninth-inning job in Tampa Bay. He had a 2.97 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP and a 102/27 K/BB ratio in 75 2/3 innings this past year. Most teams have dropped out of the running for Soriano because, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Braves are asking for a “solid return” and want the acquiring team to pick up all of Soriano’s 2010 salary. Because of his decision to accept Atlanta’s offer of arbitration, that could mean up to $8M.

WWE

– ESPN.com has published an extensive report on brain damage to pro athletes, especially pro wrestlers, with the big news that former WWE wrestler Andrew “Test” Martin had brain damage similar to Chris Benoit’s at the time of his death in March.

Studies conducted on Martin’s brain revealed that he suffered damage “stemming from repeated blows to the head.” Dr. Bennet Omalu, co-director of the Brain Injury Research Institute, told ESPN that they discovered “excessive amounts of tau proteins similar to those he found in Benoit.” Both Benoit and Martin are said to have had brains similar to “those of Alzheimer’s patients more than twice their age.”

Omalu explains, “After repeated blows to the head, at some point the brain loses the ability to heal itself. he tau impairs normal brain function and kills brain cells. The delicate balance of the neurotransmitters, which control moods and drives and maintains safety, can be destroyed. With Andrew Martin as the second case, the WWE and the sport in general have to ask themselves, ‘Is this a trend?’ The science tells us that jumping off 10-foot ladders and slamming people with tables and chairs is simply bad for the brain.”

WWE was contacted by ESPN and said the following regarding Dr. Omalu’s findings:

While this is a new emerging science, the WWE is unaware of the veracity of any of these tests, be it for Chris Benoit or Andrew Martin. Dr. Omalu claims that Mr. Benoit had a brain that resembled an 85-year-old with Alzheimer’s, which would lead one to ponder how Mr. Benoit would have found his way to an airport, let alone been able to remember all the moves and information that is required to perform in the ring. WWE has been asking to see the research and tests results in the case of Mr. Benoit for years and has not been supplied with them.

– Much has been said regarding WWE’s policy on talent returning to the company with ’strikes’ from previous Wellness Policy infractions. To clarify things once and for all, the policy officially states: “Any WWE talent who leaves the WWE for any reason with a first or second violation on his/her record will maintain those strikes if he/she returns to the WWE.”

Furthermore, any talent with two ’strikes’ — a category which includes Chris Masters, William Regal and Jeff Hardy — would be immediately fired and banned for at least one year upon a third offense.

The Policy specifically states: “A WWE Talent who is terminated by the WWE for a third violation will be prohibited from returning to the WWE for at least one year.”

– The December 7 edition of WWE Raw with Mark Cuban as the special guest host drew a 3.2 cable rating. This is down from last week’s 3.6 and not a great sign headed into Sunday’s  WWE’s Tables, Ladders and Chairs PPV. The show did hours of 3.18 and 3.28. By comparison, Monday Night Football on ESPN this week did a 9.7 rating.

– Alicia Fox (dislocated shoulder) is out for a few weeks.

*HUGE* Spoiler on The Undertaker’s World Heavyweight Championship Run, Allen Iverson Retires, 76ers Lose Williams, Jays Ink Shortstops, JR Contract Update

VoV

-– You can keep up with VoV through Twitter by clicking here.

NBA

– Allen Iverson’s manager, Gary Moore, told Yahoo Sports that G Allen Iverson is planning to retire. This wasn’t out of the blue, as Iverson wanted a starting role and no NBA team was apparently willing to offer one. Nonetheless, A.I. fell to Earth pretty quickly. Just two seasons ago he played all 82 games for Denver and averaged 26.4 points. NBA sources say that Iverson would listen if a team is interested in signing him, but at this point that seems unlikely. If this is the end, the 34-year-old concludes his career averaging 27.0 points, 6.2 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

– Sixers G Lou Williams (jaw) has undergone surgery and is out eight weeks. Williams, who had his jaw wired shut, will meet with a nutritionist to help him maintain his weight while he’s on a liquid diet.

– Mavericks G Jason Kidd has passed G Mark Jackson for second place for all-time career assists. Kidd delivered seven assists last night against the Rockets to reach 10,337 in his career. He came in needing five to pass Jackson’s career total (10,334), and now trails only Stockton (15,806).

