– The Yankees defeated the Phillies 7-3 last night to win the World Series in 6 games. The Series win gives the Bronx Bombers their first at the new Yankee Stadium and their 27th overall and their first since 2000. OF Hideki Matsui, who was 8-for-13 (.615) with three home runs and eight RBI, was named the series MVP. Time for skipper Joe Girardi to get a new uniform number.

MLB

– The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the Phillies and LHP Cliff Lee are set to begin long-term contract extension talks this winter. Lee is under contract for $9M next season. He went 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA during the regular season with the Phills. Early reports indicate a similar deal to Yankees LHP C.C. Sabathia’s seven-year/$161M deal.

– According to the NY Post, the Yankees will not be bringing back OF Johnny Damon nor World Series MVP Hideki Matsui. The Mariners have expressed interest in Godzilla. The team is believed to be trying to get more athletic this offseason, with C Jorge Posada turning 39 and 3B Alex Rodriguez possibly needing more surgery this offseason.

– The Detroit Free Press is reporting that LHP Jarrod Washburn could re-sign with the Mariners next season. The 35-year-old went 1-3 in eight starts and with a 7.33 ERA last season after being dealt to the Tigers at the deadline, but went 8-6 with a 2.64 ERA in 20 starts for the M’s.

– According to MLB.com, RHP Livan Hernandez would like to return to the Nationals.

– Cubs LHP Ted Lilly could miss the start of 2010 after undergoing shoulder surgery on Tuesday, the Cubs announced. In a release, the Cubs said Dr. Lewis Yocum “found no major damage to Lilly’s shoulder and the procedure consisted of a washout and cleanup of the shoulder” and that the surgery took about one hour. Still, Lilly probably won’t be 100 percent for the start of spring training and could miss a portion of April. That’s not such a bad thing for the Cubs. Lilly might be healthier at the end of next season than he was this year if he gets off to a late start.

NBA

– Pistons president Joe Dumars has shot down rumours of the team shopping F Tayshaun Prince. One of either Prince, who makes $10.3M, and G Rip Hamilton, making $11.6M, are very likely to be dealt. Early rumours indicated that it would be a package deal with F Jason Maxiell. Stay tuned.

NHL

– Hurricanes F Eric Staal (UBI) may be sidelined for two-to-four weeks. The Hurricanes aren’t releasing details of the injury, but it’s become obvious that this injury is more serious than initially thought.

– Rangers F Dane Byers has been suspended one game for his role in a fight during the third period of Monday’s game against the Canucks.

TNA

– According to the Wrestling Observer, TNA has contacted John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL) about signing on with the company, but he’s said to be not interested.

–There have been reports over the past week or so that TNA Wrestling star Kevin Nash is currently suspended from the company. The suspension was reportedly a result of Nash “going into business for himself” at a recent iMPACT! taping and criticizing TNA for the way they handled a botched spot on Chris Sabin that could have left the Motor City Machine Gun member in very bad shape. Nash has responded with a statement on his Facebook page:

“Thought I would clear up some internet bullshit. The reason I did not receive a letter from T.N.A was because this matter was discussed between President Dixie Carter and myself. I promise you it cost me money not a paid vacation at my beach home. I understand Dixie’s reason for the action she has taken but stand by my reaction to what at the time appeared a serious neck injury to [Sabin].”

– According to ProWrestling.net, many within TNA feel Lacey Von Erich has zero locker room etiquette and is not respectful, on top of being “horrible in the ring.” The feeling is she won’t even last six months in the company. In another circumstance which has her co-workers scratching their heads over, she’s the only person backstage who stays in her wrestling gear all day long at television tapings. The third generation wrestler refers to it as her “costume.”

WWE

– The UK Sun recently conducted an interview with Kofi Kingston. The highlights:

On being one of the last people to find out the Orton/Kingston feud: “This whole development has been pretty recent, I still don’t know what’s in store, except that there’ll be some high-quality matches. You pick a fight with Randy Orton, you have to step up to the plate. I’m going to step up and try to hit a home run.”

On dropping the Jamaican gimmick: “I think this is about me making a transition, a progression to the next level.

His dream opponent: “There’s a few, but growing up, Shawn Michaels was a big influence on why I watched wrestling and why I got into wrestling … It would bring my career full circle, because he got me into wrestling, and now here I am pursuing my lifelong dream.”

– Multi-faceted personality Dennis Miller is pegged to host the December 14, 2009 episode of Raw.