MLB

– The Jays have signed SS Alex Gonzalez to a one-year/$2.75M deal with a club option worth $2.5M for 2011. The 32-year-old Gonzalez split last season between Cincinnati and Boston, batting .238 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs. The Venezuelan was an All-Star in 1999, and is a career .247 hitter with 114 home runs and 521 RBIs. Gonzo comes with a fine reputation with the glove, ranking as one of the best defensive shortstops in the league. This means that SS Marco Scutaro is gone.

Speaking of Scutaro, the Red Sox are ‘at or near the top’ of Scutaro’s list of potential destinations as a free agent, according to his agent Peter Greenberg. “Boston is at or near the top of Marco’s list of where to sign but quite a few teams have expressed interest. There’s a lot of teams interested in him in different situations. We still have to have lots of conversations and we obviously have to finalize terms at a certain point but clearly, looking at this situation, Marco has a lot of interest in coming to Boston, and he told me that from the start.” Scutaro, 34, is believed to be seeking a three-year contract. Since the Blue Jays will undoubtedly offer Scutaro arbitration in order to make him a Type A free agent, the Red Sox would have to surrender a draft pick in order to sign him.

– The Jays have signed UTIL John McDonald to a two-year/$3M deal. McDonald, 35, is returning to the Jays for a sixth season. Johnny Mac recorded a career-high .384 slugging percentage in 2009, and his .258 batting average was his best mark since 2005.

– The Royals have traded infielder INF Tug Hutlett to the Red Sox for cash or a PTBNL.

WWE

– According to the PWInsider, The Undertaker is expected to retain the World Heavyweight Championship through the Royal Rumble, at which point he will drop the title to Batista.

There has been talk of running the match at WWE’s annual January PPV spectacular with Batista heading into WrestleMania with the belt. The feud has already commenced as Batista defeated Kane at last night’s SmackDown taping in Bridgeport, Connecticut to become the No. 1 contender to Undertaker’s World Heavyweight Championship. The two heavyweights will square off in a Chairs Match at next month’s WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs PPV.

– Jim Ross has yet to sign a new contract with WWE and due to the uncertainty regarding his condition. There have not been any serious contract talks nor any offer made. His contract is set to expire in three weeks.

– As young superstars Kofi Kingston and Sheamus are getting big pushes on WWE’s Raw brand, one young star not getting the same treatment is Jack Swagger. WWE has virtually given up on pushing Swagger to the next level and are disappointed with how he’s progressed thus far, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

When he first showed up on the WWE scene a little over a year ago, “The All-American American” was pegged as a future main eventer due to his look, size, charisma and in-ring ability. Fellow Oklahoman Jim Ross was said to have high hopes for him and has written extensively about Swagger’s natural ability and potential in his blog. Swagger is considered to be a comedy guy and is ranked slightly lower than Chavo Guerrero on the Raw pecking order (Ouch.) Some feel he’s in danger of becoming “this year’s Chris Masters”. Stay tuned.

RAW Review (9/7/09)

VoV

FI-NALLY…the RAW Review…has-come-BACK…to Voice of Valeri. I apologize for the number of consecutive weeks without having your crotches rocked (5 or 6 by my count – and I supposedly didn’t miss anything), but there shouldn’t be any more problems from here on out. I haven’t seen/read the spoilers for RAW, but I’ve seen SmackDown! roughly every week. I’m telling you now, if you like wrestling, watch that instead of RAW.

RAW

RAW # 850 comes to you live from Chicago, Illinois. This week’s RAW is hosted by none other than former Price is Right host Bob Barker. The price is wrong, bitch.

Opener

I’ll be honest, I missed this part. I’m sure it wasn’t anything of any substance, though. Nice setup for RAW though. The Price is RAW is stupid.

MVP d. Chris Jericho

Great match. Decent finish to the match.

Backstage

I’ve got two words for ‘ya – spin it. HBK gets Chris Masters and Triple H gets Randy Orton.

Evan Bourne d. Chavo Guerrero

Guerrero “loses” a Chevrolette Corvette. Hornswoggle with the distraction, Bourne wins via school boy. What a stupid waste of time.

John Cena d. Cody Rhodes via DQ

Snoozer of a promo from Rhodes. Lame match with Orton interfering afterwards. Waste.

Batista has a “major announcement” next week. I hope it’s retirement.

Barker’s Game

Coming out to the Price is Right theme has always been my dream. Bringing White Sox C A.J. Pierzynski in is so dumb. Cubs fans were rioting. What a waste of time. SmackDown! never has crap like this.

The Big Show d. Santino Marella – Mark Henry d. The Big Show

That was shorter than Christian’s title defense at SummerSlam. What a mess trying to raise Show’s arm. As for the second match, picture Barney fighting the Kool Aid Man. More crotch grabbing than a rap video. Is Henry not supposed to be the World’s Stongest Man? If Cena can lift him, there’s no way Henry can’t.

Backstage

Barker with Josh Mathews. Snooooooore.

Trish guests host RAW next week in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I miss her.

Backstage

Bob Barker ruins Chavo. *Sigh*. Poor attempt at re-enacting Happy Gilmore.

DX d. RKO & Chris Masters

Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve seen the MasterBaiter. His combover doesn’t work. He’s lost of ton of muscle, and because of that, partnered with his stupid haircut, has lost all of his push-ability. Decent match at best. Awesome kick at the end. Hilarious chase afterwards. I seriously thought HBK sliding on top of the trunk was going to make the limo stop.

Decent RKO/Cena ending with a blown finish.

Final Thoughts

I’m going to put as much thought into this review as creative did to RAW. It sucked ass from a straw.

Score: 2.5

RAW Recap (7/27/09) – Shaq Hosts RAW, SummerSlam Main Event Revealed

RAW

RAW #844 comes to you live from Washington, D.C.. Hey Kobe, tell me how my ass tastes!

Opener

Kind of a dumb segment between Shaq and Y2J. The Christina knock was pretty third grade, but calling Big Slow a fat boy was awesome. Having Cryme Tyme open means RAW is desperate. Shaq held his own on the mic, though.

Mark Henry d. Carlito

Awful match. Was this what turning Carlito heel was for? Is it me, or does every heel on the show other than Orton seems to lose all the time?

Mickie James, Gail Kim & Kelly Kelly d. Beth Phoenix, Rosa Mendez & Alicia Fox

Maryse is having knee surgery, so RAW is running thin on heels at the moment. Not much to say here, though.

MVP vs. Chris Masters ends in Double Countout

I feel bad for MVP, after that RKO promo, he’s been going nowhere in a hurry. His booking has been so bad, having him get counted out with Masters wasn’t the right move. Good on Masters to make his comeback. And with more hair. Kudos.

Kofi Kingston d. The Brian Kendrick

Waste. Of. Time.

Backstage

DiBiase jumping Triple H means that he loses tonight, guaranteed.

Triple H vs. Cody Rhodes

Cody looked sharp. I love how Triple H is scurrying to beat 6:49 but has Cody in a 5-minute headlock, then another two minutes to decide what to do with DiBiase on the apron. Of course, with dying seconds, his knee must give way. I hate beat the clock matches. Thank God it isn’t RKO/HHH at SummerSlam.

Backstage

Shaq and Santino playing Scrabble. Good call, I’d rather do that than watch a HHH match, too.

Hornswoggle d. Chavo Guerrero

Seriously. Chavo had a blindfold, missed a splash, pinned. Horny’s 4-0 over Chavo, who can’t seem to catch a break. Poor guy. Midgets should be shot out of cannons, not applauded for in wrestling matches.

Backstage

Swagger w/ RKO. Does anyone else think Swagger’s going to win? Didn’t think so.

Evan Bourne d. Jack Swagger

Good match. These two work well together.

Jeremy Piven from Entourage and some other movie is hosting RAW next week. Don’t know about you guys, but every time I see Piven, I picture the gay guy from Rush Hour 2.

John Cena d. The Miz

Lame. Miz’ promo prior to the match was totally unnecessary. Ultimately, the same main event as the last few months. *Sigh*.

Cryme Tyme d. Y2J & The Big Show

Yarrr, Big Show’s new one-piece spandex is going to replace that whale in my nightmares. The crowd ate up the Show/Shaq confrontation, and I’d love to see a match between the two. Too bad it won’t happen.

Final Thoughts

There were nine matches on this show, so I guess I can’t complain that much considering I’m the guy complaining about a lack of matches every week. Of course, none were very good. Shaq was great, but he stole the show, as their confrontation was easily the highlight of the night. Prepare for another SummerSlam – and no, it’s not a repeat.

TONS of NHL Rumours – Bouwmeester, Sedins, Giguere, Heatley, Mitsuharu Misawa Update, MLB Rumours

VoV

– Hero List updated.

– G Kobe Bryant and the Lakers beat the Magic in Orlando to win Game 5 of the Finals by a score of 99-86 for a 4-1 series victory to win the 2008-09 NBA Championship. This marks the fourth trophy for Kobe, who was named Finals MVP, and gives him his first without the help of Shaquille O’Neal. He finished with 30 points, six rebounds, five assists and four blocks as the Lakers easily beat the Magic for the trophy. Lakers coach Phil Jackson celebrates his NBA-best 10th Championship, passing Red Auerbach’s benchmark of nine rings. Meanwhile, Stan Van Gundy’s style and use of previously injured guard Jameer Nelson in the loss will likely be dissected for years to come.

NHL

– Leafs’ GM Brian Burke will be busy on Draft Day to say the least. A return for F Mats Sundin hasn’t been ruled out, but Burke will only look into it once his offseason to-do list is complete. The Leafs have many players on their offseason radar including the Sedins, D Mike Komisarek, and F Mike Cammaleri. It’s rumoured that D Tomas Kaberle is the most likely Leaf to be on the move. The Leafs and Lightning continue to talk in regards to their No. 2 draft selection, but if talks fall through, the Leafs could move up to fifth by dealing with the Kings, a team very interested in dealing their pick for some veteran defensive help.

– According to reports, there is mutual interest between Sens’ F Dany Heatley and the Sharks. The Sharks and Sens have already held talks regarding the sniper. Heatley and F Joe Thornton would be a dynamic duo, but can the Sharks get Heatley without dealing big Joe? Talk is the deal could be a big one, with San Jose looking to dump F Jonathan Cheechoo and F Ryan Clowe this summer. Don’t be surprised if the Sens first round pick gets thrown into this to make this deal a big one.

– The Canucks are still working hard to sign the Sedins, but nothing is close there as of yet. I’m hearing that if the Canucks lose the Sedins, they will use that money to lure F Marian Gaborik and one of either D Jay Bouwmeester or D Scott Niedermayer to Vancouver. At this point, J-Bo is choosing between the Canucks and Oilers.

– According to a reliable source, F Saku Koivu is likely to sign with the Wild to play with his brother, Mikko. I’ve also been told that F Alexei Kovalev and D Mike Komisarek are likely to re-sign with the Habs.

– The rumoured deal between the Ducks and Kings involving D Chris Pronger for D Jack Johnson and the No. 5 overall pick deal isn’t going to happen, as Johnson’s contract demands are just too high. The Ducks are rumoured to be heavily shopping G JS Giguere, and the Leafs, Oilers and Kings could be interested.

– We’re hoping for a decision by judge Baum today about the future of the Phoenix Coyetes. While I have no inside information on the matter, I believe Jim Balsillie will pay whatever it takes to complete his dream. He’s got corporate sponsors on board, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he offers some of the shares in the team for a little help at the start. Stay tuned.

– Devils’ F John Madden will not re-sign with the Devils and will test the free agent market on July 1.

– Penguins’ F Bill Guerin will not retire this offseason.

– G Ty Conklin is not expected to be back with Detroit next campaign. The 33-year-old netminder is scheduled to become an UFA on July 1 and it is unclear if the Wings want to retain his services. Goaltender of the future, Jimmy Howard, has toiled in the minors the greater part of four years and looks set to test his medal as an NHL backstop. GM Ken Holland also promised that Howard would make the team for the 2009-10 season.

– Speaking of the Wings, D Brian Rafalski played the majority of the playoffs with a herniated disc. Rafalski missed some action in the post-season, but turned in another solid effort for the Red Wings. Raffy recorded 12 points in 18 playoff contests. He should be ready for next year.

– Penguins’ F Sidney Crosby presented his side of the story, regarding the post-series handshake after Game 7 on Friday. Crosby was criticized by Red Wings’ F Kris Draper for not getting into the lineup faster and shaking hands with Wings’ captain Nicklas Lidstrom. Crosby said,“My intentions were to shake hands. That we didn’t wasn’t me trying to avoid it. That’s the last thing I’d want to do. By no means was I trying to avoid shaking the other team’s hands. I think it’s important to do that.”

Crosby, now the youngest captain in NHL history at only 22, said he joined the line after about “3 or 4 minutes” of celebrating and there were “7-to-10″ Red Wings left, with “5 or 6″ that were exiting the ice surface. Crosby also added that “[he] didn’t feel like waiting around, either” after losing the Stanley Cup, so he questioned how long Lidstrom actually stood around waiting.

It doesn’t matter to be honest, shaking hands afterwards is a must. Yeah, he’s young, but he’s also “mature”, so it shouldn’t have been an issue.

– Penguins’ D Sergei Gonchar revealed that he has been played the final two rounds on a torn MCL.

– The Hurricanes have signed head coach Paul Maurice to a three-year contract extension. GM Jim Rutherford said, “When Paul came in, he did a really good job of bringing the coaching staff together. They had good chemistry, and the delegation of certain areas where everybody felt they had an important role in the staff worked well.” Ron Francis will serve as the team’s associate head coach and director of player personnel. Tom Barrasso will work as the Carolina’s assistant coach and will continue to help out the goaltenders. Tom Rowe and Kevin McCarthy were retained as the club’s other assistant coaches.

– F Ian Laperriere will likely not be a member of the Avalanche next season, as he is poised to test the open market as a free agent. The Avalanche did not handle the Lapperriere situation very well. They had several offers at the trade deadline to deal him to contending teams for at least a draft pick, but chose to keep him. Then they offered him a one-year deal worth less than the $1.15M he made this past season. Lapperriere is a heart-and-soul player and a good locker-room presence that should attract attention from other clubs. He posted 19 points and 163 penalty minutes in 74 games with Colorado last campaign.

– Wild’ F Andrew Brunette has been working hard in his efforts to recover from off-season knee surgery.
He has been put through the wringer with Minnesota’s strength and conditioning coach Kirk Olson since the procedure. Brunette suffered a completely torn ACL on January 17 and still played the remainder of the regular season. He underwent reconstructive surgery about seven weeks ago and will need four-to-six months of recovery time. Brunette registered 22 goals (second on the team) and 50 points (second on the team) in 80 games despite the injury.

– F Vernon Fiddler would like to remain a member of the Predators. He is a potential UFA this summer, and could end up on the market if the Predators choose to go a different direction. Fiddler has spent the past seven years with the organization and wants to stay put. Nashville has made him a contract offer, but nothing much has come of it.

WWE

– Japan’s Mainichi Daily News is reporting that wrestling legend Mitsuharu Misawa died on Saturday night after suffering spinal damage during a match in Hiroshima, Japan. He was 46.

Misawa was fighting in a tag team match at Hiroshima Green Arena in front of around 2,300 spectators. During the match, opponent Akitoshi Saito used a back suplex on him, causing him to strike his head and leaving him unable to move. His heart stopped shortly after.

A doctor in the audience reportedly used an automated external defibrillator (AED) to try and start his heart again, but to no avail. He was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead at 10:10 p.m. It later turned out that the cause of his death was damage to his cervical spinal cord.

– Chris Masters was indeed hired back by World Wrestling Entertainment this past week.

“The Masterpiece” had a meeting with Vince McMahon at the Los Angeles tapings a few weeks ago and was recommended by Randy Orton to be brought back. Many in WWE are curious as to how he will look like when he returns as it was noted that it will send a message.

WWE released Masters from his contract on November 8, 2007 six days after he had been suspended for 60 days for having violated the company’s drug testing policy on a second occasion. The suspension was for 60 days because he had been previously suspended on August 30, 2007 when the Signature Pharmacy scandal broke out. Shortly after his return to the ring, he was suspended for failing a drug test.

Contrary to his Wikipedia bio, Masters was not suspended when he quietly taken off the road in May 2006. Masters entered a drug rehabilitation due to an issue with prescription painkillers, but it did not count as a strike against because there was no drug test failure associated with him being sent to rehab.

He returned to WWE four months later with much less muscle mass, leading Jerry “The King” Lawler to refer to him as “leaner and meaner” Chris Masters.

Here’s a picture of Masters during his first stint with WWE:

And this is a recent picture of him. Did someone poke him with a pin?

– One source within WWE feels that the company does respectfully consider TNA as competition, although doesn‘t really entertain the idea that they will ever be a serious threat. One member of upper management says that even if TNA did increase in popularity, Vince would never take them as serious as he did WCW during the 90′s unless they did something to deliberately hurt his business.

– Rey Mysterio competed at last night’s SmackDown/ECW live event in Binghamton, New York, working a Triple Threat Match against World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk and Jeff Hardy. Punk came out on top to retain his title. This proves, once and for all, that Mysterio has not handed in his 2-weeks notice.

– WWE has hired the producer from the hit TV series, Prison Break.

MLB

– According to the Boston Globe, major league sources indicated the Sox have fielded multiple calls and some offers for RHP Brad Penny, who today became eligible to be traded. Because Penny was signed as a free agent, he could not be traded until June 15. At this point, there have been no significant offers.

– Speaking of the Red Sox, they and the have had trade talks regarding SS Jack Wilson, but no move in that direction seems imminent or even likely based on how talks have gone to this point. Wilson has an $8.4M club option for 2010 on his contract, but management has indicated it is highly unlikely to exercise it. That being the case, Wilson could become a free agent this offseason. The team and player also have broached the idea of a multiyear extension at a lower rate, though that was early in the spring and has not been followed up.”

– Athletics’ 3B Eric Chavez will undergo a second microdiscectomy on his back, this time on a different spot. The A’s confirmed that he’d miss the rest of the season. Chavez told The San Francisco Chronicle last month that another surgery would end his career, but that no longer appears to be the case. Chavez underwent his original microdiscectomy back on October 9.

– Rockies’ RHP Taylor Buchholz will undergo Tommy John surgery for the damaged ligament in his right elbow. Buchholz tried to rehab after initially being diagnosed with a sprained ligament on March 5, and the extra damage incurred will likely cost him half of 2010. Buchholz said, “I was hoping this could be avoided. That’s why we waited this long. Looking back, I guess you could say I could have had this done three months ago. But we were hopeful.’’

– Angels’ RHP Scot Shields (knee) is out for the remainder of the season.

– The Rays have placed RHP Jason Isringhausen (shoulder) on the 60-day DL.

– The Royals have placed OF Coco Crisp (rotator cuff) on the 15-day DL.

– The Brewers have transferred 2B Rickie Weeks to the 60-day DL.

– The Rangers have placed RHP Frank Francisco (shoulder tendinitis) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 4. Francisco could return as soon as Friday, but the Rangers won’t rush him back again.

– The Twins will likely send OF Denard Span (ear) to the 15-day DL.

NBA

The agent for Magic’ F Hedo Turkoglu told the Sentinel on Monday that Turk will opt out of his contract and become a free agent in two weeks. Turkoglu is scheduled to make $7.3M next season in the final year of a 6-year/$36M deal. F Marcin Gortat is also testing the free-agent waters.

NFL

– WR Plaxico Burress’ gun case was adjourned to September 23rd. Plax was late to the court date. With a possible trial not seeming likely until 2010, Burress’ support team is hoping he’s allowed to play football this year. It’s uncertain if the NFL will suspend Burress before the case is heard, so the chance of Burress playing this season is inching up, if a team is willing to take the gamble.

– The Broncos are not yet considering the possibility of dealing RB Brandon Marshall. Marshall held out of Denver’s recent minicamp and faces fines if the Broncos want to levy them. Marshall’s holdout could extend into training camp, which may cause Denver to reconsider, although we doubt it. Marshall is also coming off of hip surgery.

TNA

– It was reported in The Sun and Wrestling Observer last week that former TNA wrestler Nicole Raczynski (aka Roxxi/Roxxi Laveaux/Nikki Roxx) had recently sent her resume to WWE and the AAA promotion out of Mexico.

Raczynski denied the report in a statement on her Twitter account: “Morning! Just found out a bunch of places reported I sent my resume to Triple A and WWE. I so don’t remember doing or saying this. Lol.”
